I love 3D Coat and I am thrilled to see you dipping your toe in even if it is somewhat cursory. I would love to see you continue covering its use in tandem with Blender either in paid courses or on KZbin. Hope you like it!
Professor Abbitt is the perfect match for 3D Coat. For a very long time, a lot of 3D Coat's features and workflows have been lacking thorough explanations. There are many videos in YT but most of them are quite dated and not fully organized (despite this has been slowly improving). His teaching style and visibility would bring 3D Coat to a much larger user base. I have been using both Blender and 3D Coat for quite some time and I can tell you they are BFFs for sure. You can setup a complete game asset pipeline with these 2. The best part is that both tools are multifunctional which allows for very particular complimentary workflows, tailored as much as you like (apparently 3D Coat will be introducing Parasolid kernel, so CAD to mesh modelling like Plasticity, would also be possible). I have learned so much in the courses by Prof. Abbitt that I am certain that if he did a 3D Coat course it would be immensely beneficial for the 3D community, as he could present this software's many capabilities(and limitations) the way only he can. Also, 3D Coat has a perpetual license and a rent-to-own model, on top of having a non expiring "learning" mode, with some exporting limitations but it's still the full program, so you can really get to know it and try it out and see for yourself if it clicks. Oh, and Im not getting paid to promote this or anything, it's just I'm fond of 3D Coat as I learned the 3D pipeline thanks to it and I am a thankful student of Prof. Abbitt, convinced he could really do it justice. ;)
@pieralessi7426Ай бұрын
@@salomon_gutierrez I agree with you, not only does it have poor learning support but it is also difficult to use intuitively, you can't tell if it's a bug or you made a mistake. I bought the 2022 and I was in a Discord group and although they intended to help I realized that they limit themselves to sculpting and texturing, completely ignoring modeling and drawing tools, the tools are not contextualized with the rooms, by demanding better attention I came across a group of sensitive people who each claimed to be collaborators with their own voice as if it were free software and while one "solved your doubt" another told you to give you back your money (which gave me doubts because they are not the owners).

3D Coat does a great job of patching up some weaknesses of Blender (retopo, UV mapping, texture painting, etc.) but it's just about the buggiest piece of software I've ever used. I bought v4 way back in 2017 and it's only seen minor improvements in stability in that time, and for a period between 2020-2022 was so unstable as to be borderline unusable. The interface also has many quirks and constantly gets in the way, nothing feels quite "right" with the UI. Love to see this software get more attention but the devs are adding features feverishly while the instability and jankiness never seems to get resolved. In some cases I've had to move my work over to other apps to work around the bugs.

In my opinion, 3d coat is the king of texture drawing (including making displacement maps, much better than ZB). UV unwrapping and retopo is also great if not the best. Scupting however, somehow I could not include it in my workflow. First, it is not very convenient to make shapekeys (morphs) as blender or Zbrush. Also, it's hard for me to smooth somehow, although it does have a lot of smoothing tools (smooth, tangent smooth, power smooth etc), but to me, still not comparable to Zbrush (especially the mask and polish by feature function) in smoothing, which is very important in sculpting..

