At the invitation of the video poster, I have done some more research. The International Hydrological Organisation has defined the Southern Ocean as being the waters below the latitude of 60°S, with the effect being that organisation defines the waters immediately south of Australia across to Tasmania as being the Indian Ocean. That standard is not yet formally internationally ratified. However, in Australia, cartographical authorities define the Southern Ocean as including the entire body of water between Antarctica and the south coasts of Australia and New Zealand, and up to 60°S elsewhere.Coastal maps of Tasmania and South Australia label the sea areas as Southern Ocean and Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia is described as the point where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. I'm going with the Australian cartographers on this one, the ocean to the south of Australia and the one to its west feel, look and have weather like very different bodies of water.
