Swami Sarvapriyananda teaches the Katha Upanishad, which is one of the most popular Upanishads. The scripture concerns the story of a young man who goes to the house of death to find out what happens after death. The reply describes the nature of reality and the meaning of life.
The Katha Upanishad has two Adhyayas (Chapters), each with three Vallis (Sections). The Vallis contain the following number of Mantras (Verses):
Adhyaya 1 - Valli 1 - 29 mantras (1.1.1 - 1.1.29)
Adhyaya 1 - Valli 2 - 25 mantras (1.2.1 - 1.2.25)
Adhyaya 1 - Valli 3 - 17 mantras (1.3.1 - 1.3.17)
Adhyaya 2 - Valli 1 - 15 mantras (2.1.1 - 2.1.15)
Adhyaya 2 - Valli 2 - 15 mantras (2.2.1 - 2.2.15)
Adhyaya 2 - Valli 3 - 18 mantras (2.3.1 - 2.3.18)

ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

When does the shift happens when Karma goes from meaning Yajna to please devtas like Indra to meaning doing yajna to get next good life to Karma referring to all actions?

I have a question for swami Sarvpriyananda ji that "We all say that atma(consciousness) is inactive. But when drasta (atma or consciousness) is aware of all the activities of the mind . Then, how can I say that atma is inactive? Because it is always watching the mind " .
@1oscarbravo
@1oscarbravo Жыл бұрын
"Watching" is a figure of speech. Language evolved to describe the apparent world around us, not the ineffable Brahman. When we say, "The mountain stands forever," are we talking about an activity? If we say, "The sun shines," is the sun activelybdoing anything, or is it just its nature to shine? In the same way, if we say Brahman is "witnessing", we are not describing an activity, we are trying to indicate its nature.

I am not an expert but based on this lecture, I can say that atma is neither active nor inactive, rather it's the base on which the activities and inactivity appear. Just like a screen for a movie or gold for ornament. It is existence which appears as existing things.

Key takeaways Prana is vital life forces (we think as breath). There are 5 sub pranas which performs different physiological functions. The experience of life is not due to Prana but because presence of consciousness. Subtle body incl. Prana reflects consciousness back into body mind system & illuminates it. Without Prana & subtle body, consciousness cannot give experience. Brahman is external (not limited in space, time) and secret. Unenlightened ones at the point of death, only physical body dies, subtle body incl Prana is set free, it continues, propelled by past karma, some past karma will fructify; acquires a new body (human or animal) - a new birth and new experiences. There are worst birth than animal birth - due bad karma they become motionless like trees, creepers. This past karma depends on religious merit - vedic rituals & knowledge (vedic mediation). When body goes to sleep, senses quitens, consciousness experience a world created by dreaming mind based on materials from waking world. When mind goes to sleep, you the (consciousness) are still awake. That alone is pure - consciousness without any content. Brahman is immortal, beyond life, death, production, destruction, causality & karma. It is vast. In that vastness is set all the world and none can exist without that vast. Thanks Swamiji for explaining these topics.

- so why introduce conciousness when we have prana and body etc.. upanishad says.. even prana is illuminated by conciousness only.. - the unelightened ones at the time of death continue to be born in yonis according to their karma cycle.. while the partial started enlightened one will be resumed from where he left off.. enlightenment is a garuntee at some point acc to krishna.. while the enlightened one has no death - even though you listen this your intellect is hard to be convinced.. so listen and dwell on this truth as often as possible
