Well done, Andreas. The SX128X devices do work rather well, and although they dont have the extreme long distance of UHF LoRa, 2.4Ghz is pretty much a worldwide allocation with a very wide band and no duty cycle limits so there is the possibility of moving quite large amounts of data around. The PCBs shown in the video, with the LoRa devices on, are good for experimenting, they are breadboard friendly and you can get them from the website. You will get better performance using the modules that can take an SMA antenna.

Note: to make an arduino sleep longer, just put the sleep call in a loop. works great in my years of doing so. I.e. you want it to sleep for approximately 5 minutes, =300sec so loop 50 times on the sleep function at 8s each. arduino clock isn't accurate at all, but for sensors reading ever X minutes, its close enough.

Thanks for the video. One note about those SX1280 modules. It seems like by default they fitted with a capacitor connecting the PCB trace antenna and to use u.FL connector the capacitor has to be moved to the proper position. In your video, it looks like you are using just the PCB antenna. So maybe that was cause it did not work in the 5 km range test. Hope I could save some head-scratching to someone. :)

You are right. Usually, it is a 0 ohms resistor instead of a bridge because it is easier for their pick-and-place machines. I checked the modules I used for the tests, and both have a connection to the connector. But it was not easy to change the connection because of the reduced space...

I'm experimenting with sx1280 for a work project and I am very happy with the results. I am getting around 10% packet error rate at 180meters without line of sight in a very urban environment. I'm using the integrated pcb antenna, SF12 , BW 1600 and 4/5 CR. 10% might seem pretty bad, but it's not important for my application.

It's always bad when you hurt the very finger you use to push buttons with. It was an interesting video. I'm not sure I can see any applications for using the 2.4GHZ band with LoRa, but it's still interesting. I see the possibility for too much interference between devices. You can probably solder with either hand as I can. I learned to use either hand back in the 80's building stuff all night on the kitchen table. I'm sure you've been there too. I think one of the motivations for developing 2.4 GHz modules was the absence of duty-cycle regulations in that band. Maybe it can be useful for some projects which need to communicate continuously.

Thanks for the video. Sorry about the finger and the crash. Three years ago I crashed into a stationary post on a trail at full speed. I went over the handlebars and wrecked my 1978 Schwinn Super Le Tour (old friend of mine). I'm your age - recovery was tough and incomplete. The pavement seems to get harder every year. When it happened, I knew, I cannot change it anymore and was quite calm. Maybe different than 30 years ago... I have a brand-new bike, but it seems not hurt too much. Sub-GHz bands have better penetration than higher frequencies counterparts but there is a reason industry has moved on higher frequencies despite this big drawback. Even not mentioning the restrictions and duty cycle limitations on 433 MHz and 868 MHz, the 2.4 GHz modules make possible to have significantly higher transmission data rate and so make them usable in use cases where the low throughput and spectrum scarcity of 433 MHz and 868 MHz simply are not enough. (e.g. Think about trying to transmit a video using the data rate of sub-GHz LoRa and then check the data rate of SX1280.)

2.4 GHz LORA has a HUGE advantage over all the other frequencies: no limitations on duty cycle. You allowed to send 10byte measurements from a sensor: LORA 868: 172s LORA 2400: 0.5s (physical limit) Also if you just a diy maker at home, it’s not so easy/inconvinient to calculate the duty cycle for your project to keep it legal. With 2.4Ghz no need for that.

Hi andreas, have you tried the E78-868LN22S? this is the new LoRaWan module from Ebyte that includes a ASR6501 chip with a pre installed firmware to use LoraWan with AT commands. As i noted pin used are similar to the cubecell ones, so i think it's possible to use it stand-alone. I'm waiting for mine to arrive, but i think they could be usefull for you and others too, as they are very cheap (4/5 €). There should be a 433MHz version too with a dev board at around 8€

Andreas, it is not true that Pro Mini is limited to 8s sleep. After 8s it can sleep again :) And without any RTC. I use it in the thermometer together with Nokia LCD and thermistor. With refresh every 3 minutes it has been operating for 1.5 years on single 18650 cell and I expect 2 years. AVR chips are perfect for LiIon because of more convenient voltage range and in deep sleep mode they draw almost nothing.

Thanks for testing these and for another very good video! I'm interested in using them for our enviro/agricultural research projects. Unlike the sub GHz bandwidths, having no limits on transmissions rates is another good advantage. Do you think that these achieve better range/ penetration over other 2.4GHz solutions in forest or crop applications? We are only interested in 500m forest ranges and up to 1km in crop systems where antennas could be installed over the crops.

