Japanese Propaganda and Filipino Counterpropaganda
During the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, 1941-1945
Propaganda was a key weapon during World War II. The Japanese had learned from
the Germans and had a well-developed propaganda apparatus when they invaded the Philippines in December 1941. They realized that they had to win the hearts and minds of Filipinos and wean them from the Americans, who they were fighting side by side with. Various propaganda lines were utilized, such as emphasizing shared Asian heritage, the Filipino quest for independence, and demonizing the Americans. The Japanese also published leaflets directed at weakening the American resolve while fighting in the Philippines. Life under Japanese occupation was an ordeal, and Filipinos quickly saw through the emptiness of Japanese propaganda. Although less refined than the Japanese propaganda machine, Filipino guerrillas, as well as the Americans who fought with them, circulated leaflets and other forms of propaganda that effectively countered the Japanese campaign.
Following Dr. Jose's presentation at the 36th Annual Symposium, Marie Silva Vallejo answers questions from the audience. She is the Author of “Dauntless: The 1st & 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments, United States Army”.
