The recipe sounds great. 326 horsepower and rear wheel drive should give a huge amount of performance and fun to the new Cupra Born VZ. I will admit the Cupra Born is one of my favourite EVs but I think the range topping VZ has a couple of issues...

I drive a Born Business standard car, with the 58Kwh battery, front and back camera, Traffel Assist etc. I love the looks. So do my neighbours. I love the driving caractristics, I love the interior. The chairs are great. Even every day I am on the road I see people looking at my car and they all like it. That is quite funny. If I am to be allowed to reach my pension, and have the money, I would probely buy the VZ. Have to wait for a few years though...... :)

I've had my 58kWh V2 since June 22 so it be will 3 years old this summer. Just over 30,000 miles so far. I sold my ID.3 after 3 months to swap into the Born. Love the car and the way it drives. Yes, the haptic buttons are imprecise but you get used to them. Would i like more range and performance? Obviously, but probably not worth spending what it would cost to change! VZ would be great for the lower price of the current offers.

What a nice car! I really enjoy both the blue and this Forest colour. The copper-coloured badging really sets the whole thing off very nicely. The interior styling looks lovely, but I would struggle with the somewhat overwrought and silly touch controls. The price is rather...aspirational. THis car deserved all its plaudits when is was introduced a few years ago. Sadly for THIS Cupra at THIS time, the Renault 5 does too many tasks better than this car and does it for far, far less. A laudable effort!

I've had a "standard" Cupra Born V3 for 2 years - agree with your comments 😁. The pano roof is pretty much essential (designers stop with the dark headlining !!!). It's taken VW ages to go back to proper buttons on their newer vehicles, maybe Cupra will get them in a few years time 😂. My biggest gripe is with software upgrades (basically none until you take it in for it's first service after two years) and the general complete lack of support/interest from VW (Cupra) for the car ☹️. Really like the car, though 😂.

Is perfect for localish travel and excellent family transport. Looks good, drives great. Not worried about depreciation as it's a lease car. Maybe I would consider VZ as next lease car in a year or so. On autotrader newish examples already start at 33.4 k with 10 miles on. 😮

What a great review! You're pointed out the 2 main things wrong with this car. Price and steering wheel buttons. The Leon has proper buttons, not haptic and is much better for it. Shame they didn't put these on the Born. It's going to be an expensive beast for a new buyer, but also anyone wanting to buy it up to 5 years old. I have a First Edition VZ, which has heat pump and sunroof included, I got £4500 contribution, £1000 dealer cash back, Ohme home charger installed for free and 0% finance, so added up to a large saving combined. If you can you should try to get an EX30 in, the normal RWD version as while it's not as sporty or dynamic as the born and much smaller battery, it offers most of the features for less, and when you push it because it's a lot of power to the back with a short wheelbase it behaves like a Clio V6, and it can be a right hoot to drive down a B-road.

“Lots of power, rear wheel drive, short wheelbase hatchback, that’s quite tall” sounds like a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus for the 21st century? Having said that the extra weight blunts the advantage of the 326bhp, the 0 - 60mph time not being that much faster than the Talbot and it’s also a good job it has the electronic overlords to save you at that price. I like the Cupra-ification styling wise but it’s still an ID3 underneath, which isn’t that pretty and as a four door it actually looks quite long wheelbase don’t you think?

I suppose the only way these are good value is you get a lot of lbs for your £.

The whole range of Borns atlre 10k too expensive. But everyone gets new cars on lease, so the top line rarely matters. I've got a V3 I love it, it's nippy enoght for me, and the 60kw will do 5.8 to 60 all day. It's quated as 6.6s. so I have no doubt the VZ will be in the late 4s areas. I have the Dinamica seats, and you can lean the seat backwards so the front of the seat bottom angles upwards. It's tricks your mind into thinking your sitting much lower in the car. Make the seats feel more bucket like too. The Dinamica seats are down of the best seats on a "cheap" everyday car I've had. I think the only seats more comfortable that I've owned are the seats in the 2004 Laguna estate in dynamic (coincidentally) trim. They was there fantastic half leather really supportive and soft seats. The Cupra Dinamica seats are excellent. I just with they had memory function. I'd trade the massage feature for memory. The seates in the VZ I'm not sure I'd want over the Dinamica seats. The new one looks more sporty, but I think the Dinamica are a far better all round seat. I've got 4 lower disks that I knackered when im the marines, and seats are quite important to me. The heating on the seats ain't great, I have to have it on level 3 to feel it. The opperite to the wheel where even level 1 is far too hot. 1.too hot, 2 burns, 3 3rd degree burns.

