The concept of it is actually not a bad idea, I just couldn't understand why a new currency needed to be created (well I see now why) but you could argue that there could be a ligitimate case for rewarding gateway operators somehow.
@canwenot5733 жыл бұрын
You certainly could argue that, and blockchain/crypto makes a good medium to do that. However, the execution in this case pretty clearly resembles a ponzi scheme. Given, as he said in the video, how little the network as a whole was able to make from data transport and how they no longer allow people to build their own gateways(hotspots). I do agree that the concept is solid, especially as big data, cloud/edge computing and machine learning become more mature. There will likely be a number of applications for LoRa in these fields, and that inevitably means that someone is going to be paid to build/maintain LoRa infrastructure. Somehow, some way, there will be something of value exchanged for those services.
@miroslavbazitov1833 жыл бұрын
Interesting discussion, I also think it is more like a ponzu scheme, but only because of the low usage of the network. I get that the authorised devices could have much to do with the security concerns, but this limited supply sounds fishy if the hardware is almost entirely off the shelf. They have also announced a 5G hot spot - only for the US, but that sounds likely to be heavily regulated. (I wouldn’t be happy if my neighbour points whatever antenna my way). It should also be mentioned that their investors own 30% of the tokens, it will be quite indicative if they offload etc. Otherwise even if it is a scheme at least it doesn’t burn KW :) and you are part of a global telecom for “just” $400
@AndreasSpiess3 жыл бұрын
@kekagiso: You are right. As I mentioned in the video. The idea was not bad for the capitalistic world we are. But now it seems it is out of their hands as Can we not wrote. 5G is heavy licensed (governments charge billions for licenses). So I cannot imagine it can be used the same way. This is a different animal than ISM.

Even with 5G I still struggle to see how this can be any different...if the hotspots become cheap enough surely a service like The Things can provide the same level of coverage either for free or a minimal cost, what would be the need for a blockchain? Do I really want to hook up my 5g phone to a blockchain network that chews through my battery? Monthly data plans are already cheap for consumers, what extra benefit would I get from participating in Helium aside from the promise of wealth generated through a ponzi scheme?!
@mt-qc2qh3 жыл бұрын
I use the LoRa radios for my home projects, with my own private gateways, based on your past videos. They certainly outperform the nrf24 and nrf905 radios and use the Radiohead libraries. When I first saw the Helium "Peoples Network", I immediately thought about the data transfer and who the hell would ever use such a network. If you're tracking grocery carts or even water meter readings using LoRa, as a company you would implement your own gateways. The "crowd funded" approach is indeed a ponzi scheme and all the hardware vendors are making a killing on the vapor hype. Some are hitting $650 for the hotspots. What a gimmick. I appreciate your affirmation of this point! Thanks.

I think it's a necessary phase of a mesh network - sort-of Ponzi scheme phase. It's when the network is not yet big/viable enough to attract real users, but you have to somehow incentivize network growth. Here it seems it's done with introducing yet another cryptocurrency with a PoW of keeping a LoRa node. Now, if it won't collapse during this phase it could enter a phase when it's known enough to facilitate real users who willing to pay, and nodes start to earn money by serving users instead just existing.
@AndreasSpiess2 жыл бұрын
I agree. My point is different: We have LoRa networks all over the place (for the last 5 years). But the number of use cases is small because this technology only covers a niche. So even with the best infrastructure: It will not produce the amount of money. But maybe I am wrong

@@AndreasSpiess For your information: The Things Network maps currently shows TWO hotspots in the entire huge state of Nevada, in the USA. The closest one is nearly two hundred miles from where I live (both are in Reno, Nevada). The Helium map shows hundreds of Helium hotspots in Reno alone, as of April, 2022. While I support both purely volunteer and commercial efforts in the realm of LoRaWAN, it appears that at least in the case of Nevada, "The Market has Decided". As to the long-term results, financially, of the Helium network, that's a WHOLE other question. I hope that if and when Helium collapses, the millions of newly "orphaned" hotspots out there will be readily convertible to private or other commercial use, and don't become e-waste.

