Note to self: When blowing the alcohol and ink mixture around, make sure to blow it OVER the edge of the top to avoid this. Also if you put extra coats of gesso on the canvas before starting and then sand it down gradually to using an extra fine grit sandpaper, you can avoid the canvas blocking the ink movement. You did a gorgeous job! Thank you for sharing your learning experience with us!

@@LorrieBrewer I can’t imagine sanding gesso. Wouldn’t that change the appearance of the ink?? I’ve never worked with inks before but I’m anxious to try. Would an old floor tile with a very VERY mild gloss finish take inks? I have old tiles and thinking about trying it.

Have you ever try Tim Holtz's Blending Solution? I pot some in a 1 oz cont w/ a few drops of ink & stir. It evaporates much slower than isopropyl alcohol. But when it does evaporate colors become stronger.

Monica Camilli I almost missed your question! KZbin didn’t notify me since it was posted below someone else’s comment. I think it thought you were replying to them lol. Yes, I have used the blending solution, but personally I don’t really love it. It does keep the colors more vibrant, but it leaves a shiny residue on the paper that I don’t like the look of. Also, I use so much alcohol that it would break me up buying blending solution in those amounts lol. I seriously would use a bottle for 1-2 paintings most of the time. Many people prefer the blending solution and if you like the way it works and don’t mind the higher price then stick with it. I think people paint better if they are more comfortable with certain supplies and brands sometimes. 💜😃

@LorrieBrewer4 жыл бұрын
I know that quite a few use gesso. I wasn't sure if it would stain or not with alcohol inks, so I decided to go with the Kilz. Although I didn't have any trouble because of the way I painted this one, one of my viewers did say that they had used Kilz and had it stain. If I start noticing it staining then I'll probably switch to something else. 💜

@@LorrieBrewer I have just learned something new from you... because when I have to use Kilz, that is when I"m covering up something ugly, bad paint.... so I associate Kilz with trying to KILL another paint... plus it smells and it's expensive. Hi Laurie, I haven't been around for a while but I always enjoy your videos. You mentioned that the ink doesn't flow the same on the gessoed canvas and I believe this may be resolved if you do a second and third coat of your own gesso on top of the kilz and sand it in between. each coat. Wipe it down with 91% alcohol and then top it with a "slick" acrylic sealer before you paint. The sanding between 2 gesso coats fills in the grain of the canvas and creates a smooth surface for the ink. Hope this proves helpful. Your commentary is so helpful. I appreciate the tip on angling and direction with alcohol and metallics. Thanks again for all you do. I also want to add how smart the use of peripads for a table covering really is! It absorbs the extra ink. Never thought of that. I've been using Dollar Tree plastic tablecloths and am always leery that the ink will roll onto the floor before I see it.
@LorrieBrewer4 жыл бұрын
😃 You are probably right about prepping the canvas more. I tend to want to get that part done quickly and don’t put enough coats on or sand much between them. I will give your way a try to see if I can get a smoother surface 😃. I use a plastic tablecloth under the pad just to catch anything that it misses, but the pads are definitely very helpful. I don’t worry nearly as much when I’m working on the edge of my paper where ink is likely to run off. 💜💜

6862211 Thank you! I loved the way this color combination turned out together! Lol One of my granddaughters said it looks like a dip dyed Easter egg 😂. 💜💜

Lorrie Brewer very cute! Where in NC are you from? I have a son in High Point

We are from near the Grandfather Mountain and Boone area. Probably about 3 hours or so from High Point. It’s a gorgeous area near the Blue Ridge Parkway. We really miss it and all our family that are there! Southeast Washington is about as different as it can get from the Western NC mountains!
