Latest Nosler reloading manual #9 show maximum velocity for 300 Win Mag 220 grain bullet at 2771 fps. 300 H&H gets 2718 fps with the same bullet. That’s less than 2% difference. Maximum for the 180 grain in the 300 Win Mag show 3160 fps vs 3023 in the H&H. That’s only 4.5% difference. 300 H&H will do anything the 300 Win Mag will do in the smoothest feed cartridge ever invented. Also 300 H&H known for handling bullets lighter than 150 grain better than the Winchester. For folks who like to shoot the lighter recoiling 7mm’s (me included) look at the data for both the Nosler 175 grain ABLR and Partition bullets in the 7x57 Mauser. I use the same ballistic calculator Ron that does. BC for the Long Range Accubond is 0.648 vs 0.519 for the Partition so the Partition won’t shoot quite as flat but on the average with a muzzle velocity of 2574 fps and sighted dead on at 250 yards maximum trajectory height is 4” at 150 yards before falling to -4.6” at 300 yards while still clocking 2138 fps with 1778 ft lbs remaining kinetic energy. Even at 350 yards they’re still running over 2000 fps with 1666 ft lbs remaining while only being down 11”. Again these are the mean averages for the Partition and Long Range Accubond bullets at a muzzle velocity of 2574 fps. Your mileage may vary. Pretty good for a cartridge that’s 125 years old. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

338 straight is a .223 blown out to a straight wall case. I've see it also written as 338-223. gets rid of some of he ambiguity. I've seen a few cartridges based on the .223; 6mm-223, 17 stinger, 20 Viper, 6.8 Badger. But, the straight wall is 338 Thumper

I’m pretty partial to the 200 grain Hornady Superformance loads, myself. On deer, they hit like a lightning bolt. Something about that combo of velocity, bullet frontal area, shape, and construction just hits like Thor’s hammer! I’m not taking high shoulder or spine shots either, but chest shots through the lungs. The lights just go out instantly.

Big game cartidges: I am a native western Coloradan, and have been hunting for 40 years. I prefer a 300 Win Mag. My brother prefers a 30-30. Yes, it works fine because he is a good hunter. I have bought 257 Roberts for my kids to use. It works fine under 200 yds for elk. (Yes, you do have to spend time stalking. I taught my kids how to hunt, as a life skill.) 257 Weatherby works fine too. My dad used a 270 Win in his later years. The more important consideration is to practice with the rifle you intend to hunt with, and learn to shoot it accurately.

Like the .300 H&H Mag most. Has a magic (nostalgia) the other magnum rounds lack and has the best feed/extraction reliability in adverse conditions if dust, dirt or mud has worked its way into the rifle/magazine. With modern powders it performs as well as the .300 WM did when introduced in 1963. The first and best .300 magnum round IMO as it does all you need without being ludicrously overbore like some rounds are (e.g, .30-378 WM) which have excessive recoil and a very short barrel life.

I have long thought that leaving the bore alone is better than constant cleaning and then having to fire a fouling shot when the bore bore has been cleaned. That seans to be talking out of both sides of your mouth. I also remember Jack O'Conners love and constant promoting the 270. I have several of his books and would like to have the others. Ron, regarding the tip of the week: Do you consider a couple passes with a bore snake to be cleaning a barrel? Sometimes there may be atmospheric moisture in the bore after an early morning or late evening hunt, and a couple of passes with a bore snake will dry it. Do you think that will affect precision like a full barrel clean? Thanks. Mike from humid Florida.
@NelsonZAPTM
@NelsonZAPTM 11 ай бұрын
Hey Mike, here in NZ, bore snakes are good for a quick clean in the field. When you get home clean out the carbon with a brush and Hoppes (or similar) then light oil for storage (bore snake or patch before next shot) this will prevent the carbon from holding moisture and corrodding the bore. De copper with solvent or paste when accuracy is affected.

Ohio originally listed individual cartridges legal to hunt with in a rifle. It was mostly handgun cartridges and obsolete blackwpowder cartridges. I suspect it was not just to reduce range but also limit the types of actions available in those cartridges. We were limited to lever guns and single shots. No semi autos for trigger happy hunters.

@@danblumel That isn’t the question though. The question is, the best all around, do it all cartridge, for Western hunting. The 6.8 Western is the perfect cartridge. You can purchase ammo from 145-175 grain high BC bullets. Short range or long range, it can do it all. Plus, it does it with milder recoil over its counter parts.

@@jmgates09 Unless you replace your barrel on your 270WSM, you’re limited with 150 grain bullets. The 6.8 Western can fire those same projectiles, but it can fire projectiles up to 180 grain due to the faster twist barrels. The range and the wind defection is better with the 6.8 Western. I love both cartridges. I’m a big fan of the .277 projectile. But there’s nothing the 270 can do that the 6.8 can’t do better.

