great videos sir ! my son bought an astro baas boat and got what he thought was a great deal until we took it out on the water the first time. after four years of sitting covered with a tarp the transom has rotted out . he was devastated understandably , I'm so glad I searched transom repair and found your videos and the seacast product . this looks like a good winter time project for us thanks again for taking the time to post this informative video

Hello and thanks for watching! I know these are a little long on time but I really wanted to show the whole job for everybody. Yea when you get an older boat on the cheap the transom is the second thing I would check after making sure the engine is running. Sorry for the delayed response i never got the email on this post as I normally get emails on posts. So how did it turn out? Did you guys get it fixed?

I would like to say thank you for taking the time and putting in all the effort to show this repair! Gained a lot of knowledge by watching, and probably save me some headaches....I have a 1989 Bayliner 1804 Fish and Ski that I will be doing the same thing to! Thanks again!

Hello! Thanks for watching! I just wanted to start a kind of forum for this type of boat. I just looked at some pics of an 1804 and that is a cool boat, I did not know Bayliner made a fish and ski type like that. That's cool! Thanks again.

That was an excellent job you did on this video and it really helped me in the project I have to do to my Bayliner Capri. I'm an aircraft mechanic and flight engineer and I would work with you anytime, anywhere!!!

Ron thank you for the compliment! I just got back from a weekend on this boat and it is still holding up after over a year. I have done a lot of tubing with the boat and it has held up well. One thing I would like to add is I should have clearcoated the Interlux paint because it does not stand up to oils and gasoline. Like I said this was a learning experience and these vids are a forum for these Bayliners. I saw three on the lake today! Thanks again!!

I watched this many times now I am preparing to do this on our 1976 marktwain trihaul ther instructions have changed a little with the cap process, question I have is did you replace the drain tube and how was that done and sealed thanks for the great video
@377Gman4 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for watching! The back end of this boat had two brass tubes that were the drain tubes. After I cleaned out the wood and sanded it all down inside I just put those brass tubes back in and I used 3M 4200 to hold them in place while I filled the transom up with the sea cast. I had to punch down the resin with a stick while avoiding the two brass tubes. And the resin just filled in around them. Good luck with it!
@377Gman4 жыл бұрын
Oh and if you were talking about the main drain tube in the bottom then that was fiberglassed in between the two skins. Between the inner body pan and the outer hull.

I hope you enjoyed the video! I still see this boat out in the lake so it’s still going strong. Seacast is awesome!

How many buckets did you use. And is your boat still operating well.
@377Gman Жыл бұрын
If I remember, right I used around three buckets. It took quite a bit to fill the stringer areas. So I sold the boat about three years ago and yes, it was still running great when I sold it. That transom held up very well. I’ve seen it on the lake since about a year ago so I know it’s still holding up. Thanks for watching.

Looks like it work out nicely. Have you tried skiing after it was done? Was it solid enough to do that?
@377Gman9 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Reynolds Hello, thanks for watching!. We don't ski ourselves but we do a lot of tubing so throughout last year it held up great. Yes I would ski on this type of redone transom as the Seacast really bonded with the the fiberglass. The only thing I did not do, after I talked to the techs down in Fla., was to "glass in" (encapsulate) any wood that will come into contact with the Seacast. On this transom I could not even see the ends of the stringers (because I dug them out far up) much less glass them in so keep that in mind if you ever use Seacast.

Thank you for this video series. Much appreciated and very helpful. Has the repair lasted six years? Thanks again! PS Do you think Carbon Core transom repair would be just as strong as the Seacast?
@377Gman3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for the kind words. I finally sold the boat last year and yes the repairs definitely held up. I have restored a few boats since then. I really like the use of composite core construction but it is super expensive. As far as a transom goes I really like the Seacast for older boats that originally had plywood in them. Especially when you have to go down into the stringers. Hey thanks for watching!
@gregmur81103 жыл бұрын
@@377Gman Thank you for your reply. I have a 1997 Bayliner which needs the same repair. From other videos I've seen, the Carbon Core product comes in a five gallon pail as does Seacast but the Carbon Core stuff seems to be more liquid and I was hoping it would fill the stringers and side supports. I don't know if I could get Seacast into the stingers like you did. You did a great job showing and explaining the process in the Bayliner. The video showed it perfectly. How many pails of the Seacast did you need to fill the stringers, stringer supports and transom?
@377Gman3 жыл бұрын
@@gregmur8110 If I remember right I went through three pails.

+Antonio Bennett Sr. Hey thanks! I bought 7 gallons if I remember right for around $300-$350. A little expensive but waaay cheaper than letting a shop do it or buying a new boat. I now have no leaks now and the transom is solid. Thanks again for watching!

Hello, sorry about the delayed response. I used about 7 gallons which then was approximately $350 if I remember right. I will say the transom is still going strong after 4 years. Thank you for watching.
@latitudemarine49758 жыл бұрын
The material they used to bond the cap and hull is probably more likely a material called polybond. A lot of manufacturers still use that bond method today. It looks an awful lot like bondo but It has more strength. And to all of the people upset about him using bondo, if he is sealing it with marine paint, its really not that much of an issue. I mean there are better fillers out there but believe it or not bondo will work just fine.
@377Gman8 жыл бұрын
Hello Caleb Thank you for watching and commenting! Yea I thought all it did was seal the cap onto the transom and I thought it really had no structural integrity. The folded fiberglass mat in the upper part of the Seacast I thought would take the brunt of the pressure. I have sealed it with marine grade paint. I will say that 1 1/2 seasons later it is holding perfectly so far and we have ran the heck out of it. Thanks again
@latitudemarine49758 жыл бұрын
no problem glad to hear its held up. I would like to try the seacast method on my boat sometime. My transom is just about shot.

Bondo keeps matching our color. It can't hold a candle to our results. Thanks

With all due respect and thanks for the video...PLEASE NEVER use Bondo with Seacast™. Use only No Wax Polyester resin as instructed in the manual to seal the cap. Seacast™ is MUCH stronger than any other material on the market. We offer Free Tech Support for every customer.
@377Gman8 жыл бұрын
+SabineCorinna unger Hello Miss Unger, thank you for commenting! I only used the fiberglass resin to 'cement' the original cap on as I thought it had no structural rigidity to it. That is what was used originally on my transom cap. By all means use what the manufacturer says in their directions. Thank you for pointing out this important piece of information. That is why I did these vids, to have a forum on how to do this type of repair. Seacast does have the greatest customer service as I had called them a few times and they helped me all the way through to the end. Thank you again!

You have done some more research....Bondo is a no-no or marine uses!!
@377Gman8 жыл бұрын
Hello thanks for watching. I agree Bondo is a no-no. Only use polyester resin to seal the cap. I wonder why the original cap and top of the boat is sealed together with Bondo as it clearly looks like fiberglass resin. Weird.
