Mondim de Basto | Village and Sanctuary

Between Minho and Tras-Os-Montes a large region surrounded by mountains and watered by the Tâmega River, which is the land of Basto (Celorico de Basto, Basto Mondim and Basto's headwaters). The name "Basto" has to do with a chaste population of Celtic origin that lived here in this region the "Básulos". The spiritual heart of this region is on Mount of Lady of Grace, ancient hill of São Veríssimo of the beginning of Christianity. But before they are very serious, there was a neolithic population here, today already disappeared their vestiges. Beside the lady of grace there is a lot to which they call "Monte Clown" that derived from the palace, because when building for him a path were discovering remains of a wall, indicating here the presence of an old neolithic castro.
In this former administrative region of Basto, there were tin mines, used for the manufacture of bronze, attracting populations coming from far away.