All around western hunting? That’s easy! The .338 Win Mag is the best for antelope through elk. It also works well in Alaska and most African game. I’m using a .375 Ruger as my all around rifle as I moved up to the last frontier with a .416 Taylor as my stopping rifle. I’ve noticed that the typical American hunter is a pansy when it comes to recoil. I’m an American but I’ve shot with a variety of nationalities and in my experience it’s the American shooters that don’t handle recoil well. Love your channel.

I know a guy (not gonna say if it was me lol) that accidentally fired a 308 through a 300wsm. The shooter didn’t have safety glasses on bc the hand loads were known to be safe in those rifles. The shooter almost lost an eye. A lesson was learned about not having multiple rifles and boxes of ammo on the bench while shooting. It’s easy to grab the wrong one by mistake when you’re single feeding.

Speaking of caliber for out west elk hunting, particularly I live in Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania's game commission has a law that you are not allowed to. Hunt are elk with under a 27 caliber rifle or bullet cartridge. Which I find funny that they stipulate that for the elk, but they don't stipulate caliber specific for are black bears which Pennsylvania gets quite a few black bears that are well over 500 lb. So, for the rest of big game which is elk turkey and bear and whitetail deer. You can use any centerfire rifle or pistol that is not semi-automatic or automatic. Just wondering why they would caliper specific for an elk and not are black bear?
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 11 ай бұрын
That is a good question, Les, and hinges more on human psychology than ballistics. First, elk have a reputation for being extra tough and hard to extinguish. Second, despite hundreds of years of experience, we humans still can't agree on theories of hydrostatic shock vs. bullet diameter vs. bullet energy vs bullet momentum. More velocity or more bullet weight? Or both? So, in a vain attempt to hedge their bets and reduce any risk of wounding loss, those "in power" decide for us that a minimum must be... 27-caliber. Or 24-caliber in the case of Wyoming and several other jurisdictions. Or a minimum of 1,500 foot pounds bullet energy in others. On and on it goes, never mind that a 6.8 SPC shoots a .277" bullet that carries about half the energy of a 270 Winchester-launched bullet. Never mind that most of these states allow muzzleloaders that might spit round balls carrying even less energy than a 6.8 SPC or even a 223 Rem. And never mind that states like Montana and Idaho maintain healthy elk populations while allowing 243s and even 22 centerfires to be used. Why no such limits for bear in PA is likely because you guys have been taking your bears for more than 100 years with anything and everything and it's not been an issue. Elk are new and exciting and they want to do it right, even if they're not quite sure what "right" is. In their defense, the 270 Win. isn't a bad minimum standard for anchoring elk, but the 257 Wby Mag. is probably just as effective if not more so and the 243 Winchester with the right bullets and placement has an excellent tract record... and the 6.5mm shooters are really being short changed.

I would like to add something about Safety Glasses. Not all Safety Glasses are created the same. I sold Safety Supplies for many decades and for shooting I always wear "Ballistic Rated" Safety Glasses. Non rated glasses may provide some degree of protection but can't stop fast moving particles, etc. In fact, some less expensive glasses can shatter if subjected to an impact. Ballistic Testing is more stringent and Safety Glasses that have that rating are your best insurance against a projectile or fragment penetrating the lens or shattering the Lens. Let's face it, you only get one set of Eyes. Protect them at all costs. Shoot Safe, Happy New Year and God Bless.

I am writing to ask a question most of my rifling is done within a hundred yards down range where I found on milk jugs 5-gallon water drugs and other items that hydrostatic shock seems to be more aggressive with faster smaller bullets then with larger slower moving projectiles. My question is if that's the case then when shooting a soft fleshy creature would that also not translate to tissue damage and ultimately blood loss? I understand that yin and yang and everything in the world is about balance. I am a fan of smaller moving flatter shooting projectiles and I'm drinking the Kool-Aid on these newer long-range fast twist items I still am not a fan of heavy recoil like I was when I first started shooting sports because I found that I could more accurately shoot distance with a projectile coming from a cartridge and gun with less recoil. I am considering a 30-06 with a slightly faster to a barrel ackly improved. I love the look of safari type rifles with the wood stock in the iron sights and I think it's 57 acme or 25 out 6 would be an ideal set up as well but I know 257 isn't known for its flat shooting

It is a difficult argument against the 06 for being the most capable, most centered cartridge. The fact that it is well over a century old and still holding on as "the" standard in which all others are judged, is a true testament to its design. Not sure if they got lucky, or if real necessity spawned the near flawless round, but they got it right.

