You, sir, are a GODSEND! Very clear and concise instructions. I'm NOT a mechanic; and, I'm petrified at the thought of disassembling multiple parts on my car's engine, to accomplish a task. You saved me from that nightmare. And, I believe I will never forget you, because of your singular kindness, of producing this particular video. It's given me the courage to tackle a vexing problem, that, I did not have the understanding to explain; the way my car seem to be running less efficiently over time. I was getting dismissive responses from mechanics, suggesting that because my car was old ('95 Toyota Camry), I should be resolved to ACCEPT, that, my car should NOT be expected to run well again. Thank you for giving me hope, to remain in a car that I am happy to own.

This was a brilliant and very timely video for me. On my way home one night this week I discovered that my rpm was fluctuating between 1500 & 2500 every second. I had an important commercial inspection job the next morning and my '02 Toyota Highlander was filled with equipment I did not want to have to load into a rental. I found your video and got up the next morning at 5am, followed your instructions and got to work on time! But, wait -there's more! I have put 170,000 out of the 225,000 miles on this SUV and I have NEVER had this kind of MPG before. Two months earlier I noticed my MPG had dropped to 18.6 -I am now averaging 21.5 after only my first tank of gas since the IAC valve cleaning. I believe the valve has been sticking for years. When I started the ignition on the morning of the repair the idle was stuck at 3,000 rpm. This is the single most important and satisfying repair I have EVER made on ANY vehicle and I have you to thank for it. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and for doing it so clearly -YOU ARE THE MAN!!

You were TRIUMPHANT! Yeah, most people wouldn't know where to start. Hey, we all have talents and skills, but Automotive repair is grueling, dirty, painful, and not the most lucrative trade... All mechanics go through the trials and tribulations...torn skin, smashed fingers, purple fingernails, black specks on the pillow case, the aroma of petroleum products(greases, oils, cleaners, gasoline, smoke-electrical/plastic/paint.....combustion, sweat, etc. Oh yeah, I've been the cause of some fires...even burned a shirt a few times. Getting back to you... in our lifetime we have seen huge paradigm shifts in Automotive technology. Going from carbureted engines to fuel injection. That's just one example. ...just when you began to get a grip on venturis, accelerator pumps, emulsion tubes, transition circuits, chokes, ...they are made obsolete by fuel injection. Time to go back to school. Yeah, you succeeded. MAJORLY! (... you said that it idled smoother and mpg improved). I don't know yir skill level, REGARDLESS it's satisfying.

Figured there was a problem when the engine was stalling in the mornings when the engine was cold and I came to a stop. One morning the engine stalled and I couldn't get it restarted. Did a simple KZbin search on "'99 Camry Engine Stall Problem" and watched a video that talked about the same thing as this video but didn't remove the drain hose. This one came up next on autoplay and was more detailed. I removed the hose and worked in the carburetor cleaner as suggested (actually used throttle body cleaner). I didn't completely remove the throttle body as he did in detail but I did remove the drain hose underneath. Worked in the throttle body cleaner for about 5 minutes and drained the cleaner. Whole process took about 2 hours from start to finish and it worked like a charm on a $4 investment on the cleaner. Thanks for the tutorial!

Thanks for this! My first attempt at cleaning my throttle body and IACV on my 96 Honda Civic EX A/T didn't fix my high fast idle problem but gave more acceleration. Either I didn't clean it well enough because I didn't remove the coils and rotate the magnet back and forth fully, or I need to loosen the two screws and rotate the plate a bit CW to get the valve to close further at startup temp (the one calibrated at factory). One way or another, your video serves as a pep talk to ultimate success hopefully.

Followed your instructions for cleaning the IAC but only turned the valve controller back and forth for about a minute using throttle body cleaner instead of carb cleaner. You don't need to remove all the stuff you did to get this job done though. I only needed to loosen the backside clamp that connects the throttle body to the plastic intake tube from the air box and wiggle it to the side just enough ... then I unfastened the electrical plug to the IAC. Then I performed the cleaning like you have shown. This seemed to do the trick and my idle is much smoother especially when the A/C is on. Thanks for the tutorial ... the whole cleaning took me only 15 minutes from start to finish.

It might need the car computer gradually learn and collect enough data to get the 800 rpm at idle speed.

