35mm Film photography at night? Sure! We all know that works. But how good will long time exposure photography work using a 35mm film camera, in this case, the Nikon FE, and just set it to its automatic exposure setting? Will reciprocity failure be a problem? Will the long exposures look good?
Let´s find out how good the Nikon FE handles Night time long time exposure photography, in this new video!
For testing, I Used Fomapan 100 and developed it in Rodinal 1+25 for 3.05 minutes at 20°C under constant agitation.

Well done mate! I have the FE and have captured shots as long as 34 seconds but this camera can expose for much longer.

Yah i found that out during the creation of this video 😅. I accidentally set the aperture to f 16 and tried to do a long exposure. Aborted after around 10 Minutes (felt time not using a watch)

@@RetroPixel_analog Ken Rockwell reports in his review of this camera that in auto mode it can go for over an hour but I haven’t tried it.

I can not believe these amazing results with such a cheap film. Did you use aperture priority mode? No reciprocity failure at all?

Since the aperture is manual it kind of always is in priority. I really just set my aperture and set the camera to automatic. I did not care about reciprocity at all. Just did all of this super experimentally. Besides that, i would say that Foma is not nearly as bad as many people say. I nearly always have good results, unless i screw it. Only bad thing i can say is, that every now and then they have some artifacts or impurities in the emulsion but its not too bad. I really like shooting the 100 and 400 speed films.

I used something between 1.8 and 5.6. Only for the last shot with the phone booth, i accidentally used f22 and the picture took forever. 🤣

Hi, congrats to the Nikon FE it's a great camera! To answer your question: No i used absolutely no flash for the long time exposures. I just looked for some scenes, that i thought had some interesting lighting. Thanks for watching. Also keep in mind that depending on the film you use, the results may vary. I used Fomapan 100 rated at ~ 80 and developed normally. Greets

what do you mean by *getting the right effect*? (google translate) For me it always depends on what my goal is, for Portraits at night i would never use the automatic function for some quick (or less quick) city scapes i would do it.

Hardly seems worth using film if you're just going to change it in digital post production. May as well have used a digital camera in the first place.

Hey, usually I would say you are right but please do not forget, that i primarily digitize pictures in order to use them on KZbin or my website. My regular prints are done in the darkroom. I also always try, not to do edits to digitized images, that i could not do the same way in the darkroom. And after scanning you need some esditing, since linear scans just do not look nice. The only time I really digitally edit more then usual is in color film shots or digital shots. Greetings