I've own almost everything from a pellet rifle to a 375 h&h. Shot more bullets than most. At 65 I no longer have any guns since I have lived the last 4 years in the Philippines. When I lived in the USA I had no less than 10 guns at a time and shot them all the time. I was in the US infantry 11b10 infantry and shot many bullets then and reloaded most of my life. My 5 picks for long guns are pellet rifle, 22lr, 20 or 20 gauge shotgun. O/U or pump, s&w ar 15 in 5.56mm and a 30-06. Hard to beat a 30-06 and I found out it's the rifle I liked the most.had numerous lever guns in 30-30, 35 rem and 45-70. I prefer bolt action to lever action. Numerous 270 wins, 243 win. 7mm rem mag I hated kicked more than a 300 win mag, 338 wm and 375h&h. The 7mm rem mag was plastic stock lite weight and I hated it. Kicked like a mule. For hand guns Ruger mk IV in 22 lr. Ruger 45lc, had a Ruger Blackhawk in 44 mag, nice to shoot when I loaded 44 spcl, not fun when I shot 44 mag, hard to shoot it fast because of recoil with hot mag loads. SIG in 9mm and a sig in 10mm. Colt python in 357 mag with 6" barrel. Springfield 1911 in 45 acp.. s&w bodyguard in 380 acp, nice pocket pistol. Have no need for Glocks. Have owned mn22 and 17 and there are more reliable pistols out there. Leupold VARI X III scopes for rifles. Red dot sight for AR 15.. guess just add a 45-70 marlin guide gun for the heck of it. Nice performer with 350 fn at 1900 fps. Still like the bolt rifles better but the 45-70 would make a nice truck gun. Now if a billionaire wants to throw 10 million my way I would love to go back to America to live. My social security check does not cut it. So that's why I'm in Philippines. Roof over my head and food to eat. Miss shooting guns. At 65 don't miss hunting no more. Miss guns and archery. I would love to have a browning citrori o/u in 20 gauge and go quail hunting again. Quail is delicious. Miss shooting skeet, no longer a great skeet shooter like I use to be, lucky to hit a few clays but still fun especially with a browning citrori 12 gauge. When you dream, dream big 🙂

Ron thank you, you've taught me so much. Question for you. My dad is a reloaded and knows a lot. He has always told me that firing .223 Rem in my 5.56 Nato gun will leave micro fractures in the chamber. But everyone I talk to about it says no. Was wondering if you could clear this up for me?
@chrisgunsandguitars1403
@chrisgunsandguitars1403 11 ай бұрын
The NATO round is higher pressure so I think your dad has it backwards. You can shoot .223 Remington (factory ammo) all day long in a gun chambered for 5.56 NATO.
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 11 ай бұрын
I don't see how this could/would happen. Cartridge dimensions and headspace are identical. 5.56 military loads are often, perhaps usually loaded a bit hotter, but most rifles are built with enough structural integrity to withstand nearly double the max chamber pressures of their particular load. 5.56 MAP is around 62,366 psi while 223 Rem. is 55,000 psi. If anything, the 5.56 ammo in a 223 chamber would cause stress issues, but I don't think there's enough pressure to cause even this. We need to understand that many of these same rifles/barrels can be and are chambered for 65,000 psi rounds like the 22-250 Rem. If I'm not mistaken, your typical Rem 700 short action rifle or Savage or Winchester or whichever chambered 223 Rem. has same bolt lock up, same barrel contour as one chambered 22-250. The 22-250 chamber would result in less steel surrounding that fatter cartridge, yet both are safe. So, I haven't the absolute answer, but micro-fracturing in a chamber? Never heard of it being an issue.

Hey Ron what do you do with a rifle that doesn’t shoot great about a six inch group at a 100 yards and you clean it and it doesn’t improve and I don’t have any history of it I got it from a pawn shop I changed the scope and and now bedded the action I’m thinking of re-barreling it to a280AI being it’s a 30-06 Remington 721
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 11 ай бұрын
Scott, I examine closely to figure out why it's that bad, fix what I think might cure the problem, and then get rid of it. A rifle that old (Model 721 was discontinued around 1961) could easily have a burned out throat. A new barrel would fix that. But there could be a bent action, misaligned locking lugs, damaged muzzle crown, etc. Lots to look at, but I'd get a bore scope down that barrel and chamber before moving forward. If it's a burned out barrel, swapping to a 280 AI barrel would be great.

For bear id personally stay away from the 350 legend. Most factory bullet offerings are made for deer. They simply won’t have the proper bullet construction or sectional density. Velocity will also suffer some from a revolver. Of the options given I’d choose the 460 s&w. It has ample power and gives you the option to shoot 45 Colt, 454 cas or 460. It’s more versatile.

How did shooting the 7mm-08 out of the 25-06 go? I did the exact same thing only a 7mm-08 out of a 270win I was a little confused why my face just got sandblasted 😂

I was shooting Dakota M10 falling block single shot, so no damage to the rifle and no blowback. That big locking bar truly locks things in. Fortunately, bullet was a soft SST so it swaged down.

