Before this game, Jerry Rice had appeared in the playoffs for three seasons in a row, but not done much. From here on, his playoff stats became legendary.

Man what a great team. The defense was very underrated those years.

Charles Haley was a monster. Losing him to Dallas was huge.

Love warching this again years later. As a Minnesota kid, I was crushed that the Vikings folded, but then gladly cheered the 49ers on to win the Super Bowl. Now I live in the Bay Area.

Craig walking back to the sidelines after that last TD is such a cool moment. I don't know if it was really this way or just the broadcast's audio, but the crowd seemingly quieting down, then screaming immediately after his fist pump again is just a great moment.

"Roger Craig; turn it on Roger". Another classic piece of commentary by Pat Summerall- the master.

Absolutely then after the td sat back and let the crowd do its thing

That was a great call. I still remember it after all these years. What a GREAT game. Btw, I still remember when Greg Cox 38 blitzed in and decked Wilson.

No screaming like an idiot. Subtle.

Yes, most announcers today would be talking over the entire play, especially the wretched Joe Buck.

It’s crazy to think those 49ers were 6-5 at one point (Heck If not for the Steve Young TD run and a Montana-Rice last minute score, they were possibly two plays away from being 4-7!)

Yes what a wild season that was.

This season reminds me of last years Chiefs. Solid regular season but not the best that year followed by a postseason where they turned it on and won a title.

Dynasties are usually boring, but the '88 Niners were a great turnaround story.

We not only got the Vikings back in this game but also the divisional round the following year as well. Love the Niners. I was born in 1979 so I grew up on their 80s run.

New Year’s Day 1989. The 49ers grounds crew usually painted the end zones red for the playoffs I wonder why they didn’t for this game? When Jerry Rice scored 3 touchdowns in the first half I think the Vikings knew they were in for a long disappointing day. This Niners team was focused and determined to mow down every team in their way after the upsetting loss vs the Vikings the year before. The 49ers defense gave up only 1 touchdown all postseason. And the offense was near unstoppable in the two games leading up to Super Bowl XXIII.

I remember there was a moment near the end of the game when a network camera went up the 49er sideline, and Walsh and Montana gave a smiling pose together. Maybe that was their way of saying all the QB controversy during the regular season was behind them. :)

Bill Walsh said the he had worked that in 87 he had worked the Niners too hard and their legs were dead. Man, did the Niners' D tee off on Wade Wilson. Ouch!

Vikings were pretty darn good in 1988 but were bested by the Niners here. If they don’t allow the Steve Young run, maybe they go to the Super Bowl.
@deanladue5367Ай бұрын
Or lose to the Packers at Green Bay in week 15. That loss cost the Vikings the division title and home field advantage in the playoffs.

I never understood that label for them. As a giants fan I remember thinking it was dumb even back then. They basically had two fullbacks running the ball. A physical o-line that was dirty. Guys like Ronnie Lott, Charles Haley, Romo and Millen on defense. They were one of the most physical teams of all time lol
