Goalkeeper is undoubtedly the hardest position on the football pitch and just like everyone else in the world, goalkeepers are subject to make mistakes. As you can see, even the professionals make mistakes from time to time. Do not judge a goalkeeper based off of a mistake as you most likely do not know how to play the position, or if you did and were/are bad, are just trying to make yourself feel better:

In defense of the keepers, they work in the most dangerous place, just inches from the goal. Other players make mishandling errors but the ball rolls harmlessly out of bounds or stays in play far away.

Goalkeepers aren't given nearly as much credit as they should be. Like you said, if the midfield, or the defense screws up, there is still another line of defense behind them. If a goalkeeper screws up, it's in the goal.
