So incredibly cool to see my name on that screen. In our lab we have a Bosch CNC-machine from the early 1980s which is running, but the user interface is sooo bad, it also has about no memory at all. I have thought about a refurbish like this for ages - even just the Arduino should be an improvement.

This is running on a Pi and Teensy 4.1 now, its pretty powerful! I was lucky to be able reuse all the power stuff so the conversion was simple, maybe your machine will be also.

I operated a cnc plasma cutter that was only 1 of 3 made back in the 70s using punch cards to do basic shapes using oxyacetylene, but had been upgraded to a stationary plasma torch blowing down through a 6" tube into a metal box that had to be empty a couple times every shift. I loaded the sheet metal onto a platen of 1-1/2" steel ball bearings and the clamps al9ng the rear of the setup would move the plate along 2 axes, after zeroing out the metal sheet. The main screw drive bearings died during my shift as it would erratically lose it's zero and have to be reset. The company installed a new one which they had to do some torch cuts to make fit, but last I heard they invested in a $1/2 million laser to take this historical workhorse's place.

Nice project and really good to see older equipment given a new lease of life! That alone would be a great video but the feature film production values, back story, integrated mini-film, it's just jaw dropping. Love your video. You did get lucky with the machine being easily upgradable. I know of several upgraders that bought "Ground Hog Day" CNC machines. I was very pleased to see the grblHAL controller board is the one I designed, even if only for a split second. I'm working on a pro version of that board as well as one that uses a RasPi Pico. Maybe for a future project...