I did eventually decide it was a Ponzi scheme and thought I would be able to get something out of it, but am far less sure now especially with the halving coming up soon. In the meantime I just bought another LoRaWAN gateway and got it all set up and running with months to spare and am noticing that it is getting clogged from all of the Helium POC packets in my area.
@AndreasSpiess3 жыл бұрын
I assume this network will use a lot of capacity of the ISM bands in crowded areas. A viewer even suggested, the FCC could investigate in this use case. That would be interesting...
@samreciter3 жыл бұрын
That's the thing with those network ideas - it's the questionable use-case. Right now there is just not much LoRa use. But on the other hand - with a good functioning network - it might get more. And despite what you said in your video - that they had to pay 20k $ for PoC - they actually had to pay none - as they created their own currency (HNT) for 0$ and are paying their PoC with it. The value given to the currency is just speculation on the crypto market. It's questionable as it might go nowhere - but speculative - it could become the network with the most coverage & LoRaWAN could become the technology for IoT - then it might become a viable business. It's a game of chance and speculation - not necessarly a ponzi sheme.
@AndreasSpiess3 жыл бұрын
We will see. 500 dollars turnover for a global network after a few years of operation does not make you think? Is the market demand really so big? Big companies like Deutsche Bahn build their own network because it is quite cheap for the places they need.
@samreciter3 жыл бұрын
@@AndreasSpiess I totally agree - it's obvious that the demand is not there (yet). And i assume they even use their own stock of HNT to pay for their bills. Although they sure get some kickback from the Helium hardware too. I would not invest in it myself - at least not long term - as i see the chance as very low. But it's how alot of those new companies work - completely investing in a possible future with f# high risk - trying to be the first of something. I agree with your assesment of the company - but it's hard to tell if they really believe in themselves or really just putting up for the ponzi sheme =)

Interesting video, but be conscient that if you want to build you own hotspot with the listed materials, you won't get any HNT anymore. If you plan to buy an official gateway, make sure you have checked that the distribution of HNT will change overtime. In the futur you will get less for the Proof of coverage and more for the data transfert. As mentioned in the video, the network is not carry much data at the moment ... The simple way to get rich with helium, is probably to buy HNT and hoping the value will get higher. By the way, the token generation will be halving on the 1. August 2021 (may be a sign, because it's the day of the swiss national day !)

@dd03563 жыл бұрын
My guess is those young people have already "migrated" to US/CANADA/Australia/Germany and other places ;-) The reason i see is, older LoRa chips required clock generation from the "mother" (or father) chips which means a loose wire renders it useless. 8-channel Gateways were costlier than i would like to spend. In bigger cities and towns, there are big concrete/buildings. Besides there was a huge confusion regarding frequencies. By the time one figured out all these, one got confused why he (or she) did this. If the whole point was to transfer data from long distance location to the internet, i would rather use arduino (stm32)+nrf-->nrf+esp8266 or a GSM chip costlier but works universally, although power hungry. A few projects i had in my mind 3 years ago before i abandoned it due to lack of time (and more importantly energy) was to log my solar panel V,I,W and load V,I,W and pf so that i could optimise the system..Another one was water tank monitor on my rooftop and display it on my mother's phone. Besides, i have done some test using the ttgo t-beam. Idea was to log my GPS co-ordinates of my bicycle (and walking) to TTN. But maybe my setup was wrong, it did not send anything beyond 500m.. For the same application, since i had t-beam, i would store gps data on the sd card and later download the csv file when it comes to my home wifi or send all data automatically to firebase or a local database. If we have lockdown for a few more weeks, maybe i can try on these abandoned projects again..

I believe mining using “proof of coverage” is an interesting innovation in the crypto space. The fact that this mining algorithm is less energy intensive compared to something like “proof of work” while essentially performing the same task and also creating a usable network is something I like personally. It’s also nice to mention that Helium is expanding to 5G which could fix some of the lack of data transferred. On the other side, from an telecom business standpoint, the data transfer numbers at this point in time indeed look terrible… In the helium community it is often argued that it is only attractive for businesses to use the network when coverage is more consistent (so when more hotspots are deployed). But then again the data transfer would need to increase several magnitudes in order to pay out something significant to the owners, not looking good.

@@AndreasSpiess On a technical note, and apart from the dubious commercialisation of the ISM band - If the majority of the traffic is POC, does that have an impact on available bandwidth for "normal" LORA gateways and the network as a whole? I mean a standard LORA gateway could be forwarding Helium traffic at the owner's expense and against the altruistic mission of the system.
@AndreasSpiess3 жыл бұрын
All LoRaWAN gateways will receive and decode all traffic if they use the same frequencies. They just will not forward them (I do not know of roaming between the two networks). I did not check the frequencies of TTN and Helium. Maybe they are different. and there is no "congestion".
@squelchstuff3 жыл бұрын
@@AndreasSpiess Interesting, and thanks for the replies and your time. I've done some cursory reading on Helium [1], and it does appear that a Helium node handles all LoRaWAN packets as a bonus to the whole LoRa network except that Helium specific packets are marked and secured for participants in Helium only. However, my concern was that the converse is also true, and a standard LoRa node will still receive the anonymised traffic and possibly forward it. Afterall, the Helium layer seems to ride on top of LoRa where only equipment with the enabled protocol and appropriate decryption keys are used. Given the low data rate of LoRa as a whole (by design) any increased handshaking over the Helium layer could have an impact on the ability (in the time domain) of "standard" sensor traffic. I need to do more reading to fully understand if any of this is true, but my naive understanding so far seems to indicate it might be. Have you ever considered looking into DASH7? I'm sure your insights would be of interest to the community. [1]Source: docs.helium.com/lorawan-on-helium/

