If the fuel pump failed and seized up it's best to replace the fuel pump relay under the dash. The excess current pulled by the pump motor will have knackered the contacts on the relay. I had one fail on a 2.8i Special. Timing difficult to adjust and the occasional misfire is probably due to the bearings on the distributor shaft being worn together with loose or worn advance weights. The bearings are simple bronze bushes and can wear quite quickly. The bottom bearing goes oval due to the side load and causes the rotor arm to rock. Not unknown for the rotor arm to gouge its way through the ends of the spark plug contacts in the distributor cap when the play gets excessive.

It will do skids and donuts lads it's a 2.8i special, LSD, looks a solid old car, deserves saving, engine needs work though, I'd bet the head gasket gone on no 1 bank, a bit tired too on the rest of cylinders, I don't recon it's done 60k more like 160k, the MOT record don't go back that far, rebuild the engine, rings shells gaskets you will be good, I thought head gasket because it seemed to be steaming more from the right exhaust than the left

Fitting a carb will reduce the engine power output. Drop the oil and try some 20/50 and see if it ups the pressure.

I did not see a fuel filter? Big flakes of rust can jam this type of vane impeller pump. You can try reversing the pump and backflush.

Put the thicker oil in, it won't do it any harm. Also check the clearances of the tappets, it did sound a bit tappet-y; if that's changed the valve timing, then that might be the cause of the hesitation / lack of power. These older vehicles are fully analogue / mechanical beasts and the engines are basically a thousand components that all need to run synchronously in order to be right. Keep going thorough systematically and eventually you'll run out of problems to fix... 🙂 The guy that goes banger racing would have to fit carbs as the regulations don't allow injected engines. By the very nature of banger racing, it's going to get smashed and an injected engine could spray fuel over a hot engine. I had an old Audi A4 that pretty much died and I looked into how I would go about giving it a Viking funeral so to speak by entering it into a banger race, and the work required to prep the car was huge! Maybe that could be a project for you guys - Matt will probably have a vehicle suitable for getting smashed up and there's a video to be made in prepping the car, plus the actual event as well.
@crimsonwolf04282 күн бұрын
I'd do a complete engine rebuild, replace all worn pieces with new, and replace the fuel injection with carb. Once you get used to old school mechanics, you'll wonder why you ever trusted sensors and these new fangled electronics. 😂

Is there idle mixture adjuster?
@mick_600619 сағат бұрын
I reckon that timing has to be wrong. that pre and post 1976 told me it isn't for a 2.8 as it didn't exist for another 5 years so that setting will be for a 3.0 carb unit. Just checked online and for a 2.8, Haynes reckon 12 BTDC but what I didn't see you doing was readjusting the idle which will rise as you advance the timing and go down as you retard it so you need to adjust the idle screw as well as the dizzy. Ignition too advanced will create more heat. As for oil grade, the best oil in the day I think was duckhams 20/50. Good luck!

Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system is bulletproof and to remove it for a carb is crazy. These engines are as basic as they come and ign should be timed to 12 deg btdc

As an oldie. If me. I'd strap it to a rolling road and screw the tits of it. Then decide to fix or st swap (wink). Either way your giving engine a chance to do what it's supposed to do. Sometimes they need a bit of rough to iron out to smooth. If engine fkd. Keep in corner with glass top whilst modern version takes the stress away. Happy days.....Or not... Memories of being towed at full pelt with head out window, trying to listen where problem was on car and long wire with side bulb attached was your multimeter fuse/wire fault detector lmao. All the best.

Not convinced you set the valve clearances on the compression stroke in the last video, that would explain the tapping, or the rocker assembly is just worn. if it suddenly spits out the header tank when booting it, thats the headgasket leaking, causing it to over pressurise, you could try torquing down the head bolts 90° I adore capri's! but the 2.8 engine's are junk
