The different tattoos that you mentioned i.e. 'Apache' 'Centipede' 'Swallows' etc. all signify different gang affiliations, in the olden days. Those guys took reference from the Traditional Tattoos of American Sailors who dock in SG. These are often crossed out to signify non-affiliation to the particular group anymore (so they won't be taken in by the SSB). The four words on the back of the Chinese Guys are usually Chinese Idioms relating to life, family, parents etc. Non-Chinese 'Gangsters' (Malays, Indians, Eurasians) up till the 90s, early 2000s, also have them.