I did the due diligence myself. Notice these stations that do the POC are from the US. I live in Somerset so I looked at a local hotspot which was earning probably less than the interest you would get if you put the $400 into a savings account. I notice also that a kind of generic system behaviour was that lets say you have a medium town and you have a few hotspots working in that town, then one will be earning about 5 HNT and the others about 0.01. I checked details like power output, antenna location and so on but found no influencing factor here. Yes indeed, I got a strong whiff of that Ponzi chap. We come to similar conclusions. By the way, you could at the time I was looking, manage to build your own. You need a crypto key to operate and in order to get that you have to hand over a large five figure sum for some stringent approval process. I guess you could say suspicion is raised somewhat by the amount this get-rich-quick scheme is promoted without downsides on a million KZbin channels. It saddens me. Wow. This video is so severely missing the point that I suspect it is intentionally misleading. The Helium Network is in the building phase at the moment. Low data traffic at the moment is no indication for the future success of the network. Of course building the Helium Network can turn out to be a failed business activity. But success or failure does not depend on data traffic today, but on future data traffic, which is expected to grow enormously. This expectation can turn out to be wrong. But not even taking this in account is like looking at a housing complex in the process of being built and saying "How can they pay the workers who are building the houses so much money at the moment, when they have no one who is paying rent?"
@AndreasSpiess3 жыл бұрын
We will see in two years. LoRaWAN technology is 5 years old and many successful nets already exist. Nobody waited for Helium with its coverage mainly in large cities (which is probably the reason for the lack of data traffic a few years after its founding). But maybe I am wrong.

@@AndreasSpiess Well, we can see right now that your analysis is missing a very important part. When assessing a business model, one can have different expectations what those aspects of the future will be like that are relevant to the business. One can give reasons for those expectations. One can be right about it or one can err. In part or completely. But you just completely ignore that part. A part that is relevant for the analysis of every business model, but even more so in the case of the Helium network, which has a clearly defined long-term strategy. Where is the part in your video where you even try to estimate the long-term (2 years, 5 years, 10 years, e.g.) growth of LoRa use cases, of data traffic and of the percentage of that traffic that might be using the Helium network? HNT is not Bitcoin and we should be clearer with that part of the transactions. One problem for me is that it is another silio network and I wish for less interference and that we could have sensor edge nodes run across multiple networks. Also it doesn't sound a very accessible network either as there is little incentive in this model to connect rural or users lacking resources. Blockchain offers a huge potential to help even the biggest rivals cooperate in the same network but then also sadly as well it looks like it can equally be used to take the trust away that users have with other vendors or even with other users in their communities of application!

I agree: Blockchain is a wonderful tool if competitors have to work together. Probably the only working. But here we are talking about a homogeneous network. No competition problem to solve. The reward could be shared with a simple database. If anything would be here to share.

Can you do an updated video on a DIY lower Gateway

What is a Lower Gateway?

Take one big note, the more Hotspots are online, the more the rewards per day have to be divided among all owners. HNT supply is limited and the percentage of rewards also goes down over time. Also in August a halving is going to happen ... HS counter is now on 48.4K en the deployment count is going parabolic ... rewards per Hotspot decrease around at this moment with 1.5%. So today you make 10 ... tomorrow 9.85 .. or a little less depending on the rate of deployments. Also a majority of Hotspots is not owned by a person, but a big distributor of devices with the name Emrit. You place one Hotspot at your home, it will mine for you ... but 80% of the rewards go to Emrit .. so more and more it indeed begins to look like a ponzy scheme .. so watch out the guys at the top (Emrit) is harvesting almost 80% rewards with over 27K of Hotspots ... maybe Emrit is owned by the Helium organisation itself? .. makes you think

BTW search for "HIP 20: HNT Max Supply", here is the whole rewards schedule printed out

I do not think too much about Helium. I made this video to warn my subscribers and that's it...

Yes the halving is gonna happen, but the halving will effect the price of Helium, it will go up maybe double or even more, that's just basic tokenomics, Bitcoin is so valuable because of this halving and limited supply. So its not a bad thing. And the HNT will not be divided amongst every Hotspot user, only those ones who really are witnessing and are creating more coverage are going to earn good amounts of HNT, Hotspots in cities with plenty of miners won't make that much, the Hotspots needs to be optimal placed.

I don't know about geting rich instaling hotspots. But yes, you can became a rich person buying HNT at Binance or another one. I believe Helium is the next rocket of the crypto market.

Look at many other cryptos. There is a big fluctuation. For the moment, HNT lost much more than Ethereum or bitcoin...

4:06 „Only in areas without 4G coverage“ Isn‘t there full 4G coverage in Swiss?
@AndreasSpiess3 жыл бұрын
In Switzerland: Yes. But on a global basis for sure no. Particularly where big agriculture takes place. This is why LoRa is often used there.
