I said .327 Federal has about the same powder charge as 9mm "sort of". What I mean by that, is when looking at just average powder ammo like this .327 Federal Hydrashok, this more or less is how it works, but with true Magnum .327 Federal Magnum, they will use a true magnum powder at a higher charge. The .327 is sort of like the .38 Special and .357 Mag mixed, as the lower end rounds often use run of the mill pistol powder, while high power ones use magnum powder. If that makes sense.

Great video comparison, 327 ammo is really hard to find right now. 357 ammo is so high that you about have to mortgage the house to buy it. I swear, If the Biden administration has their way, Not only will Pellet & BB guns be banned, but they'll keep going until they end up banning rubber band guns too. Have you ever compared a lower powdered 327 to a 38 +P rd? I had heard that a 38+P is just a little under a 357 but I have a hard time believing that. If I heard you agree with that I'd believe you because you would know from testing. Great channel by the way. I subbed. Peace..

S&W used to offer a REALLY nice little J-Frame in this caliber. I believe the model designator was 632. One version even came ported from the factory. Very, very nice...and also very pricey; well north of $1K. Tough to get folks to pony up that kind of dough for a 6-shot J-Frame. I wanted one, but the price was more than I could manage at the time. When I went back later when I could afford it, the gun had sold and shortly afterwards, S&W discontinued the model. Too bad for me! The Ruger LCR is great (I own three), but not in the same class. S&W, are you listening?

The .327 Fed Mag is just the sort of weirdness (relative to more conventional calibers like .38 Special) that appeals to me. It also helps address the capacity issues that people have with wheelguns, as one can put in now physically smaller cartridges into the same cylinder size without restoring to .22LR/WMR. Pity that I have never seen a .327 for sale at any of my local gun shops or else I would totally pick one up

I wish I had a 327 Federal. Much underrated round. Personally I would keep 100 grain in it, but then again I am an old time hunter/shooter, and sectional density is more important to me than to most shooters today. Interesting vid on the low recoil round. Thank you.

Some numbers to add to your data base. I've not done penetration tests, nor 85 grain boolits except in .32 H&R, but...Federal American Eagle .327FM 100gr JSP in a Ruger Single Seven, 4 5/8" barrel, average 1600fps for seven rounds; 1541fps in a 7 1/2" barrel (b/c gap issue there, I think); and 2255fps in a 20" Marlin barrel. Very accurate. I save those rounds for go-to-town ammo. Handloading, it sips powder and nibbles lead. For EDC around the ranch I like a hardcast NOE 133gr Keith SWC at about 1100fps in the 4 5/8" (the 3 1/2" birdshead is for discreet carry. I've not chrono'd it figuring, why bother? It'll do...). Knocks the snot out of just about anything one might encounter out here in the high desert. Searching since I was 10 years old 60+ years ago, the S7...carries like a .22; choots like a .38; hits like a .357. Finally, The Ideal Trail Gun (after using a .22 for decades up until about six years ago). Seriously considering giving the kids and grandkids their inheritance early, and just keep the ..327s and a 20ga pump with bird and rifled barrels. Hehehe, sure would simplify life around here. I hope more people discover the wonderful world of the .32. Thanks for helping introduce more of the masses.

Love watching the tests, great idea and follow through. A side by side out of the LCR with a few .327 Fed Mags to compare would be great really pitting the ammo more than the guns and ammo. I carry .357 now in a S&W 640 pro as well as a 2" Chiappa Rhino, but considering the .327 LCR, thanks!

As always, an excellent presentation. I appreciate the tests you do. I can only imagine all the work that goes into making vids like this. I am soon to be 63 years old and have shot a little bit of everything but I always learn something new here. And I mean this in a light hearted way, but I am a bit envious that you have a near perfect place to shoot. Around here in my small ne ohio town, about the only way a person can go out target shooting on a whim, is if they own their own spot in the country. either that or join the local conservation club. even then its not easy to shoot because someone else is always there. and much to my chagrin they closed the firing range for some kinda maintenance. when I ask a land owner for permission to shoot on their place there is a miriad of reasons why they cant let me. insurance reasons, or people working on the land and its too dangerous, all of which I can respect. Or it's privacy issues and to be honest if I owned my own land I wouldnt want everyone on it either. Probably the biggest reason is that it is mostly flat land here in ohio therefore a lack of a proper backstop, although one could be built. That's why you seem to have the perfect little spot, down in a gulley with a natural backstop. Anywho, keep the vids comin brother

So, we see the finished expansion of the bullet, when it's done its thing and everything is peeled back. At some point during expansion, all that material is sticking straight out perpendicular to the bullet before it rolls/peels/mushrooms all the way(= larger than final expansion briefly). Good work, thanks!

