We had the same issues with those locks when we were bringing our newly-bought boat down from the Middlewich Branch this time last year! Those overflows were awful! 🙈 Well done for getting through them!

Hi Pat & Eileen, Super Vlog. I have watched hundreds of canal vids and this is the first time I have seen the Tyrley locks. Great to see your attempts at getting into the lock. All the best, Paul.

Hi Paul, not sure if we have seen any on these locks either, that’s why we wanted to share how difficult they were especially for a couple of novices. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍

I like the way you showed us the rain and what it's like boating in it. To me, even if you're not moving rain adds more romance to an already romantic setting. Thanks from NZ.

The first time we did those locks was in a GRP cruiser. I am amazed it didn’t disintegrate. Much easier going down, you just give it some wellie when leaving the lock :)
@ournarrowboatquest48945 жыл бұрын
Hiya, yes I can imagine it would be easier going down, you haven’t got to aim for the by-wash and hope you get moved over enough to enter the lock. 😂. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
@GroveDave5 жыл бұрын
We came through those locks about a week after you. Still loads of water coming through. The by- wash from those locks is beastly. Don’t know how the old timers managed it with just a horse and a barge pole. No Bow thrusters for them.
@ournarrowboatquest48945 жыл бұрын
GroveDave - Agree, they certainly are a challenge, and the bow thrusters give an extra push. Not everyone’s idea of boating but why not use em if you’ve got em!! 😂. Thanks for watching and commenting!👍

New subscriber, hello. Tyrley is oddly enough pronounced Tur-ley. We did these last year and yes, those by-washes get fierce! If you watch and wait though they do tend to ebb & flow so if you pick the right moment they can be quite timid. Also...we (well me...wife was doing the paddles) got grounded in the small pound one or two locks up where there's no lock landing...despite warning on gate not to go to the towpath side...which I didn't see at the time. All good fun. :)
@ournarrowboatquest48945 жыл бұрын
Hello Dean, welcome aboard. I knew that it wasn’t pronounced how it was spelt but couldn’t remember the proper pronunciation. Those by-washes were pretty fierce, must be quite difficult as a single handed due to the lack of lock landing. Good job they are not too far apart. They way we look at it is that it’s all an experience whether good air bad. 🤣Thanks for watching. 👍

Just done my RYA helmsman course in the teeth of the recent windy weather and that was tough enough but that side wash looks horrendous. Good bit of boatmanship there.
@ournarrowboatquest48945 жыл бұрын
They certainly were horrendous, however skippering a boat in the wind is just as bad. We don’t move when it’s windy, not if we don’t need to anyway. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍

These locks were my first ones as a solo boater. It was interesting to say the least and the top lock leaks like hell. It was a lot easier for me I think as I have a 40ft boat with a 41HP engine
@ournarrowboatquest48944 жыл бұрын
These locks were certainly tricky, it didn’t help that a boat went up in front of us and was emptying out into the pound above and the by washes were overflowing! Thanks for watching and commenting!👍

Hi we're hiring a boat next week and possibly doing the four counties ring. Do you think it seems quieter going that way up the canal as opposed to round the other way or haven't you noticed much difference?

Hi Robert, to be honest haven’t really noticed any difference. It’ll be busier however if you are travelling in the Easter holidays. We will be on the Trent and Mersey heading North by then. Be sure to say hello if you pass. 👍

Lovely video. Wow radio communication ! Excellent.i guess it's a must really ! Is it an oak Tree ? I love all the video footage of the trees ! You obviously appreciate them like me ! Do you not have solar panels ? (Sorry will get through all your videos, if you talked about that already.) Stunning scenery and cottages like a lot of the canal network !

Thank you Rachel, hope you enjoy catching up on our journey so far. We have got solar panels but the flexible type so they fit flat to our roof. We live being in the thick of nature but we are not great a recognising or remembering names. Love the canal network it’s got some great history. 👍

Pat/Eilen. Did they teach to drive that machine like that under those conditions or was it instinct. All of the cascading water a locks, where was it coming from ? (off th fields after the storm?. When you do your wonderful prologue at the start, you rather remind us of Morcambe and Wise, or is it Bill & Ben, Please keep it going it makes it alive.All the very wishes to you both and will now really look forward to more.John & Doreen.
@ournarrowboatquest48945 жыл бұрын
Hello John/Doreen. Great to hear from you. No, we were not taught to drive under those conditions, but you just have to get on with and work out the best way forward, so I suppose instinct does have something to do with it. The cascading water comes from the canal pound between the next two locks. Ha ha , more likely Bill and Ben or the Krankies but less funny. 😂🤣. Hope you are both well, thanks for watching and commenting. 👍xx

I’m not a fan of those locks. Also, the towpath up there was so muddy when we went up there last Easter that a kind young man walking his dog held my hand as I walked between a couple of locks as I nearly ended up in the cut! I think I will take my wellies with me when we go that direction next month!