I recently purchased two Arduino MKR WAN 1300 and when tinkering with it I did discover that it's possible to configure also for non-ISM bands, even down to VHF frequencies and with narrow bandwidths as well. So I did set it up on 144.800 MHz (HAM radio APRS frequency, so no major interference for my short test) and 12.5kHz bandwidth and then I did check with the Yaesu 857D I have (not very scientific, but for a crude check at least) and did see that it did actually work there. I haven't tested any range or output power so I can't tell if it's actually useful for any distance beyond a few decimeters. But from the perspective of shared knowledge I think that this might be interesting. At least one idea I have is to see if this device could be used to build a beacon for VHF and UHF on the ham radio bands.

@@AndreasSpiess I see, in that case the filters have to be inside the CMWX1ZZABZ-078 as on the schematic for the MKR 1300 there are just two capacitors and a zero ohm resistor, which to me looks a bit limited when it comes to filtering capabilities. I think it would be interesting to do actual measurements of the device to better see what the behavior is, but unfortunately I don't have those resources.

Seems you connected the IPEX connector on E28 module but without disconnecting the PCB antenna, rather than switching the 0R resistor to connect the IPEX disconnecting the PCB. Don't you think could have a positive impact on performances of external antenna cut out the PCB antenna connection?

I'm surprised to not see this type of chip in ham radio use. Years ago, any device that could be pressed into transmitting service was used, misused, or abused into ham radio use. Very interested to see your new satellite setup - I think I'd be using a larger transmitting dish - perhaps another TV dish.

80 cm should be enough from what I read. 60 cm works, too. But you need a lot of power. And the 80cm dishes are common and cheap here. These days we have SDR devices, so we probably will not need such chips.

Can you get the RSSI per packet/message using the Ebyte 28 SPI modules? I have bought some UART type modules but they can only do RSSI on the full channel in RSSI mode, when that mode is activated I can't receive any messages, therefore RSSI is pretty useless to me right now. You seem to be getting the RSSI per packet, right? The datasheet for SPI is way more complicated so I love to check with you if you get the RSSI per packet before I order some SPI based modules. Other than that the performance is impressive, next to a canal (line of sight) I reached about 2km range with the onboard PCB antenna's using 12dBm and 1k AirSpeed. 🙏

Is the receiver really based on software defined radio? I would think this would be a lot less efficient than implementing the decoding in hardware. Also this doesn't seem to be mentioned in the datasheet (comparing the sx1280 vs sx1276 receiver descriptions in the datasheets, they seem to be reasonably similar). Where did you get this information, it sounds interesting!

I do not exactly know how they implemented it. But it uses I/Q signals and an ADC. So I call it an SDR and not a superhet. And they mention they are flexible in decoding schemes.

With line of sight i got 2,4 km with normal WIfi 100mW 2MB/s (or even better) so no surprise - what will be more interesting to me is a comparison in urban jungle areas to normal wifi - are there any advantages in range compared to normal 2.4 Wifi? You were lucky with your Wi-Fi if you only used normal antennas. In my tests I used directional antennas for the 2.5 km. Inside the house it penetrates better than Wi-Fi. I would say it is similar than on the outside: Better than Wi-Fi and worse than sub GHz LoRa. And I forgot to mention: I am now on DMR ;-)

Do not forget the Rehabilionsprogramm with softballs to get back the muscles of your finger cause finger surgeries need a lot care afterwards otherwise you won_t be able to target with your straight indexfinger cause it will rest more in a curved line than straight. Had 2 surgeries and fought a battle over years to get back a straight finger that I call now straight but far away of my other finger. Good luck ...

@@AndreasSpiess There are some interesting (but crude) Radar (ultrasonic SR04) Arduino based designs that actually work! But of course, they are slow at 8 bit. Imagine a small raspberry Pi with audio alerts of on-coming traffic. I'm glad you survived with so few injuries. It sounds like you are very lucky this time because of environmental circumstances! As you are probably aware, Volvo Heavy Trucks in Europe have developed an active Radar / sensor platform that is integrated into the braking system. I can paste links of you wish. It truly is impressive, taking into account vehicle weight, velocity (vehicle and all surrounding targets), distance parameters, braking requirements, etc. Apparently, the system is very small, requires very little power and sweeps 360° , 720 times per second. If autonomous cars and trucks are part of our future, I'm guessing it will be available for bicycles in the near future! By the way, I hear anti-lock disc brakes are also being developed for bikes!