In a lot of firearms, the fair portion of the recoil, sometimes most of it, comes from the muzzle pressure as the bullet exits the barrel. While recoil does start the instant the bullet starts moving, there is that component of the gas pressure when it becomes unbalanced as the bullet exits. For short barreled pistols, a great way to reduce recoil is to use a smaller charge of a faster burning powder. That way you get near rated chamber pressure to get things started. But the pressure in the barrel drops off quickly as the bullet proceeds down the bore. A side effect of this will be less blast when the bullet exits. This gives you good efficiency at the cost of not achieving the maximum potential power of the cartridge.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's one of those things. Like even if you lose velocity, you still retain all of the recoil. It all magnifies when in a short barrel. 125 or 158 gr .357 feels the same in the 686 but in the snub it goes from bad with 125 gr to brutal with 158 gr.
@Fudmottin

@@GunSam I feel like I've gained more recoil sensitivity over the past years. My inclination for a J-Frame load would be to run a projectile out of a 38 Short Colt case using 9mm Lugar load data. This still requires a 357 Magnum rated revolver. But I can run a smaller charge at the same efficiency as 9mm and reduce the recoil and blast I would get from a 38 Spl+P load. I've not completed research in that area because I can run 9mm loads out of a P365. And it holds more of them! Then there is the 22LR rabbit hole. A J-Frame can hold 8 of those vs the 5 in 38 caliber. At what point does the round count advantage counteract the ballistic disadvantage? I don't know the answer to that. What I do know is that a revolver is more reliable than a pocket auto in 22LR (or even 380 ACP) in terms of function. Hit a dead round, just pull the trigger again. No malfunction clearance drills to worry about. In your case, I'm thinking that your switch to carrying a 327 Federal Magnum with six is a good one in that the extra round is 20% more fire power. You also have not given up much ballistic performance. To me that seems like a win. For me, I just haven't made the transition. The Ruger LCR is the only revolver I know of that runs that caliber and it isn't cheap. Also there is the issue of ammunition. I don't have any in that caliber. I also don't really relish the idea of dealing with the blast of a 327 FM out of a 2" barrel. That is a high pressure round on top of everything. Blast is also an issue for me.
@troy9477

Nice test. The 327 is certainly intriguing, and seems useful. I was expecting 1200 fps, so that was good. The 6 shot easy to carry compact that you always have on you beats heck out of the 15 shot wonder gun you always leave at home because it is too heavy. And it may save your life or someone else's. I would probably carry the 100 gr gold dots, but that is me. Looks like the 9 would be a good choice for my Kahr P9. Many good loads out there, and i am partial to gold dots.

The application of the LCR is wet work.... up close and personal to save your life. Easily concealed. I personally like the HR 32 Magnum better because of the tiny amount of felt recoil allowing follow up shots to be deadly. The key to any hollow point is the damage it does as the pedal folds back.... sometime called the permanent wound cavity. Those pedals cut like a meat grinder and if arteries , the heart, or lungs get in it's path the perp will die quickly from blood loss internally...

