Thirty min HIIT on non lifting days has helped my crew with muscle recovery and fat loss. Alternate between zone 2 and zone 5. We find it helps regulate nitric oxide balance making the body more resilient and adaptable to physical stress. Plus, it helps fight lazy ass syndrome

I missed a take on VO2max or zone 2 training, perhaps because it is more related to endurance training and not cardio per se? I keep hearing VO2max is a key metric when it comes to life expectancy, is this true? If so, why wouldn’t we want to improve it?

Yep, this is out dated information in that sense, regarding vo2 max. Lots of research on this

Thanks to Menno for reminding us that no matter how many steps we take, times we lift, diets we optimize, and hours of sleep we get, we are all headed for the grave. Memento mori and carpe diem!

True. However, the goal is to keep that at bay as much as possible. That’s why I’ve settled on 2 workout with weights and two 30 min moderate cardio sessions per week while also getting 10000 steps 5 x week at my job.

I have found for myself that a 10-15 minute walk after meals helps with digestion (at least subjectively), but really it just helps me break up my steps throughout the day.

pretty sure improving vo2 max is more highly correlated with reduced all cause mortality than improving muscle mass is. i thought the answers provided for cardio for health were poor.

I really like the philosophy when I started tipping my toes into weightlifting and the first training phase was mainly about building the work capacity i.e. volume and basically cardio, a lot of reps and sets in higher volume (than in peaking phase for example) and short rest intervals like 2 minutes. Your tolerance for volume definitely improves, and you get hypertrophy benefits as well, and you will hardly notice your cardio is also in rather good shape after that, but it didn't feel like you were training cardio. However that left me in great shape to run long distances in relatively fast pace and it was all barbell training, no treadmills or exercise bike. Also what I did when I felt no reason to go outside during corona and winter, was listen to fitness podcasts like Stronger By Science, Iron Culture, Revive Stronger and walk in my apartment, a little path back and forth for that 60-120 minutes and rack up like 4000-8000 steps. It worked in lack of better things and it was hugely motivating to get those benefits and feel mentally better, while also using the time meaningfully, learning/entertaining myself with the podcasts. And I could do it at any point of day when it fit my schedules, I could even do it at 2 am or after breakfast, whatever suit well. No preparation, no planning or thinking about it because I would just start taking steps. This all is of course interesting, but Finland just brought up "health tax" idea of taxing fat, salt and sugar more to combat the decreasing general health, inactivity and dropping out of work life due to health reasons. Now there's a bone to bite for scientists.

As a type 1 diabetic taking a 10-20 minute walk after meals is absolutely huge for insulin sensitivity. It makes such a big difference especially eating all those carbohydrates and food in general for bodybuilding goals.

I think a good rule of thumb is for people to at least be able to go up 3 to 4 flights of stairs without getting completely winded. A huge percentage of the population would struggle just getting up 1 floor.

I’m not gonna lie, I can’t help but laugh a little when I see all the puffy dudes in my gym romping on the treadmill after a Saturday of beer and football. But, they got their poorly formed too heavy weights in right? I have learned that with proper nutrition and a solid strength training regimen, 7-8 hours sleep, no alcohol, you can literally do zero cardio, just some walking and get absolutely shredded. At least in my experience. Not trying to brag as I’m not big, but I would rather be shredded than big anyway and cardio is simply not as important as a lot of people think it is FOR weight loss alone. If you are in the military or need to have good cardio health for your sport than it’s a different conversation but I love the fact that I can walk my way to sub 10 percent body fat. I think cardio is the most misunderstood thing of anything I see in my gym, or when I watch people jog on the street. Exhausting themselves mostly for nothing. Just my opinion but I do feel one should have good cardio health for a healthy body. But for bodybuilding, especially naturals, I think walking wins. Thanks fellas.
