Hart is as old now as most goalies are when they enter the NHL. The bumps he’s shown in his development are common ones, we just don’t normally see goalies go through them because they’re in the AHL or Europe.

Most people who say Larkin is not a first line center don’t understand he’s never had a elite winger in his career but still puts up 70 + points while playing great two way game each year

Yeah he has done as well as he has with the team with the absolute worst record over the last 7 years. Every time Stevie Y makes a good move my second thought it always how its going to be beneficial to Larkins game. I think he can be a first line center on a contending team...if he was on one.

In Edmonton it’s definitely Darnell Nurse. People are calling for his head after most games and his contract hurts the team. His upside doesn’t seem to make up for his weak points which are only compounded by how much he plays. While I personally question how good Stuart skinner is quite often I found he was generally popular and treated as solid by fans and the media.

Even if you only look at his stats, Hagel is not overpaid, $6.5M for 60+ points is pretty damn fair, especially when you know that players are getting twice this while not even posting twice as many points, but once you also add in the context that Hagel is one of the hardest working players in the entire league it makes even more sense. Chicago were fools to trade him even if though they got good returns.

I used to watch Hill in Tucson, before and after he got ice time with the Coyotes. Crazy to see what he’s accomplished over a relatively short period of time, and the weird path it took to get him to a Stanley Cup. He is not a top goalie, but he is absolutely capable of turning it on from time to time and stealing some goals. He did exactly that in the playoffs, but don’t expect a stellar performance over a full season. He is equally capable of letting in some floaters and just being off. I’ve seen it all. Best of luck to him though!

As an Oilers lifer, I gotta' say I am surprised a bit that Nurse wasn't chosen. I like the guy well enough, but can't believe he'll ever be a 10-million dollar man. With his proven inconsistency, even at 5 million a year I'd have an issue. Skinner isn't nearly as controversial, and much more consistent, going game-by-game last year, compared to Darnell
@DantesTyphoon
@DantesTyphoon Жыл бұрын
I am surrounded by hardcore MN Wild fans and Matt Dumba was the most highly controversial player and most seem happy he's gone. It's not that people say he's bad but for a team with huge cap issues Dumba's salary to value ratio did not make people happy. It's an interesting topic when a good player is still looked at as detrimental due to either pay or a injury prone history. With him gone among MN fans I'd have to say Fleury is debated most with how Gustavsson performed

Larkin is hugely underrated by both Detroit fans and other fans. The reason we have the debate is mai ly comparisons to Yzerman and Fedorov. Obviously they were better. But that's no reason to take shots at Larkin who is one of the better all round players in the NHL especially considering his defensive game and ability to lift his teammates and affect the game in all areas of the ice. Great player, totally underappreciated by the majority imo. However, to have him as a 2C is absolutely the dream, that would be amazing.

I think for Sens fans, Sanderson isn't debated? He's celebrated by the vast majority, we seriously love him. I think the debate is between other fanbases viewing from the outside - in. Between Sens fans, I think the most debated player is actually Chabot. People shit on him to no end and even talk about getting rid of him which is just insane imo. Only reason hes talked about like that is because he was literally our only good D-man for so long, playing 30 minutes a night so the expectations became insane. Pretty sure 6/10 of the TOI records is held by Chabot lol

But I still have full faith in him as a starting goalie and will point to his performance in the 2022 playoffs when people say 2019 was just a flash in the pan. Yeah, gonna have to disagree with Skinny being the point of debate for Sabres fans. He was obviously incredible that first year but I don't really blame him for the next two years. One year he was on possibly the worst second line in hockey, and then he got moved down to a 4th line that had plenty of heart but zero offensive ability. If you watched any games during that stretch (totally understandable if you didn't; I mean, I barely did) you'd see the effort he was putting in each game. He just didn't have the help he needed. Last year and the year before last he finally got on a line that fit him and, lo and behold, he was back to form. The bigger debate by far has raged around Casey Mittlestadt. Mitts showed tons of potential early on but then a combination noted hockey terrorist Ralph Kreuger and injuries seemed to completely ruin him. This last season in particular was a roller coaster. In the first half of the year both Mitts and Oloffson were massive defensive liabilities. Then, in the latter part of the second half of the season, Mitts was called upon for bigger minutes as some of Buffalo's top forwards ended up being in and out of the lineup with injuries. Much to the surprise of everyone, myself included, Mitts slowly cleaned up his game and ended up being a 50 point player by the end of the year. He's earned the benefit of the doubt but, to me, he still has a lot to prove.

