Loved this vlog. Takes me back to the terrific Shire Cruisers holiday we had from Sowerby 'Sorrbee' Bridge. We got as far as the top pound, meaning we did 72 locks in 4 days! The boat company were pleased we got so far and were able to bring some of the summit pound water down with us. Looks like you didn't have that worry!

The bracings that are on the locks is called a Smiths Truss. They are used on an apex when it needs to be strengthened. We’ve been watching your vlogs since the beginning and thoroughly enjoy them. We have been fortunate to have been able to do two narrowboat trips (4 weeks each time) when we have returned to the UK to visit family and friends. The Rochdale is on our list of canals to do , travel and corona virus permitting as we are unable to travel internationally from Australia at the moment. Thank you for the vlogs 😎

The hire boat companies suggest that this canal is more suited for experienced crews. It looks lovely . The slow motion footage in the locks looks great . If I can get my crew of 8 together this will be my next trip . Let's hope restrictions will allow sometime in 2021.

If there's enough thread free on the screws in your control box you could add a thin nut to each of them. That would allow you to use the thin nuts to lock the screws in position.
@MinimalList4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that idea; I eventually got the thing fully apart and figured out what the issue was... at that point the screws went back in and seated well, with a bit of loctite its now good to go for a few more years! M

That last lock looks really interesting
@grahamwestgate11924 жыл бұрын
I believe the reason for the unusual wooden structures at the tail of some of the locks is to act as a sort of "upper cill", to prevent the bottom gates from being forced beyond the closed position, at the top, and breaking the gate! It is found in one or two places, often where the gates don't have much of an angle between them, and especially if the gates are high and a little on the light side! (structurally, they're all heavy when you're the one working them!!!!😆😅)
@MinimalList4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we’ve heard various versions of the same reasoning, and it definitely makes sense. They also seem to have been near locks heavily affected by subsidence, so maybe there’s just more play in the gates than when originally installed. M

The canal may not have a tunnel, but the railway (to your left at Summit) does. It was built in 1840-41 under George Stephenson. In December 1984 a train of oil tankers caught fire and blocked the Summit Tunnel. People were given a chance to walk through before the line was reopened in August 1985.

Memories: as we rose in the summit lock - OMG look at that valley, it has been worth the struggle. At the swing bridge, meeting a woman who had lived in the cottages there for several years, who watched us with great interest and said it was the first time she had seen a narrowboat going through! The views and the scenery - amazing. Perfect reflections in the water. The Lancashire people using the towpaths so friendly and curious. And the pub beside the moorings in Todmorden - the best food of the whole trip. Thank you for reminding us.

What another lovely peaceful vlog with beautiful scenery, when we were on our narrow boat in 2009-11 we reached Selby basin to go over the Rochdale and was told by Inland Waterways we would have to turn about and go back the way we came or through Standage tunnel as they were closing the canal through lack of water on the summit. Not a problem now it seems. Maybe one day we will travel back from Orkney and hire a boat to do the journey. x
@MinimalList4 жыл бұрын
Hope you do, well with the trip. The Rochdale does indeed have serious issues with water supply, and often has to shut in the summer when there’s just not enough rain to fill the reservoir. We arrived in the middle of a particularly damp spell, so had the opposite problem. Apparently it’s kind of feast or famine! M

It is eerie to visit the site where they were tented ... there is a visitors center there. It even has the original sluice gate used to feed the canal .... which does run dry on occasion ;0) You also missed the site of England's largest waterwheel (no longer in use)

@MinimalList2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, missed this question… the answer is not really, and often involves a bit of a fight to see whomever is most polite. If on a big run of locks I like to send the more experienced boat out first, as they can get into the next lock and pulled to the side more efficiently than a newcomer, but otherwise it usually ends up being a kind of alternation or based on whose crew had been able to walk ahead. There has been 1, ONE, video inserted into your Rochdale Canal journey to say Merry Christmas and I think "oh, it has warmed up!" based on your attire. It actually took me a couple of minutes to remember that you don't publish your videos immediately after recording. DOH! Frankly, even if you did catch up, there is real security in not announcing where you are at a particular moment. During the couple of minutes it took me to remember that the one video insert did not reset your entire time line, I noticed that your (Michael) hat fit remarkably well! Cool beans! It's a good thing, actually, because I found an XXL hat and was puzzling over the best way to reach you to discover if it might fit. My husband wears an XL and I wasn't confident that one size up was enough. It was or is a tan wool bowler and I was also unsure if it was something that you would even consider wearing. I understand, though, how difficult it IS to find you a hat because it has been how long? Six months? A year? Since we talked about your hat dilemma and I just found ONE of questionable usefulness to you. I agree about the beauty of the Rochdale and used your video for yet another argument to husband that we should sell everything and spend the remainder of his life cruising the canals in a narrowboat. He did show an interest briefly when I told him that we could load the boat onto a truck and do a bit of exploring of the French canals as well. After about 45 seconds into my sales pitch, though, he was ready for silence to return to his movie. It may turn out to be a solo venture after his departure. Too bad because I think that he would enjoy it and anything would be better than just laying around in a hospital bed. Easy for me to say as I am not stuck in a hospital bed. If you don't put out another video this week, I hope the coming New Year brings joy and a fun sort of excitement in spurts surrounded by peace, love and contentment for both of you together as well as for those who you love. Happy New Year🎉!

Notes: Rochdale canal, either side of the summit......tick. All the other bits of the South Pennine Ring .......tick. Can it be done in a fortnight?........just. Tick. If our covid blocked October trip at Easter doesn't come off - and it probably won't - we'll have to look at the summer holidays (some of the crew work in schools) so we could do two weeks on the bounce and do the SPR! Sorted. It is gorgeous - anywhere in the Pennines is always spectacular - and that wall! We've seen two or three places where the topography is fairly vertiginous - in Bath on the K&A is one such, with frequent trains going by, parallel to the canal, immediately below your boat - but that wall in Todmorden is just amazing. Even more so because it forms one bank of the canal and thus the footing are submerged. Nice one guys - you keep finding the jewels.

Beautiful! Did you get an explanation re the triangles on the gates? Certainly look to be bracing. Your engine control sounds to me as having a part gone missing in the past the manages the clutch tension and perhaps the previous owner used the screws to control tension on the clutch. For sure you will know when it will fall apart!!

A week or so after this video I actually got the controller apart... turns out it was all down to excess grease, some locktite that failed, and a ball bearing that had skipped its race. Once I got it apart it was pretty obvious, though that spring did try and shoot bits all over the boat! As for the the braces, apparently they’re to prevent the gates from warping further than they already have. M

Definitely the best outtakes! How many attempts did it actually take to get the finishing lines out in the end? I guess it was some kind of record!

It's surprising that the Summit locks are labelled East & West, seeing as the canal runs North - South,
@MinimalList4 жыл бұрын
Well the canal runs from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge so while there are some stretches that run north south the over all direction is east west

Hope you managed to check out ‘Todmorden railway curve ?’ It was reinstated in 2015 after being removed in 1972. This relayed curve of 500 mtrs which is now a single track cost in the region of £10 million, considering that in 2016 Railfuture put the cost of reopening of a single track railway at £4.5million per mile.

The IWA needs to add two more locations, and give a silver propeller for 20 and a GOLDEN propeller for all forty.
