Hey everyone, Aaron here! Thanks for tuning in to what I believe is my longest video yet!
I was tasked with recording all the dances at the event, and I was determined to make it happen. The day started off smoothly, but as the heat intensified around 2 pm, I found myself battling heat exhaustion. I sat in direct sunlight all day to ensure I didn't miss any shots.
Despite the amazing dances and energy, there were a few downsides I feel compelled to address in my event review. Firstly, the admission prices were for one day only. I paid $25 to enter on the first day, assuming it covered both days, only to find out I had to pay again the next day. Pro tip: mentioning your Native heritage at the ticket booth can save you $15, but unfortunately, it's not assumed at the gate.
Then there's the water situation. It seems Dennis Bowen wasn't aware that there were only two 5-gallon jugs for everyone to refill their water, and they ran dry quickly. Despite announcements, when I tried to refill, the water was gone, leading me to purchase expensive bottled water.
Parking was another challenge. The main lot fills up fast, so arriving early is key. I parked in an overflow lot and didn't bother seeking closer parking.
Lastly, the sun was relentless. While I don't expect The Heard Museum to provide shade, without my sun hoodie and straw hat, I would've been roasted alive. Despite my precautions, my chin and hands were exposed, and I can only imagine the sunburns others endured.
However, despite the challenges, the weekend was an incredible experience. Watching people of all ages dance with hoops, feeling the energy of the crowd, and cheering on the dancers was unforgettable. Huge congratulations to all the dancers who shared their hoop dance skills!
Thats all from me! Be sure to checkout my instagram for a few of the photos ive taken during this weekend. Follow me on Tiktok where I try and livestream with my phone mounted to my camera (if my phone doesnt overheat).