As a flames fan, I only really want one thing noted that I do not think enough people talk about (because obviously it is rightly overshadowed by everything else) I kept a running tally for most of last season. Hubby definitely suffered due to who he was playing with being unable to finish. I got as high as 25 points he really should have had from assists. It’s not much, but that would have put him at 80pts for 77 games played. Yes, it would likely have still been an underwhelming season. But he gave his teammates chances and it needs to be acknowledged.

I get the Skinner thing even though I am a believer in his goaltending myself (like really, he was considered a rookie last season so I think he did quite well considering). I think the most polarizing player in Edmonton is Nurse. There is a sizeable camp that loves him, a sizeable camp that is on the fence about him (including me), and a sizeable camp that can’t stand him. As it stands, he is overplayed by about 2 to 3 million per annum, but it would be a noticeable difference if he left. I would dare say that Edmonton’s best defenceman is Ekholm.

My take on Schiefele is varied. The guy has talent for sure, but when called out on his play he pulls away instead of owning up to it. When he is frustrated, it shows by his play. He needs to make his aggression into smarter moves on the ice. To be fair, most thought Wheeler was the locker room problem. So with a well loved Lowry wearing the C, his words in the room should be positive ones. So now I see Schiefele after a summer of waiting for teams to be interested, and the interest wasn’t really there. We probably won’t ever know who asked what, but no team took the plunge. So now he comes into camp and I gotta say he looks focused. Talks about how he has no problem signing here, it’s his 13th jets camp after all. So let’s see if this will be a better year. He certainly is starting of right by wearing Jets gear in his interviews and leaving the Nike gear in the closet. It’s a start 😅

How about we say Binnington is his own worst enemy. When his head is screwed on straight, he's borderline elite. But he's too easily distracted. And I think he relies on reflexes over positioning. So any distraction means he's going to have a bad night. Wouldn't be surprised if EHM rated his consistency as low.

leafs fans forget marner was a 1st all team nhl RW two years in a row, right? first unit PK? potential 30/70 dude every year while in his (current) prime? you want him traded for who and what exactly that will equate to this? yeah, i dont like his cap hit (based on when he signed it), but money could be spent in way worse ways. at least it is "spent" on what he brings and not (name some player making way more than he is worth).

Yes, within the team's fan base, Jones is the most controversial, mainly because of his contract, along with the various trade circumstances that brought him there. Most of the Bedard debate comes from outside of the the Hawks' fan base, and is dominated by those who are mad that their team didn't get to draft him.

I was legit surprised to see Caufield's name on this list as well, but when Shannon mentioned "gets injured a lot" as one of the criticisms people used I had to roll my eyes lol. Caufield's had 1 injury that took him out for half a season. We don't know if that'll be a recurring thing or just bad luck from last season, plus people will praise a guy like Matthews for being a 60 goal scorer when he's had 1 good year of above 40 goals yet won't admit Caufield would be a 40-50 goal scorer if he was healthy last year and probably will be for most of his career lol.

To be honest, you could put any of Toronto's core four on the board and you could make a valid argument. To sink that kind of money into four players and have the astonishing lack of results they've produced thus far definitely causes one to wonder if perhaps all four are overrated.
@G0lden-lu6by
@G0lden-lu6by Жыл бұрын
It's not that they are overrated or that much overpaid either, it's just the fact that all are better offensively than defensively. It's the core 4 and a 1/2 now, Nylander is the half there, gotta pay Cpt.Morgan too and he too is better in the O-zone. Yes talent and points are important but that's just too much cap invested in those points, you need those stalwart Dmen and shutdown centers too and elite ones at that ain't cheap either.

For Tampa I would have gone with Sergachev. I think he's been a little overrated (especially last season). He's definitely on the right track but he still makes a few too many, poor defensive plays (granted he's still young). It is good that Hedman has stepped back a little (I think by choice) to give Sergachev more ice time. As others have said, Hagel deserves to be paid. He produces points, controls the puck, great forechecker, really strong defensively, and plays a lot of minutes killing penalties with a high skill level.

Vegas fan...and I'm not in the least surprised that Hill isn't a top ten. He's never been a starter. He's sometimes not been good enough to be a backup. He wasn't the starting goaltender at the start of their Stanley Cup run. Did he do a good job in the playoffs? He did. That doesn't make him top ten. A year ago he was so unimportant to the Sharks they sent him to Vegas for a fourth round pick. Moving from that to top 10 NHL in one year is difficult, if not impossible. He is getting a nice salary bump for the next two years, but I have a major question... Is it the goaltenders, or is it the defense? Remember, Vegas had four straight wins with four different starting goaltenders (and Hill wasn't part of that!). Of the five in net for them, there was a rookie, a career backup, a guy who wasn't good enough to be a backup at times, an AHLer, and a once-great goaltender who is in the twilight of his career.

