It was done beautifully! I've picked up the whistle again this week after 15 years, and this song is being added to my "must learn" list. Really glad your channel popped up in one of my youtube searches, you're an inspirational player for someone like me.

Hi Chris! I had a longer add in front of your video, and since that is the only way for me to give back a little, I let it run, and walked away from my pc. Then I heard you play, and I "saw" you play on a cliff by the waterside somewhere, in the middle of nowhere... That is how it sounded to me, magical, taking you to places.. Beautiful! Thank you!!! Much love! 🤗

Wonderfully played and the accompaniment is beautiful as well. The range of pitches and timbres you can coax out of a metal pipe amazes me. I still have goosebumps. I had to listen to it twice. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world.

Beautiful!!! Literally as you uploaded this, I had an urge to play this for a dear friend who has passed suddenly and tragically. I had been listening to Davy Spillane wondering how he gets that awesome vibrato, searched for a video and you came up. Thank you for this fantastic video, you nail it. Now to see how fast I can move my fingers ;) playing this on a low D, as a flautist where all vibrato came from my lungs and throat. I have whistle envy now too, that Goldie has an amazing sound.

Emotional tune and beautifully played. Although I would like to hear your version of May Morning Dew without the keyboard. My guess: it would sound even better.
@jamesdonalfaulkner2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I am sure that the keyboard player is very good, but I have long been of the opinion that you cannot mix "mechanical" instruments such as the piano with low whistles, the pipes and such like with their frequent glissandos. Just saying, like!

Should be fine unless you have very tiny hands. It's not technically the hardest instrument out there and practice goes a long way
@ElijahG984 жыл бұрын
Go for it, I've always believed its better to try something that way I dont look back and be like "I wish I learned this (insert thing)". You can get some small whistles for cheap, like Generation D C and Bb. Bb being closet to a low whistle (its in between high and low whistles). Tony dixon 1 piece plastic low D isnt the nicest but good starter if you want to start out with a low whistle and not break the bank. Theres lots of tutorials out there. Best of luck.

Go for it, I'm 57 and 2 weeks into practicing, love it when a few notes sound ok, using a spare room to practice and not piss everyone else off, go for it! You have to start from somewhere!

@@ChrisMcMullan Hi Chris, I have been meaning to write to you for a while to request lessons from your good self on the pipes. Your interpretation of May Morning Dew has now inspired me to action. I play the uilleann pipes and am privileged to own a set by Cillian very similar to yours. However, I am, first and foremost, a singer-guitarrist-bouzoukiist and prefer to play slower, emotional airs on the pipes - often singing along with them. (I believe that I am actually one of the last pipers in Ireland to maintain the tradition of singing with the pipes. Correct me if I am wrong. ) And so I would greatly appreciate some help from you with respect to ornamention, efficient blowing, etc on the pipes. Do you still have any slots available? Best wishes, Jim Faulkner

Very interested in what you are doing with your hands. You seem to be crossing them over and playing some of the top three holes with your right index finger? Never seen that before. Are you doing it for speed?

I actually, didn't release I was doing it until after. I think it's because my index can move faster for more vibrato.

Good. Lord. ....I didn't think ANYONE could top Davey Spillane's version or John McSherry's version or Phil Hardy's version!!! Sweet baby Jesus....YOU beat them, hands down. A question for you please. I already play the whistle, tenor D's and a Low D. What key did you play this in? My mom is probably on her way to Heaven in the coming years. I'd _LOVE_ to play this "when the time comes". I've got the score for this but I know it's in a key that I don't have yet. Is it a Low G? It's got a beautiful tone. Bright but not harsh. Love the accompaniment too. Slainte!!

@@ChrisMcMullan I learn something new every time I watch this, in regards to technique. Very clever to slide your right hand up so your right index finger can create vibrato instead of the ring finger of you left hand. That's something I've struggled with - trying to create vibrato with my left, non-dominant hand. Great presence of mind to move your left hand to create room for your right, then move it back down. Cheers!
