What an iconic badge to have the honor of making. This full 3D carving was made from solid 8/4 Black Walnut with color contrast. Finished with a matte Odies for a classic look.
I try to post new videos as time permits. I often make repeat projects so I don't want to post repeat end products. New projects coming soon and are in the works.
Have a questions about how I do things, just ask and I'll do my best to answer.

The LAPD badge is one of my favorite works of art for many years. This is incredible work and no surprise that Jay would be the one to produce this beautiful piece. I have wanted to do it for years. Great work Jay. Your videos occupy too much of my time but they are just that good. Thanks

Where did you get the original artwork from, a real badge? Or, did you freestyle all of that?

This design took almost 5 months in Zbrush. There are models out there for sale but I found those to be poor detail. I'd recommend looking at etsy.

Awesome work, I really like watching your videos. I am new to CNC routing and currently run a Laguna Swift. I have a quick question on the badge, did you have to manually trace a pic of the badge in Vectric or is there a way to trace it and get all of the vectrics out? I noticed yours has really good detail.
@bateswoodworking

This design took me almost 3 months to complete. Started with a LAPD png image and traced each vector out and then modeled each vector individually in Zbrush.

I am looking for something like this 3d modelled design (not the carving), but as a AUS Queensland Police Badge. The LAPD one is just an impressive badge though. Would love to have the model of that and see how it would work 3d printed in wood filament. (Not sure it would work but I dont have the skill or machines used here).

Amazing work. So, you used 2" thick material. Did you just use 4 bits (1/4" BN, 1/16"TBN, 45dVbit & 60dVbit)? Do they have to be specialty extra long bits to reach the 2" depth, so the collet doesn't hit the taller sections and sides? I want to do deeper carvings but I'm very new to CNC - so I'm nervous to attempt deep carving. Should the bit length be at least as deep as the stock, or is that not necessary? Most regular cutters only cut 1/2" to an inch.
@bateswoodworking
@bateswoodworking 11 ай бұрын
Hi. Yes this size needed to be 8/4 to get the detail in the model I wanted. This carve had the 4 bits you asked and just a 1/4" endmill for the profile. Hey good question on the cutting length. I use the RIP precision tools bit#TBN-06220F3. It has a full 2" tapered cutting length and is a phenomenal bit. Yes it's recommended a 2" cut or you'll just burn the edges as the non cutting sides rub the wood. Hope this helps

Can you tell me what white paint and spray were used for the engraved letters?
@bateswoodworking
@bateswoodworking 5 ай бұрын
The white was water based clear coat used as a sealer so the blue paint doesnt run. The pain is a spray enamel. Enamel great for use with the Odies Oil and Wax finishes. For spray gloss eurethane finishes I prefer using primer or flat paint.

Did you do the CAD and toolpaths work, or did you get the file from some other source? I've just started making 3D effects with Vectric VCarve Pro and appreciate the work that goes into this piece. Great video BTW... but I'd suggest you tone down the cheesy intro.

I have an idea if you have not tried it yet.. For the parts that are more detailed.. Go ahead and CNC the shapes.. but use a laser to do the engraving.. like the smaller parts that might chip or get tear out. ;-) ??
@bateswoodworking
@bateswoodworking 2 ай бұрын
Yes you are correct, Many times we will incorporate our laser to enhance the more detailed tiny spots, such as bricks and windows. We can manage clean carves on very small areas though using the appropriate settings and bit. We find the Amana 45611 is a great bit for these areas.