I think that Oilers slot belongs to Nurse. Skinner did have a good season, point blank. His numbers were good, and there's no contrast with Jack Campbell that can artificially inflate those. He had a pretty hard time in the playoffs. He's only 23, and if it was for a different team, one that doesn't have as much pressure to win a cup, I think that playoff record could easily be forgiven as growing pains. I'm excited about where his ceiling might be. (Actually, I'm really excited about Edmonton's goaltending potential in general. Campbell and Skinner have both had recent, painful, visible rough patches, but both of them have also had much better times. It's clear both of them can do better. True, everything could go wrong with both of them, and I'm bracing myself, but it's also possible that we see some spectacular results. The potential is huge.)

Vejmelka - I think he's a good goalie. We'll probably see his stats go up when the Coyotes get better. Skinner - I thought this guy was done, but the last 2 years have been really good for him. Can he do it again? Svechnikov - Could be better. I think he'll get there, he's still so young. Vanecek - No opinion. Trouba - An asshole who makes some bad mistakes once in a while. Could concentrate a bit more. Still a good player. Kuznetsov - I think he's an above average player. Would like to have him in my team. Zegras - Jury's still out. Still so young that he can absolutely become one of the top forwards in the league. Scheifele - Hard working player who I think isn't the best teammate. Probably not overrated, but wouldn't want him in my team. Duclair - An enigma. I liked him in Florida and he scored some key goals in the last playoffs. A bit underrated now? Sanderson - No opinion. Skinner - Good goalie, still very young. Horvat - No opinion. Hart - Good goalie. Still very young. I think he'll be at least a challenger for the Vezina a couple of times in his career. Grubauer - Stanley cup. 912% career sv%. I think he bounces back. Huberdeau - I wasn't expecting last year to be that bad. Probably won't go back to 100+ points, but I think he'll be ppg player again. Binnington - One really good year. Probably not overrated anymore, but I think he sucks. Caufield - Could be a bit better and I think he'll get there. So young still. Dubois - Motivational issues. I don't think he'll ever be a true star in the league, but probably a good 2nd line center until he loses his interest again. Marchand - Would love him in my team. Annoying as hell, but a good teammate. Spurgeon - Has had an okay career. Haven't really seen any debates considering him. Laine - Once he stopped celebrating his goals during his time in Winnipeg, he's never been the same. I think he has some motivational issues and until those are gone, I don't expect him to become more than a 30 goal scorer. He could and should be a rocket favorite, but it just doesn't seem that important to him. Hill - Another Murray & Binnington? Probably a bit overrated now, but we'll see how the next seasons go. Marner - Actually had good playoffs last year and is one of the best passers in the league. Maybe a bit underrated now? I'd still keep Nylander and trade Marner. O'Reilly - Cup, Conn smythe, Selke. Has had a good career. I think he bounces back. Georgiev - I thought this guy was done after leaving NYR, but had a very good season. Can he do it again? I think he can. Hagel - No opinion. Karlsson - Underrated and overrated at the same time. I still think it's stupid to hand over the Norris to the best points scorer, but that season was absolutely ridiculous for him. Bedard - The pressure must be absolutely bonkers for him. We'll see how it goes with the bad Blackhawks team, but I think he'll be alright. Heiskanen - I'm a big fan. I think last year he was a bit overrated, but now rated right. Larkin - No opinion. Ekblad - Has had some injury troubles, but I still think he's very overrated. I'm a Panthers fan and I really hope he stays healthy and plays like a 1st overall pick again.

For the Sabres, I think Olausson is the choice. He’s good at one thing and below average at everything else. But that one thing is scoring goals with his incredible shot. So what kind of value do you place on the guy? I have no idea what he could fetch in a trade or what his next contract should be.

Regarding Brad Marchand, he only seems to act up when the Bruins are losing badly and pretty much has no chance of winning the game. If the game was close (even if the Bruins were losing), it's like he realized that the Bruins had a much better chance of winning with him on the ice or the bench than in the penalty box.

I didn't think Caulfield would feature either. There might be some debate as to where his ceiling is, but generally he's seen as a very good goal scorer who was on his way to at least 40 goals on a weak team. He would have been the first since their last Stanley Cup winning team.
