My second arduino projects.
Diy eurorack modular synthesizer FM VCO module with arduino and YMF825.
YMF825 is DX7 type 4 OP FM sound source IC.
The sounds are usefull for ambient PAD and bell.
Get YMF825board from
www.switch-sci...
or
akizukidenshi....
(Probably limited to Japan)
Please support me to continue projects.

The chords sound wonderful, especially the minor chords. That at least you did really well. I think you’ve done splendidly all around, and you are a REALLY GREAT planner of extremely affordable diy modules from available boards out there! AWESOME job of making these things, and very affordable! Thanks for sharing!

This is really great! I love the simplicity and low parts count of your modules too, that is always a plus for DIY builds. I see you said in another comment that you don't want to release the code because of bugs - but, I'd be really grateful to see your code! I have built an Arduino VCO myself which works well (I can share my code with you if you want), but it's always interesting to see how different people have solved the issue with analogue input noise, and how to get good V/Oct resolution with only 10 bits. I solved those issues fairly well, but there are probably other approaches that I haven't thought of.

Thank you. I also had a hard time with the V / oct problem with the 10bit DAC. The memory effect of the multiplexer had a negative effect on the pitch. The countermeasure is a large capacitor. Also, since the YMF825 operates in 12 scales, the noise effect can be reduced by quantizing. In fact, the reason why you can't open the source code is not only a bug but also a copyright issue. This is because the 30-bit sound data is based on Yamaha's work.

Hey, I'm building a diy modular synth right now - I would love to see the code from your VCO and your build. Is there anything online or can you send me sth.? I m at the very beginning with my project so have no builds to trade so far but would shurely do as soon as I m into it (and its running without glitches) =)

@@chrisspatschek8986 I've uploaded one of my designs to Github: github.com/Blinken-Lights/synth-modules/tree/master/8-Bit-Waves - it's not perfect and I would do things a bit differently if I built it again. But you can see the analogue input circuitry and the lookup table used to turn 1V/Oct into frequency. It is able to track with analogue oscillators pretty well over a few octaves.

If you’re looking for soMething more comprehensive with the cvs and all, I am currently building a YM3812 based module that is a four operator FM module. The PCB uses surface mounts, and involves a LOT of panel wiring for lack of panel PCB, however with this you get added freedom with component form factors, or you could use your preference. It’s by Reckless Experimentation Audio, and I believe he is out of Florida. My experiences would lead me to believe that with this module there should be some room for firmware modifications, if not completely custom rewritten firmware altogether. So if you could manage another cv input for FM modulation, you could easily daisy chain these modules. IF I am wrong, it doesn’t mean that I am lying (just means that I believed what I said when I said it, ignorant as I may be)! So grab your data sheets, DL the developer’s environment, and poke around with it! I’ll bet you could pull something off that’s at least innovative albeit piggybacked from off this module. If you’re not very savvy with the coding stuff, you’ve got to start somewhere and I’d bet this module is a perfect candidate for innovations as you’re suggesting! Good luck!

You can also control FM parameters. However, Yamaha's FM parameters are complicated and it is difficult to find a sweet spot. That's why I implemented the preset selection feature.

Do you know of any 6op FM engines for Arduino? I want to make something like the Volca FM but with a sample engine and so it’s almost like a TG33.
@HAGIWO
@HAGIWO 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know 6op ic. The relatively new FM sound source IC can be modulated with waveforms other than sine waves, so I think that 4op is sufficient. As with REFACE DX.

Wait wait wait wait wait my brother wait!! Those chords in the background playing. Were those a separate module or is it a poly- or paraphonic mode or maybe you used two of the same module there? It sounded really cool with the background chords and then you were playing on your key step when caption said prototyping at about three minutes 50 seconds or so. Also I applaud the perf board build, and just how low the parts count on the BOM!! AWESOME WORK!! I’m gonna keep an eye out for your work!!

Thank you!! The PAD of the latter half of the performance is single mode. It sounds like a chord because it has a deep reverb. The YMF825 has a maximum of 16 polyphonics, so its potential is great. However, controlling 16 polyphonics with a modular synth is just too difficult.