What?? 3dcoat supports blender import? This is major game changer? Seeing this, I am really angry at myself I bought Steam Painter, this looks impressive and really powerful (thankfully I got Painter before price increase so... at least something). :D I was thinking about buying 3dCoat not so long time ago mainly for its retopology tools and to replace Blender sculpting. Personally, I find too clunky to my liking when dealing with precise details like ornaments or carvings, and more importantly, it is sometimes lagging even with relatively low polycount when using Dyntopo, or act weird whenI try to increase polygon density for detailed sculpting. 3dCoat, on the other hand, is supposed to be really as intuitive and "artistic" as it looks thanks to voxels - simple sculpting without any technical issues typical for polygon sculpting like mesh distortion, stretching, dyntopo/remesh/multires questions, flow, overly dense base mesh, tearing up... Are you planning to record more detailed review of 3DC, focused mainly on its sculpting capabilities and Blender-3DC compatibility? To be honest, I don't really understand voxels. I know they are 3d pixels, points (cubes) with values on 3d grid, easy to be shaped or destroyed without any concern about topology, allowing to merge objects without any issues etc etc. I know the theory but cannot translate it into practice. (just rhetorical questions) What is the actual relationship between polys and voxels? How the converting works and what is happening behind the veil and what issues or constraints should I expect? Or what to do to prevent them? (I hope applink solves this - or does it? Can the applink transfer and convert whole mesh or does it work only for uv, painting and materials?) And if it is really able to convert them seamlessly, is it possible to return the model back to former software to make additional changes? Speaking of it, how serious deformation should be expected after conversion one way or another? Is polygon based Blender able to keep fine detailing of original voxel model, or how serious the distortion or even destruction is about to be expected? Is it even possible to use voxel model as high poly for baking outside 3dCoat eg. in Substance Painter? A lot was said about 3dC's texturing abilities. And voxel sculpting is praised for being the best for concept art but otherwise, there are so many questions about sculpting and its possibilities, various production workflows, and now this new love with Blender, still left unanswered.

Heh.. Our minds think alike. I recently I saw a video from ZugZug - he does Blender + 3D coat videos and I thought it might be good for texture painting, but the program seemed a bit advanced. I'm happy to see you are getting into this, so I can learn along the way. Question: Have you tried actually just painting with colors in 3D cloat? Not smart materials, just the usual "Multiply" and "Screen" workflow from Blender painting. I learned painting like that, so if that can also be done in 3D coat, I might get it myself.

Yes because of the layers and masks it is really nice along with custom brushes

Surely it is very good, but in the industry or studios they do not ask for it, and that is what saddens me, that in the end we have to use the software they ask of us, and not the ones we like.

3D Coat is widely used in the industry among Concept Artists, Blizzard Texture Painters, and more. There are people at Dekegon studios using 3D Coat for asset production. The higher your skill, the less people care about what exact tools you use as long as you can deliver the format.

The thing is, they are religious fanatics that don’t want you to do anything remotely nsfw with it.

That is not true; there are no limitations on NSFW or the content. There was a short story at the very beginning about some censorship, but I stopped it. I will never allow any censorship in 3DCoat. Really, part of the team are religious people, but I am not, and I am for freedom of creation.

@@AndrewShpagin_IntegralAndrew, you are amazing and have no need to defend yourself. 3D Coat is one of the best 3D tools ever created. Does not matter what religion some of the coders behind it have. If commenter would have first looked around the inet and see the vastly diverse work done with 3D Coat, from cute to horror, this comment would not have been nevessary.

I just checked out 3D Coat Textura and it's absolutely awful compared to Substance Painter, even the older versions.

I think it's not really a comparison and more for texture painting as I understand

@@grabbitt it can do pbr fine you just have to learn a diff interface thats all. sp has a very specific evolved interface. coat is a little less evolved but all features are there.

I understand that not all good tools are free and appreciate the value of Blender being open-source. However, it's disappointing to see a sudden shift in focus to a different software. It feels like the genuine passion for Blender is being overshadowed by monetary incentives.

Used with blender it's a great tool. Most blender users especially those that do any hand painted items know how limited the software is in this department. I love blender but sometimes you have to consider the speed of producing projects and it's actually cost effective to pay for the tools you need at times

Unfortunately this software is an eternal beta even alpha in some area, i use it only for 3d painting and destruction sculpting. Scaling issues is horrendous the software never react the same way each time you use it. There is close to no good tutorials and the guy doing the video is beyond boring. Their forum is almost dead with only a few old timer who are of no use when you ask a question. Also be careful how you ask a question since they will ignore you if they don't like you for whatever reasons.
@harrysanders81814 күн бұрын
It is as solid a piece of software as any other. It behaves exactly the same each time if you know what you are doing. It has a ScalerMaster built in which lets you adapt scale to any size, the default is just x100, or /100, like with most other apps it translates that way (try handling scale in ZBrush and you will be up for a surprise). Tops: it has rock solid measurement tools, which are much more advanced and usable than Blenders basic one.
