350 chev motor blows up after full rebuild
cause to the motor throwing a rod was because 1 main cap bold was not torqued and had come loose
Yes there was oil on the lifers but not as much as there should have been
and no this was not the first motor to be built, was about no:436 have now done just shy of 550, and we always video the first starts in case this happens lol
enjoy the vid subscribe share and like for more

The fact this wasn't spraying oil all over the shop with the valve covers off should have been an instant hint to shut down.

@@450brucey2 well its real simple, if the oil level is correct, the pump is working properly, there is good oil pressure and oil is flowing in the correct direction, it should be making its way up to the top end of the motor in which case it should be splattering all over the place if the lifter covers are off. It was fairly obvious after a minute or two that something was not right with this motor.

Also revving it up and down didn't help, you wanna give it about 20 min or so steady at 2000 rpm the first time and ease it in after that, despite the lack of oil up top, it looks to be a broken rod, possibly from a spun bearing, this is why no revving the first time

My auto mechanics teacher told us years ago. When doing jobs like this, that is a one-man job. Because when you do a job like that and there's more than one person working on a job things like this go wrong, because no one knows who did what. And we were always told when doing these kind of jobs to double-check and triple-check ourselves. You can never go wrong double checking yourself and when in doubt double check it again!

I always do a mental preflight checklist after building an engine, and if there's two people i say it outloud. "Did you prime the oil pump" "Is it full of oil" "Is there antifreeze/ water" I hate when I see these things run on the stand with no water hose to them. They heat up super fast without water, and if you don't think they do let a normal one with water run 2 minutes and put your hand on the headers. Bet they'll burn you.

My thought exactly, in the beginning. He should have realized immediately after it started that there wasn't high enough oil pressure. He even grabs at the rocker arms and doesn't notice. But, that oil at the end looks mighty full of metal fragments, so it's possible (not probable), that the video quality is to blame for not seeing the oil flowing. Edit: After viewing the video a second time at about 2:11 you can see oil flow down the valve spring. Edit 2: I can't be certain (the video quality is rather crappy) but the part of the piston rod coming out of the oil pan appears to be the crankshaft end, not whristpin end. It possible he didn't torque the rod correctly, and it came loose, then the crankshaft shoved the rod through the oil pan.

@@jessemartinez3652, maybe if it's a 4 bolt main block, but it may still be cheaper to put aftermarket 4 bolt caps on a 2 bolt block, depending on the damage. That has the advantage of being a splayed 4 bolt. I haven't messed with with Chevy's for more than 30 years, but small block Fords are still not that hard to come by. We charged $100 per cylinder to put a sleeve in when I quite the machine shop in 91 (that was 50 labor plus about 50 for the sleeve), I can't imagine that it is less than about 300 (200 labor, 100 parts) now. Also, may have spun the mains or cam bearings in it as well. So is it possible that it could be fixed? Yes. But my money is that it's going in the scrap pile and he's looking for another block. What's salvageable? 6 or 7 pistons (it may have knocked the skirt off the one opposite the one that made a break for it), probably 6 rods, maybe the camshaft, depending on what it did before it came out the side and everything above the cam.

What usually happens are the inserts on the main bearings slide under each other on the crank. I had that happen to an old 1950 John Deere G popping Johnny. They better have some heavy duty socket breaker bars with heavy pipe. The crank will need to be built up again with chrome not steel, and then machined for correct size. Rings may be shot. Sorry to see that guys. That can happen going down the road also.

@@Bryan-Hensley I have built 100s of small block chevys over the years and I still do it every single time just to verify the pump is working and I’m going to get oil to the top end before spinning the motor over. That first few seconds of run time having oil is crucial to engine longevity. That being said , everyone has their own way and own opinion . But i dont know any true builder who dont prime the motor first.

No I'm not 'fucking stupid'. I've been a mechanic for over a decade. Old push-rod actuated valve trains didn't require valve covers as there wasn't oil being thrown around by camshafts. Therefore StewPidaso's statement that no valve covers = no oil is incorrect. In fact within seconds of the engine failing you can clearly see a pool of oil forming underneath the engine.

Years ago, I rebuilt a Fiat engine, had no oil pressure on starting. I stopped it immediately, tore it down and discovered (eventually...) a face-plate seal on the front of the crankshaft was the wrong size for the 'new' block. Only about 1mm discrepancy, but enough to bleed off all the oil. Tiny things can bring a project down.
