RECORDED ON JUNE 19th 2020.
Dr. Joseph Henrich is Professor and chair of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He is interested in the question of how humans evolved from "being a relatively unremarkable primate a few million years ago to the most successful species on the globe", and how culture affected our genetic development. He is also the author of The Secret of Our Success and The WEIRDest People in the World: How the West Became Psychologically Peculiar and Particularly Prosperous.
In this episode, we focus on Dr. Henrich’s new book, The WEIRDest People in the World. We first talk about innate anchors, how societies evolved in complexity, the role that agriculture played, and the various aspects of WEIRD psychology. We then get into the Catholic Church’s Marriage and Family Program of the Middle Ages, and the different aspects of sociality that it influenced, including marriage, monogamy, urbanization, legal systems, work ethics, and even science and the Enlightenment values. We also talk about how we might evolve psychologically in the future, social engineering, and the replication crisis in social psychology. Toward the end, we answer some questions from a follower.

The example of reading & the bible in the 16th century sounds weird and can't generalize, but perhaps it's just meant as a local example 🤔

Male circumcision is arguably also maladaptive, and that has lasted for thousands of years.

Just a heads-up: I'm getting adds every minute or two (not exaggerating). This makes it very difficult to follow the conversation with the constant interruptions - which I assume is not what you want, as it defeats the whole point of the show.

If it bother you, could you try using AdBlock? I am still trying to figure out how to have ads on without having too many of them, with the new uploading tool.

@@TheDissenterRL Sure, no worries. I'm just giving you feedback because the ads were really too much, today. Perhaps having one ad between every topic (or every 2, 3, 4 topics) would be better for the flow of the conversation (as you already have the timers in the description).

Buy into KZbin premium for 12 dollars per month. No more ads. If you regularly KZbin, its well worth it. Better than paying for Netflix
