Are you all forgetting ?, he had a least two longest term girlfriends ,BOTH left him in the end because they could no longer put up with his drinking, bad temper, sulking, and ‘ o, poor me moaning. He had a bad temper right from childhood and has never lost it. Not helped of course by his drug taking and drinking. Yes, I think H did believe that becoming a married man and father would elevate his status within the RF, because on marrying he would, in line with royal tradition, be given a Dukedom - which, contrary to what most people seem to believe, as an hereditary title which can be passed down the generations to his offspring, is a much higher status bauble than the mere style of 'prince'. He also probably expected to be gifted a residential estate along the lines of Gatcombe Park or Highgrove, and if he and M had stayed the course for a few years and proved themselves, doubtless that would also have happened. He would thus be elevated from his junior status as a bachelor in Nott Cott to a fully fledged working royal on a par with the rest of the family, and similar (but not equal) to William and Catherine. From H's demeanour in the engagement interview, I think that was the limit of his ambition at that time, but from the same source it is obvious that M never had any intention of settling for so little.