The haptic buttons need to go and so does the high seating position. Also not a fan of the gear changer. Other than that, really nice. I would say this is one of my favourite car designs, if it wasn't for the blindspot creating split pillars on the driver's side. I have a 2021 honda jazz with a similar pilar design and it just has you bobbing your entire upper body back and forth focusing entirely at one thing (overcoming the blind spot), which leaves you vulnerable to other things that you should be paying attention to, while also not being that effective compared to not having the blind spot there. Its a huge and very dangerous blind spot. You need pedestrians on the footpaths and roads to find out. If its raining and on the roads shown in this video, you won't have any pedestrians so you won't know. But many people have reported it and I find it dangerous that reviewers claim the honda jazz has great visibility. I can't guarantee that this car has the exact same issue to the same level but its very likely. It's not about the pillar's thickness, its about the entire split pillar design and its position. You have to drive one to find out. But if you don't know about that blind spot and aren't doing everything you can to compromise your driving safety and experience, in an effort to save pedestrians from being hit due to the blind spot, then you're at high risk of being a victim yourself.

Having owner a Cupra Born the 58kwh does 220 miles just in summer. The 77kwh 270 miles BUT motorway range not good especially in winter. I sold mine when value was going off a cliff. If I had leased for 2 years I would have lost more. Last spring Cupra slashed £7k off pre registered cars proving they didn't give a damn about their customers. I was offered £18k for a 2 year old car with 10,000 miles by my Cupra dealership who had several pre registered cars from a Northampton dealership. I sold it for £21k to a car buying service and would now be lucky if I got £15,000 for it which is £6k less than I sold it for 7 months ago. Also my car had 3 to 5% degradation and only been on 3 to 11 kw AC chargers. I also noticed 3 door hinges rusting after 4 months of owning the car. If you get a blow out the only option is a recovery truck. Also car would have infotainment issues after charging. Never buy an EV or it will hurt. Now back in a used petrol car and costing less to run.

“Never buy an EV”. EV depreciation is a temporary issue caused by continued rapid fall in new prices and improvement in performance typical of any new technology. Once EVs mature, they’ll have lower depreciation than ice cars due to lower fuelling and running costs, less maintenance and greater reliability. This is economically inevitable.

With regards to the haptic heater and volume controls under the screen: I have a Leon with the same, I never need to use them; like, ever. Volume on the steering wheel, heater control, I just use the voice control. But to be honest, the climate control is pretty precise, so I don’t find I have to alter it 98% of the time.

Great car and love the extra power. But the price and those stupid haptic buttons (when we VAG realise) make it a non starter. Shame! Great car let down by a couple of things. Pete, is the CUPRA that the windows came down in the rain that you mentioned at the live podcast event recently?

Gosh, from the pricing to lack of certain things (no pump standard, no 3rd climate zone at the rear, no physical buttons on the wheel), this car is a no go for me mid video already. Thanks!

I’ve had a Born V1 for ~18 months, I wouldn’t even consider an id3. I’ve been happy with the car overall, haptic buttons not too much of an issue but some of the controls are a bit baffling and the infotainment is certainly a step back from BMW / Mini that I’ve been used to in recent years. I’ve not driven the VZ but would be interested to try one to see the difference. In saying that it doesn’t look different enough from a std model on the outside and couldn’t see me being enticed in to buying one anyway. The car (like a lot of EV’s) is well overpriced and that would certainly put me off getting another Born.

Having looked at the Cupra range - they are far more interesting than equivalent VW or competitors - the VZ going into luxury tax bracket is the problem - fully loaded should just be within the tax point. The haptic buttons are indeed a pain and need moving. As EV's go the Born is one of the best but I still think an R5 brings a bigger smile!

The £40k luxury car tax farce is going to be the death of cars like this…. I can’t see people paying over the odds for an EV when the tax man will then screw them for over £600 per year VED! With the ridiculous prices now being asked for cars generally, the idea that a £40k car is a ‘luxury’ vehicle is completely out of touch 😠
