I don't own and can't afford an Elecraft, but I watched the whole thing anyway. New W2AEW is always welcome on a Saturday night!

This reminded me that I wanted to readjust my roofing filter settings now that I have an X3G signal generator, which worked great!

I run my KX3 and KXPA every Field Day. As you learn the rig you find it is better than the size lets on. The cool thing about my rig is that it belonged to a trade school electronics teacher before he passed.

This is so welcome that I'm going back and doing mine again Alan. Many thanks for this. I found the Elecraft installation sheet a bit problematic in trying to keep focus on what stage I was working on due to the repetitive nature of the steps. Also, I don't recall many of the adjustments you made. At the time, this led to apprehension as to whether the job was carried out properly. Also, Fred Cady's book intimated that it was a per band setting which also puzzled me because the filter is at audio frequency. Many thanks again Sir.

When I bought my KX3 more than 10 years ago, it was not an available option. I bought the filter kit last year and last week I told Alan I was going to be in town and asked if he would mind installing the filter for me. Of course, he said “Yes” and I dropped the radio off Friday and he returned it the next day (Saturday) at the wonderful W2QW hamfest in Piscataway, NJ. Thank you, Alan, for being such a good friend. Great video, as always, and hope you get a million Likes! 73 DE N2GJ

Excellent video sir. I need to retune my KX3 and the roofing filter I installed in it many years ago but never completed the alignment procedure as shown in your video. I too have a signal generator, but I am not certain if it must generate an RF signal or if a sine out would be sufficient to o the tuning. I have been trying to justify buying or building an RF signal gen so .... hmmmm . Thank you for posting this video.
@w2aew2 жыл бұрын
The procedure specifies a test signal that is in the 14MHz region, and between -73 and -33dBm.

@@w2aew sounds like a very good excuse for me to buy a better signal generator … thank you very much. Any suggestions on a generator to buy??
@w2aew2 жыл бұрын
@@michaeldavidheit The tricky part is getting something that has an adjustable output that is suitable for testing receivers. Many inexpensive siggens won't do that. If your needs are primarily testing HF gear, then a more "purpose built" unit like the Elecraft XG3 is a very nice option: elecraft.com/collections/test-equipment/products/xg3

It is a nice device, but man I would need to study for a year to operate all the buttons and menu options 😂. And then when finished, start all over again because I probably forgot half of it 🤨

Nice informative video. I think most users don't have access to an advanced signal generator and will have to use the internal referanse you briefly talked about. Could to please make a short video about using that? Doesn't have to be long as this one. Just the steps you skipped.

This episode was clearly in esoteric territory for me :) After a bit of research, I found out a roofing filter is basically a narrow(er) bandpass filter in a radio's IF circuitry... but, pfew, not being a HAM made me scratch my head there for a minute. Aha. Anyway your short concise videos, Alan, are always a pleasure to watch. I did read somewhere roofing filters should be used with an IF frequency ranging between 9 and 11 MHz. Is this true and if so what would be the reason? Efficiency?

I followed your steps and I have done all the settings in the menu. So far, so good. But you have a very strong signal with -33dBm? And I went to RXSBNL and had Phase 64 on my Display. But I can go up or down, and the signal goes up, in both directions. Why is that - any suggestions? The minimum peak is 64 - doesn't make any sense. I tried it several times, every time the same outcome. Filter is installed correctly and is okay (I guess). 73