I also have a 97 Camry that has a similar problem: Engine stalls immediately when cold starting. It happened 3 times before and the dealers always charged me about $400 to replace IAC. I happens again now, but I refuse to take it to a dealer immediately. Instead, I searched the internet and realized that it seems to be a "unique" issue with Camry. Few websites suggest cleaning the IAC and show how to do it. But I found this Zero Garage to be the best: It not only tells you how to do it, it also explains clearly why.I did not flood the IAC as suggested. I just spread the cleaner few times while continuously turning the gate axis to loosing the gunk. It seems to work because now my problem is solved for $5.00! Thank you very much for doing such a great job educating me! By the way, I am not handy with cars. This was actually the first "major" repair of a car that I ever did. Wanted to say thanks. I wish I found your video a week earlier, as I already bought the new part, but even so, showing how to take the throttle body off, and that you don't have to drain the cooling system (as my shop manual suggests) means I might actually get this done this weekend. Thanks again!

thank you so much for the quick fix. I just did it to my gf's 2001 camry and it fixed the rough idle on cold start.

@wangruochuan8 жыл бұрын
Adam Reveles there is a outlet tube goes to crankcase at similar place. just pull it. you wont get wrong cuz its directly under the notch where you fill in the carbcleaner

A+ video.. love how you showed the idle air control valve and the gate inside. Going to be cleaning my IACV and gonna hold my finger under the hole.

I learned so much from this video. My 94 Lexus looks similar. I've had it for a little over a year. Had it tuned up etc at mechanic when I bought it but it started idling very low and speedometer would not work for a few miles when cold, and would keep giving me spark plug codes. I finally braved it and decided to clean throttle body and mass air flow sensor. Even though I did not have the time to really do it this time, and for fear of breaking another hose, at least I learned what that notch was for and cleaned it somewhat. Anyway, the throttle body was horribly filthy so I can imagine that air control valve thingy, and the air filter. The car runs 90% better and I will take that part off next time when I can have someone with another car just in case. It did give me a weird code that just would not come off, I think a PO773. After finally arriving home after 74 miles, I turned car off, took key out then put key back in and just turned it to on without cranking and left key in for almost a minute and took key out and restarted car and code came off and did not come off. Thank you so much. I am a woman and could not afford a mechanic at this time or most other times

I meant the code PO773 came off and did not come back on but I can't wait to really do it like you showed

And the mechanics, don't know which, must have broken the part of the air intake hose that is connected to it so I had to crazy glue it at least for now. And of course they didn't tell me because that is not a cheap part

It isn't harmful to use the carb cleaner in the IAC port in the TB opening. It evaporates rather quickly when used in short bursts. It also saves time from removing the IAC and hoses.

Thanks for the video. A mechanic quoted me $550 to replace the throttle body of my 2004 camry. Went and bought a throttle cleaner and fixed the problem, but aafter watching your video, l am keen to have a look at the control valve and see what's going on in there cos the start up is still a little bit rough. Subscribed!

It's criminal how they rape customers over "designed to fail" components like this. You wouldn't believe the venom spewed at me by "certified" Toyota mechanics for posting this video. Comical really.

Excellent information here, thanks for taking time to help out many. Only thing different I did was block the center nipple with a piece of rubber (inner tube) between my finger and the hole. Thus preventing carb cleaner from entering my bloodstream through skin pores. Thanks again!

Thank you for posting this very detailed video. I have a 96 camry that has problem with the idle, there are times when I start it even when the engine was warm, the idle, is only at 500 rpm, I have to rev the engine for a few seconds before the idle goes to normal reading which is 800 rpm to 900 rpm.

Excellent video. Clear, concise, I've learned a lot. And you easily saved me $100 or more, plus the hassle of running vehicles all over creation. Thanks! Now if I can figure out why the battery light is on, even though the alternator is putting out plenty of power and a new battery...

At 2:39 shouldn't there be a black o ring that seats against the circular area surrounding the magnet/shaft? Aside from that, I just used this same procedure on 2001 2nd gen avalon 1mz-fe, only difference was that the metal hose nipple that needs to be blocked is right underneath the spinning magnet, this nipple is angled and easy to access, I used a spare nitrile glove to block the nipple and then let the carb cleaner leak into the inside of the glove to dispose. p.s. as someone who loves learning about "why" and not just "how" to handle a procedure you have been one of the best explainers I have came across. Thanks for your time & insight sir!
