Ram Berto I honestly like Mr. Clean and a brush. I used an old baby bottle brush from the kitchen that was retired, scrubbed into each port, then high pressure washer in all directions. If you have compressed air, I’d blow it out after and set it out to dry. If it was really greasy, I would use jet fuel or kerosene and a stiff brush, then red scotch bright. I’ve literally duct taped a scotch brite around a rod and used it to scrub with. Also, harbor freight has a cheap set of brushes that work well.

Hello 👋 great excellent videos👍🏻. I don’t mind the lengthy end build videos for Mopar small blocks at all. Please keep them or any videos coming. I wanted to ask you a couple quick questions, I see that you use Lucas as part of your engine assembly on this 360, and the one you did for the red Dodge pickup. How has that worked out for you? And do you continue to use it after the engines are together and running? I’ve thought about using it but don’t know if it will really be of any benefit. I’m a new subscriber and a Mopar die hard, looking forward to your next video👍🏻
@JustMoparJoe4 жыл бұрын
Jerome Jakubowski thanks! We run Lucas in everything we own. Including bracket cars with 440’s, 528’s, etc. Usually I use it as a mix in engine assembly 50/50. I then pour cam additive into the engine and the rest 10w30. Lately I’ve been buying Motorcraft diesel 10w30. After the cam is broke in, I’ll change oil and filter, then refill with same oil and a quart of Lucas every oil change. The running video of this engine comes out tomorrow 7-3-20, at 8am. nate hull stock pushrods and retainers were fine. Had to upgrade springs to a set of comps. I believe stock cams were somewhere around .420-.440 lift. I always have my machine shop pick the springs for my heads, , after I drop them the cam card, because they can measure for coil bind, and spring inside and outside diameters. They can also buy the right springs that won’t require much shimming. Hope this helps👍🏼

Hey Joe, I noticed that you used the Fel-pro 1213 intake gaskets that block the heat crossovers. Have you ever had them burn through? That gasket also covers the heat escape passage that's above the crossover port. Will that portion of gasket burn out as well? I'm running Edelbrock performer intake & carb, w/1" spacer. Also what's the difference between the 1213 & 1213S3 gaskets. Does the 1213 also have a steel core? Currently live in Washington, but will soon be moving to PHX, AZ..
@JustMoparJoe3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick. I haven’t had the intake off yet to look for the burn through. I’m assuming they might over time. My future plan is to swap my weind out for my Edelbrock air gap and see if it makes a difference at the track. When that happens, I can cut through my gaskets and check for any steel. They didn’t seem to have any if I recall correctly. I will buy the 1213S3’s if they have steel made into them next time.

@@POSTIVETHINKING check your threads on the bolts and run a tap down with a small amount of grease on it, to help clean out the threads in the head. If the bolts look worn, you can buy similar at a hardware store. I would look for grade 8, and keep the factory length. If the bolts look good, and have 3 threads engaged, you should be able to start torquing them down with your torque wrench. Some lifters will be plunged because those cam lobes are raised at that time.

If it’s a real street car you can leave it open. Most strip cars block it off. If you buy the gasket with an “S” at the end, it has a steel layer inside it. I did not have to grind any around the distributor area. I would recommend matching up the ports because they were cast crooked.

I don't like soaking the lifters, and definitely do not recommend pumping the lifters up. They can lockup on you and not bleed down to accommodate preload. I had that issue on an engine I built many years ago. It ran awful for several minutes until the lifters bled down and allowed the valves to rest on the seats. Fortunately, it was a stock cam, and there was plenty of clearance. Also, you don't want any extra pressure on the cam lobe/lifter face during break-in. The lifters will pump up in just a few seconds, especially if you primed the engine prior to initial start up. I just give the lifters a quick dip in fresh oil and that's plenty good for initial assembly.
