Hey Jerry, love the video. Seagull is a Godin family guitar; a Canadian company. I am really pleased how you presented the guitar. It's not a Gibson or Martin but one that is affordable by most anyone yet had a pleasing sound. And yes, I think your antler nut does perk it up; plugged in it should be great. My bother in law has one and is apologetic about it: 'It's just a Seagull'. Don't know why, it's a fantastic guitar for the price, and pretty good regardless of price. Canada makes great guitars across the price range. I have a John McQuarrie (Northwood Guitars) which is up there with my Martins (in both price and quality), which is a high bar for me as I'm a huge Martin fan. I'm not Canadian, by the way!

I've been playing since the Harding Administration and NEVER found a great way to wind strings. I'm gonna go out, buy strings, and give that a try. I think that's how most guitars come from the factory and I could never understand how they wound them. Easy peasy! Thanks.

Hi Jerry, I always use Flitz metal polish when I'm detailing a trumpet, cornet, or a flugel horn. I have also used it on my keyboards and it's a fantastic product and non toxic. Your videos are like comfort food to me...and I mean that in a good way.

The Cali case that came with my Gibson 1934 L5 reissue had a similar issue with the storage compartment lid. The lid was there but the fabric had pulled loose letting the lid fall inside. I pulled the fabric off, attached the lid with a brass hinge and glued the fabric back on. It looks original but works a lot better. It's just about perfect!

Another great video Jerry. I look a course on guitar design and building in Chicago. We were taught that the sale must be profiles to a near knife edge. The angle it is cut should be the same as the angle of the headstock. The string vibrates between the two knife edges for best sound transference through the bridge into the soundboard. Just though I would add a comment on "plywood". I think it gives too much of a connotation of cheapness, when a laminate can be anything but. A good laminate is not a cheap option really. Besides there is a lot to be said for laminates in terms of strength and less susceptibility to moisture. A good hardwood laminate can be better than a cheap piece of solid timber. The Gibson ES guitars are laminated construction. No-one thinks of them as cheap. I have tried a few Seagulls, but don't like the tuners or the necks really, although they have a good reputation for being well made.

I have a Seagull S6. It’s 15 years old, and could use some touch up. This video has shown me a lot that I can apply to all of my guitars. The sound is a lot more vibrant than when you started the setup. Much appreciated; thanks for posting.

thx Jerry, I'm a proud Canadian too, the Seagull guitar are known to be a tad dull sounding but that antler saddle made a huge difference plus being a tighter fit too. Good tips indeed.

15:52 for this my go-to luthier uses some, what we call ''steel wool'' (not sure whether there you call it the same). Goes perpendicular over the frets with it.

I never thought of cutting leather with your new 3D laser cutting machine. I was going to mention your adjusting the truss rod with strings removed, but I know you have the experience to accurately estimate how much the bow will change after you put strings on. It certainly saves time if one can do that.

If you find yourself gluing fabric often you might look into Sobo. It’s a fabric glue I used to glue fabric to panels for trade show displays. It is very strong and never released.

Some of the best recordings I've ever got have been with my late 80's Seagull S6 Cedar/Mahogany, brilliant instrument. I string it with Martin Silk & Steel now, great fingerpicking sound.

Good fix! I've had great luck making fabric hinges in guitar cases using hot glue. It will not soak into fabric, it sticks to everything, and it remains flexible over time.

I get a little nervous every time you use the side cutters to pull bridge pins even though I know how gentle you are. Please use an appropriate tool for it that can't harm the bridge or the pins. My college roommate came home with a cedar top Seagull one day that He'd found it in a pawn shop.. Neither of us had heard of it but after playing it a bit we figured the pawn shop didn't know what they had. This was before the internet but we both looked into the guitar and found it was a relatively new company (a little more than ten years at the time) in Canada.. I spent the next several months checking pawn shops hoping lightening would strike twice but it never did. They are great sounding "North American" made guitars. I never did find one for the steal that he got.

@22:30 thank goodness for an American speaking up for decimal over fractions. I totally don't care if you want to use imperial or metric, but when you get into the sort of tolerances you need to read with digital calipers, it is crazy to still want to stick with fractions. I was a toolmaker in the UK when we switched to metric. We were already using decimal on machine slides of course, and it took maybe a week to realise how much better it was working with metric. I still use inches sometimes, but never, _ever_, would I be using fractions.

Right on, Trevor. Fractions Suck. Especially, for this kind of work. (but, truly, for everything) When I was in the 5th grade, in the US, I'm 68 now, the schools tried to teach metric. It didn't work very well. The main problem was, they tried to teach it by using comparisons and conversions. The proper way to learn a new measuring system is by usage. Conversion and comparison just complicate the process, without any benefit. Back to fractions. When dealing in fractions, you are working with a multitude of scales (2,4,8,16:1). Stupid. It, certainly complicates manufacturing, but I think we have been getting away from that, in the past 20-30 years. I really like the metric measurements. Move the decimal point. Simple.

I have an old S6 and I love it. I have more expensive guitars, but the old Seagull is the one that sits at the foot of my bed. I especially like that it has a slightly wider neck what is good for us finger pickers. Does that guitar have a wider neck?

I have 12 string that will have to have it's tuners replaced (they don't hold tune and one of them broke [this was a fun "what can I do with a heatgun and a cheap kit" project guitar ]) I'll have to test out this stringing method, thanks.

Not so much changing them as Finding them. For a 6 string, 3 on a plate are Everywhere. For a 12 string, 6 on a plate are Hen's Teeth. Building a 12, you can find them, they are available. Replacing??? You won't find them to fit.

Have you tried the Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze strings? I went through all they sell at my local music store and found them to have the best tone. The fullness of phosphor bronze with the clarity of new 80/20 bronze, AND IT LASTS! I wasn’t impressed with any nickel alloy or coated strings at all, they sound dead to me. This was an expensive journey, but the result was worth it. So was making bone saddle and nut, which was the first thing I did to the guitar. Why do thy call 80/20 strings “Bronze”? It’s 80% copper and 20% zinc, that’s BRASS! lol.

What is the difference in result between using Semi-Chrome metal polish verses Flitz metal polish on a satin guitar finish? I have a couple of Seagull guitars and I have managed to get the guitar's finish too glossy in some spots. What would be a good way to restore the shiny spots on the guitar back to the original satin finish look?

Instead of linseed oil what about tung oil? Linseed oil dose not dry all that well. Great for out door tool handles

I like linseed oil mainly because it doesn't dry as much. The difference is you have to wipe it off really well and then wait a few minutes and wipe it off again.

In a product guide from Seagull, they don't recommend and wax or any finish whatsoever for the body of guitar! They just say wipe it of with a dry cloth. Using wax or something similar can deaden the properties of solid cedar top, which is left in satin finish on purpose!

Much as I like Hiscox cases, this lid is a really poor design and awful to repair on an old case, when the glue has degraded to a gungy mess. Great care has to be taken, as most adhesives will dissolve the polystyrene liner. ['Canopy' is a new one on me, I must get some] For bonding to the new plywood lid, spray glue would have been my choice but that would have meant a huge masking job and that is one adhesive that will destroy the foam if it comes into contact.