I've recently begun doing so. Love everything about them except the $ and silly govt. red tape to get them and the look. They make most rifles shoot more accurately plus soften the recoil, but I mostly love them for reducing muzzle blast so I don't lose even more of my hearing. Silencer Central makes getting one easy because they do most of the govt. paperwork for you!

I view cartridge selection differently. I do not relate energy much with killing power. How much energy does an arrow produce? I feel with non cns shots, tissue damage, and shock kill? So it seems bullet performance kills. My concern is, will my bullet perform correctly on the game at the ranges shot? So if one wanted to shoot a bear or elk out to 500 yards, would 270 Win bullet retain enough velocity to perform correctly? What about at a more reasonable 400 yards? On the last day of an expensive hunt? If your bullet fails to perform, would you rely on it? How about the other way? Bullets that explode up close? Like an SST? As an example, it is suggested that CX copper bullets require some 2000 fps to open. So, at what ranges with your chosen cartridge, will your bullet fail to perform? Obviously, there are so many variables, but that brings me to another thought. Besides the bullet performance, I believe often bigger calibers kill quicker. All things otherwise being equal with bullet performance, wouldn't the wider bullet cause more damage? This might support why, in my experience, bigger calibers, to a point, kill quicker? I want so bad to hunt with a 270 or 7, but every elk I've shot with a 7 mag required multiple shots. I once saw a small moose shot 7 times with a 7 mag! It was sick to see! Every elk I've shot with a 338 mag was 1 and done! I personally can't stand the idea of animals suffering, having to be shot multiple times. I conclude that there is a magic caliber starting point, which makes a noticeable difference, and that's 30 caliber. Just my opinion. I watched this vid because I'm in the process of my ultimate do lots hunting rifle build. Only my specs make cartridge selection frustrating. I want a light rifle. 6lbs. A short rifle with no brake. 20-inch barrel. I want the ability to take elk and moose out to at least 400 yards, or in black timber at close ranges. Light for mountains, yet also fast pointing in swamps for hogs! Crazy, huh? So what cartridge do I pick? I've thought about everything from the 270 to 300 RUM... 338 Win Mag, and was originally favoring the 7PRC at first. But because I came to my senses, in that 30cal is minimum in my opinion, I'm now leaning towards the 300 Win. If my gun likes Hornady SF 165 CX, that might be my 1 load for everything out to 400. My calculations show it would still open at that range, out of my short barrel. I would rather pull the trigger on a 270, but I just don't see the bullet performance I expect.

Hey Ron. A friend of mine and I are planning to take ours boys out for a prairie dog hunt. We live in Eastern Iowa and were thinking of going to South Dakota the end of this May, after school gets out. If you google prairie dog hunts the prices are a little step for us, $850 per person per day. We were thinking about asking around for places to hunt. Do you have any advise on finding a good place to hunt prairie dogs and making this a successful hunting experience? Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.

You might research public lands for dog towns in SD, WY, and MT. Ranchers used to beg us to shoot p. dogs, but then poisoning campaigns kicked in and wiped out many towns. Indian reservations in SD and MT have some of the bigger towns these days, so you might check with them. Another example of supply and demand, I guess. More folks wanting to shoot, fewer places to shoot, so $ earns the best locations.

I would love to go do a hunt. What or where would be a more "affordable" option that could get me "into" something different than whitetail in the Midwest. I've heard hog hunting is fairly cheap, or maybe some pronghorn or bear?

Texas hog, or if you want to see some different country a California hon hunt shouldn’t be slept on. Cali hogs are fun to hunt but I’d definitely recommend going with a guide. I really want to go on an Appalachian bear hunt and this is coming from someone out west with awesome bear hunts in Washington state. Pronghorn is one for the books but a pretty boring hunt.m, essentially road hunting for the most part

I'm guessing it's because the 7x57mm Mauser was the first and well known 28-caliber and because the 7mm Rem Mag (1962) was the most famous 28 and there was only one other 28-caliber with a 28 in its title, the 280 Rem. of 1957, and that one was not very successful so... roll with the winner. Psychologically most of us think of 7 as a lucky number, too.

Ha ha! As often as the demand is there! I'm sorry, Adam, but this is one of many topics that we hunters can't seem to get enough of. We discuss it over a coffee or beer, on our drives to the hunt, after dinner during the hunt... and around our "internet campfires" like this. And the answers keep changing based on new hunts, new bullets, new experiences good and bad, new ideas and information and, last but not least, new cartridges. I suggest you engage in some dry firing training or reload some cartridges instead of watching another of these! We won't hold it against you. P.S. Oddly enough, I still enjoy these discussions because someone somehow manages to come up with an angle or valid point that I hadn't considered before. One of these days I'll probably hear about the 458 Win Mag that bounced off a coyote, suggesting the minimum round for deer would be a 470 Nitro Express.
