3800 Series II exploding intake fix/upgrade

I just did the swap with the ZZP adapter and the Amazon LS evap sensor delete port on it, & once I got it back together and hit the key with that top port plugged I had crazy amount of vaccum, & the car made a loud screening noise. When I’d open the oil cap the noise would stop. Routed the line to the line I extended for the line off of the throttle body for the purge valve and still made the noise. I’ll probably just put a breather on it or put a hold going to the air filter box, & that’s it or having a little breather. I’m rly glad I got rid of the plastic intake. It looks to have started to pass coolant, & I’m glad I caught it before it blew up. I just did the upper intake for now, & I’ll do the lower intake soon. The lower intake involves an oil change, & something I didn’t quite want to mess with this weekend. I have all the part just not a fight for today. It’s better off than before with the plastic intake that explodes, so one less thing to worry about. Costed me $400 in parts and subtracting the $200 tow bill I would’ve gotten if it blew up it’s like a $200 job. I couldn’t believe how nasty the intakes on these engines can get. No wonder the plastic ones fail. Oil soaked, & gets hot. The car is now a Series 3. Replaced the PCV sensor cleaned the intake, so far it runs like a top. Torqued the intake to 8ftlbs, & that’s it. Reinstalled the injectors, & a few other small connections.

U can also get an cast aliminium intake from an Australian 3800. Also check your pcv valves not blocked.

had it happen on our lesabre. January 2020, replaced with a dorman intake manifold, and replaced the fuel pressure regulator with a acdelco. havent had a issue since. fuel pressure regulator starts to leak, loads the intake manifold with fuel vapors/fuel and blows up on startup. haven't seen a crankshaft position sensor cause this issue.

For my vehicle it was the problem also the problem on a Buick I worked on as of now both cars have the OEM fuel pressure regulators

Had the same happen recently to my 2001. Going to change the pressure regulator and hope that is what caused it so it won’t happen again.

I was just at my junkyard, the open inlet you're talking about on the metal intake,has a elbow hose and runs a short tube to the the rubber boot air duct about the the same place as the air inlet sensor,so you probably can just drill a different hole in the rubber air duct next to that sensor

Months later I found out about this and constant drilling the hole through putting a fitting in but car runs perfect without it Kinda not worth the hassle you know

Yes the GEN 3 metal intake bolts right up to the GEN 2 all you need is that adapter plate for your throttlebody unless you swap out your throttlebody

Check your battery also, I saw someone else have the same issue an he replaced his battery and intake, he mechanic said the weak battery cause enough crank until the compression stroke, engine spin backwards as he let off the key and his intake popped. All he replaced was intake and battery and he's still driving

So, from the factory the series 3 aluminum intskes had a drive by wire throttle body. The series 2 with the plastic intakes had a regular cavle driven throttle body. My question is do the 2 throttle bodys bolt up the same or did you need a special plate to make the cable driven series 2 throttle body fit the series 3 aluminimum intake. Asking for myself just bought a 02 Bonneville and i know this is a common problem just wondering if this could be a potential perma-fix? Thanks. Nice build to man. You answered my question lol. It was the newer body style I believe this intake came off of a 07

@@AtlasL36 you can buy new connectors for the sensors that are on the throttle body it should make the wires longer so you have more slack.

A Backfire is the cause-lean or missfire-I have never seen a 3800 intake explode.

Same here , I love it. I actually just had to replace the plenum last week and I also changed the fuel pressure regulator. I have to do some work on my rusty strut towers this summer or move to different car. I got it in 06 with 88k (350k now) and enjoyed it so much I haven't given much thought to upgrading to newer car.

Car almost has 140 on the dash now and still running strong just did the lower intake gasket upper intake gasket and elbows a few weeks back I had a small external coolant leak on the passenger side and figured why not

@@nickm455 my strut towers are also rusty I thought about finding a donor car and changing everything over i’ve given some of these newer cars like yourself but none of them catch my eye I love theses impalas

@@AtlasL36 I think that would be a good idea. You can find them for not a lot of money I would expect. I was going to get some pieces of sheet metal and weld or rivet them in but maybe cutting the towers out of a different one would be better.