I agree, and carry a three-inch six-shot H&R Magnum. Hornady now sells a Critical Defense round in .32 H&R Mag! (I stocked up on these just before the Covid ammo panic.) I also have some Buffalo Bore HOT rounds that might as well be called +P, and they cause Zero visible damage to this modern revolver even with much bigger blast. Don't try them in old guns from the Seventies!..........................elsullo

That tiny super lightweight lcr ruger in .327 mag would be a great backup ccw, but I don't like barrels that short for CC. It seems that you give up too much velocity and gain a lot of extra muzzle blast, especially in a high performance round like the .327. I personally could warm up to a ruger sp-101 in .327 with a 3 inch barrel. For me, a 3 inch barrel is the minimum with 4 inch being about ideal for CC. IMO The 4” has the best balance of velocity, weight, handling and concealment.
@GunSam

But that's the thing. The .327 Federal was designed off of a 3" revolver and optimized to do well in short barrels. The 45,000 PSI gives efficient burn with the right load. This load and the hot Gold Dot are neither really the right load for a snub but they aren't bad.

There is always lost velocity and pressure due to gases escaping through the cylinder barrel gap of the revolvers Which is something you should mention when Comparing revolvers and semi auto/single action/double action blow back pistols at least until you get 2 pistols same caliber same barrel length same cartridge except ones a revolver and ones a semi auto pistol and do a little myth busting does cylinder barrel gap effect performance.

As Paul Harrell would say "not bad at all". Honestly the 9mm surprised me,I didn't expect it to penetrate that much and still have expansion. I wonder if out of a longer barrel it might have more expansion and maybe a little less penetration? I may have missed it but have you tested the "Micro" 9mm HST that's also reduced recoil? I've seen some tests with it and results seem somewhat mixed. It certainly seems inferior to standard HST. Keep up the good work!!👍👍

I haven't tested that micro version yet. I thought it was interesting how HST has a 147 gr and a micro 150 gr. Just makes me wonder what design difference makes one 3 gr heavier. It is something I should test.

9mm always costs less than any centerfire ammo. Just how it is. To me it's not a problem as unlike 9mm, you really don't have to extensively vet your carry ammo. Sure you should buy 2 boxes and shoot one box to make sure the cases eject, the powder isn't so dirty it gunks anything up, and it shoots good for you. But it's not like the whole semi auto accepted procedure where you need to fire 200 rounds of your defensive hollow point ammo in your pistol to make sure it functions. So to me, the whole story taken into consideration, the cost of ammo issue is a non issue.

The 327 Mag is in this energy setting way less powerfull than the 9mm. It is comparable however with an 38 SPL +P+, meaning it is right between an 380 ACP (tipically around 150 ft-lbs) and an 38 SPL (tipically around 190 ft-lbs) or it's +P variants. 266 ft-lbs versus 329 ft-lbs is an considerable difference. These should be compared with full power ammo and not low recoil. I would consider the 327 Mag as the perfect universal defense round for EDC. The 357 Mag in an 2 incher is just to snappy and has to much blast and recoil. Remember in an defensive shooting you do not wear ear protection. The only 9mm you can shoot without ear protection without ringing your ears is out of an Beretta 92 or Taurus PT92. An 357 Mag has surprisingly few recoil out of an Ruger GP100 6" revolver. But it has enough blast as to deafen you.

I have a question concerning noise or decibel level. Is there a possibility of disabling or disorienting the shooter from the decibel level of the the 327 or the 357 fired indoors? The reason I ask is I was 5 yards behind my daughter shooting a LCR 327 outdoors and experienced the 327 Gold Dot concussion/blast without hearing protection (Accidental...forgot my ears) behind here for one shot. It was actually painful and disorienting. i will never make that mistake again. In an emergency with no time for hearing protection, in an enclosed room at home or a small business, just wondering if the blast would actually disable me? The 327 is a whole different animal when it comes to noise.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 жыл бұрын
From my understanding, while hearing damage is still possible, in a life or death situation, your ears that normally pick up a painful 150 db will only register 40 db, meaning you are not disoriented. I never experienced it personally, but it was something I was told at a firearm training class.

@GunSam 3 жыл бұрын
lol. His video was wrong. I don't have a 9mm revolver as I never saw one for sale in my stores I shop at. He used the weakest .38 and .357 ammo and good 9mm ammo. If you had the best 9mm+P ammo in a 9mm snub you would get as much as maybe 375 ft lbs. I have personally gotten rounds up to 600 ft lbs from my 2" Taurus .357 snub, but generally .357 in a snub is 100 ft lbs more than 9mm in a snub.
