Wonderful!!! The bird bath as first attempt is great! Bud vases are beautiful, the one with copper and magma glaze is fabulous, the contrast of color and texture is gorgeous... More kiln openings please!

Well done. Interesting to note shrinking sizes.

Fabulous! You can wedge a couple of pottery shards under the top to stabilize and level the top before you glue it and no one will know. The birds will love it!

Verry nice. Love the blue. The littel vase with the copper on the bottom gives me ideas for a cup i making

I will put some pictures of it up before and after on Facebook @loishookpottery so you can see how the copper melted. I really didn’t need as much as I used. I will also put up the pic that was my inspiration.

Nice results. I love watching your kiln openings. But it is intriguing to watch you making and glazing too. I especially love to see your throwing skills. My only experience is with sculpting Clay, never had the hand strength for throwing. I really appreciate the skill it takes to make beautiful individual pots with character though. The bird bath is great, and it is good that you demonstrate the challenges you face in making and firing, helps people understand just how technical a process it is, while at the same time as being such a wonderfully creative thing too. Just curious, how difficult would it be to make additional bowls to use with the same pedestal? So you could swap out the top if you wanted to? According to weather/season/mood? And the birds of course too! Now, what do the birds think about it? They are your real target audience with this one!

Good question Ans one I thought myself. This bowl is very un steady and would have to be stuck if I used it though something like a blue tack that would hold may even an idea. As long as I know the shrinkage I could make other tops. As the bow is warped a bit I thought about the firing and wi seeing if it would slump back into place (if is was I level Because of the cookies I used at the bottom.). I am though thinking of another water feature using Palladium glaze. Very exciting.

I wonder if smokey merlot on top instead of Oatmeal would have shown more contrast. Either way I really love the glaze on the birdbath it looks like waves on the ocean. I just sent a mug to my community kiln with textured turquoise on top and bottom, ancient copper in the center and oatmeal at the top where the ancient copper and textured turquoise meet. I hope mine looks half as good as your vase. You got the ancient copper looking so perfect.

Thanks. Smokey Merlot might have worked. I did want more and I should have done the oatmeal in blotches. Because the bowl is so shallow it didn’t have Anyware to run to.

It is beautiful!! I've been waiting for this. So glad I got in so early. You know what would be neat? Paint some little fish on last coat of glaze with an underglaze. No need to glaze over. The fish should be absorbed by the under lying glaze. Just thinking....

That would be a nice idea.

Amazing pots. You inspire me to be more adventurous with my glazing. could you please tell me what ramp rate you fire your stoneware pots to ?

Lois, U can avoid the war page by NOT putting anything plate/platter like on the lowest shelf in the kiln. You're doing great! Best regards, Harriett
@LoisHook3 жыл бұрын
So please help me with this issue that I have had on other platters I’ve done. I presume the clay is pulling back and when I’ve done the opening of the bowl I have had a wobble that I have forced back in shape and the kiln make the clay remember. They’re is a bit of a distortion but slight on the foot and I used the little Cooke’s it hold it up. I’m tempted to refire and add some more glaze for a better reaction. And to see if it will settle. Some one mentioned putting on Sylvia sand before so the clay can move. You mentioned the shelf location. My kiln is cooler ok the bottom. ??

Oh, I never thought about doing a kiln wash over the cookies, I will totally have to do that. Life saver! And I absolutely love what the copper wire did. I hope you don’t mind if I give it a try also.

Epoxy might help with those cracks, but don’t take my words for it. I only use it when something breaks. Love the bird bath.

It’s the Skutt cone 6 preset in the KMT I will see if I can get it.
@jillboyes78563 жыл бұрын
Good job on the bird bath, I can see birds dancing in it now! Is that Amaco Ancient Copper? If so, do you do a hold? I used it and didn't get the crystal spots and it didn't look as coppery as yours. That palladium is BEAUTIFUL!
@LoisHook3 жыл бұрын
So I’m still having issues in my head that the cones say it’s a good 6.5. I usually do a 10 minute hold and it pushes nearer to 7. So this time two shelves. Medium fire. (Preset by Skutt) cone 6 no hold. The lower shelf with the bowl was cooler just over a 6. Shelf up in the Middle of the kiln where the pots were nearly a 7. Interesting it was the bottom of the hat with dried bits mixed in. It was at least 4 coated on the bud vase with the magma glaze. But only three on the turquoise bud vase. It is a great result. So in my brain now I’ve seen the palladium is so wonderful I’m thinking of a water feature in the garden where the water runs down and I do the pots palladium. My brain is trying to think of a way to make it big enough to be special. And how to fix together.

What glaze is that orange with the pot that had the copper wire?
@LoisHook3 жыл бұрын
Hi It’s a colour by Terracolor. I have the red and orange. This is the first time I have put it on the outside of a pot as it runs. When inside I find it’s more red. But this came out a proper orange. Here is the link for it in the UK www.scarva.com/Mobile/en/Terracolor-Brush-on-Stoneware-Glazes/m-c-89.aspx
