Common mistakes: Im fine Im well/good( saying I'm good is incorrect if you're referring to your health) Im doing good Easy responses: Im pretty good Im pretty well Im pretty fine Interesting answers: I've never been better So far so good Cant complain Better than i deserve Silly responses: If i had a tail i would wag it Flirty responses: Word on the street is that im pretty good Im great, but a totally biased. 'OK' alternatives: Im alright So so Not too bad Could be better/ i could also be worse Same old, same old Im alive/surviving Good enough Sarcastic responses: Im alright now, but there's still time for everything to go horribly wrong. Better now that im talking to you. Negative responses: Im not going to lie .....I feel terrible.. I'm not doing so well/I'm struggling a bit Im snowed under. Its been a bit of a tough week. I'm not having an easy time at the moment. Avoiding question: You don't want to know! Don't ask! Honestly just don't ask me Do i have to answer that? I think you already know. Shhh.. it's too early to tell. Ill responses: Im feeling a bit under the weather. Overworked and underpaid. Slowly but surely dying actually, aren't we all? Funny and negative responses: Somewhere between blah and me. Just hug me and leave it at that.

Something similar happens with me and my friends: Friend- "How are you" Me- "Yes" Friend- "What do you mean yes?" Me- "I mean yes" Friend- "But... Yes isn't a response to the question I asked" Me- "Why?" Friend- "Because... It's not..." Me- "You sure?" Friend- "Yes" Me- "Now look who's saying yes! Well, well, well, see how the tables turn." Friend- "Why are you like this *insert my name" Me- "Hmm... Maybe cuz I was born..." Friend- "Okay then... I'm just gonna slowly walk away" Me- "Okay I'm gonna stay here and regret all of my life decisions." Edit- I just added "friend" and "me" to the beginning of each sentence so it is less confusing.

I grew up in Georgia, USA. We sometimes say things like "I'm finer than a frog's hair." or "If I were any better I'd be twins." The latter is funny to me, because I AM a twin. If I'm so-so, I might say, "fair to partly cloudy." or "Fair to midlin'." If I'm physically ill, I might say "I'm sicker than a dog; I know, because I have a dog, and she's doing pretty well." OR if I'm VERY sick, "I'd have to get better to die."

I know and love all of those rural American phrases. My favourite of the ones you cited is "If I were any better I'd be twins" -- it really cracks me up. Usually I break the rule of a different video you posted. I with a smile and cheery voice I ask, "Hi how you doin''? Many reply cherily, "I'm pretty good." To which I tell them , "You're two steps ahead of me. I'm not good or pretty." Usually, they chickle. Sometimes they take a crossways look and keep walking away from me. For either response I give a smile.

When any one asks “How are you?” they really do not want to know how you are doing. It is just one of many ways to start a conversation. Most people really do not want to know how you are doing.
@whitedragon13554 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, I always ask my friends how they are doing rather than just having the desire to start a conversation when starting the day. Sometimes you just really wanna know if they are feeling good or bad.
@gswcooper71624 жыл бұрын
This is why most of the time when someone asks me how I am at the start of a conversation, I'll respond with a vague and non-committal "Eeeeehhhh...". If they ask me that later in the conversation, I'd choose to take that as a sign that they're actually at least somewhat interested in the answer. xD

Person: How are you? Me after watching the video: I'm fluent in over six million forms of responding to "HOW ARE YOU?"
@natew55444 жыл бұрын
how are you? my response: "yes... i acknowledge your existence because you do not care about how i am, you are just using a superficial greeting to acknowledge my existence... unless you actually care and want to sit here for hours and listen to my honest in-depth answer to that vaguely humorous and interpretational question?" lol
@LiLBrotato4 жыл бұрын
I really agree with everything you said but the part when you wanna answer it with 'hours of in-depth' disclosure , Like no offense tho , You know who could do that a really close loved one , it could be a family member , someone special , Partner or spouse , But just randoms and friends will mind the in-depth expose , And you can still spontaneously answer the question honestly with a brief response , Like if you're feeling down or good or depending on whatever is happening with you.
@natew55444 жыл бұрын
@@LiLBrotato yea, most "randoms" and "friends" probably dont want to listen to it. but the point is figuring out who would care enough to want to listen. to me thats what matters. and there are very few people that would. those are the only people i would call my friend. even if i dont know them or will never see them again after a passing by

Most of the time (in American at least) “How are you?” is asked as more to be polite than due to actual interest. Unless you know someone personally, you’re generally expected to just say something positive or neutral and move along. People generally don’t want to hear a detailed personal story, and they may even be uncomfortable if you start sharing one. Most of the responses in the video would be acceptable with most people. Expressing negativity to strangers or acquaintances is not common though.

In Canada most common answer is: I'm good, thanks!
@dammar1172 жыл бұрын
I live in Canada, and I can't stand that question. Why should I be expected to say "good" if that is not the truth? Why should I be forced to lie? And if it is the truth, why should I have to give an account of how I'm feeling or how I'm doing? I find this questions so invasive. Just say, "Hi" or "Good to see you" (if you mean it). Get over your social awkwardness.
