Hey Troy, you're really close to success here, please don't give up! Observing how the bird behaves shows it has insufficient yaw stability - its always yawing to the left under the influence of the EDF unit's torque. This is likely relatively easy to fix - possible solutions include (i) add a transparent extensions to the vertical surfaces using thin clear plastic sheet; (ii) make up some seagull feet and add them to the model, positioning them so that they add vertical area as far back as possible, (iii) make a new, longer tail, or better (iv) reposition the existing tail at a greater distance behind the seagull body (could make up an extension piece to achieve this). Option (i) would be very easy to implement. Moving the balance point slightly further forward will assist marginally in increasing yaw stability. Hope this helps :-)

Hey Troy we have built 4 of these and 3 of the 4 are flying well. We had to use the FMS 50mm fan and mods because we could not get the 40mm EDFs. I just don't think the 40mm EDF has enough thrust for this design. Here is a link to one of the flights on my seagull: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKSZi32PfsiDY6c

Lovely build. More power Scotty! She can-ne take it captain, she can-ne take it. Better fan or motor is required, as that thing needs about 20% more thrust I’d say. See the Grumpy Modellers KZbin channel. He does a lot of ducted fan jets.

You need to mix it on you RC pad like a flying wings drive type. Cause it dosent have elevator. May be you need to fix the gate, it dose nt needable to fly with this aircraft. Amazing art and hand work!

You might consider split ailerons. This way you can get both roll, pitch and yaw control from the wings alone. You might still mix in rudder too.
@28th_St_Air2 жыл бұрын
Heck, Skip the EDF, cover the air inputs to reduce drag, and try to slope soar it instead. It might need 10+mph to work but the realism of gliding it silently would be very satisfying.

I haven't flown EDFs yet myself but from my conversations with locals who do...EDFs need a bit of head wind to get air borne So you probably need more wind to launch...typically I see them launching in at least a 15mph head wind or more.

Looks so nice, but appears to on heavy side, or lacking in power as never really climbed. Heard you state was 610g with battery. Looking at PlanePrint, they state should be ~560g. It may be worth some effort to do a thrust test on the EDF, as the bird also didn't seem to pick up much speed. I've seen other videos where it climbs at 15-20º angle from launch. I'm not familiar with EDFs, but appears to be some variation in thrust producing ability.

Hello, I am going to mount a seagull and I see that you mount an Emax servo on the tail. I really like these servos. Can you tell me their reference so that they fit on the tail and also for the ailerons. the EDF Turbine is the d 40 mm? Thank you very much for your video
@ashleywhitehead37102 жыл бұрын
Shame it didn't fly, looks awesome. EDF are cool but only really function well at higher airspeeds as they accelerate air to higher speeds and thus produce thrust at higher airspeeds allowing higher airspeeds to be achieved. This however comes at the expense of air volume. A prop is many times more efficient for the airspeed this model would operate at judging by its design. They also really need well designed ducting to work efficiently. The ducting design on that model is very bad. The model seems to have poor yaw stability as well. It seems to have been designed around how it looks rather than any aerodynamic functionality.

Hi Troy, Awsome video by the way. We are here in England UK. My mate made one. They do look great when decorated like your one. I helped him iaunch it . Very much the same result that you got. It just didn't seem to have enough power for just a hand launch. It flew but he couldn't steer it. Then it stalled and nose dived into the worst place posible ( a farmers tarmac track). Breaking it into small peices. (Dow!) He also printed me a slope soaring version. I hope my slope soaring one fly's better. Did you ever get your ducted fan one to fly correctly? My mate has reprinted his to try again. But any tips you can pass on will be more than helpfull. We know the center of gravity is critical. Plus you need speed of air over the wings with ducted fan's to have any effect on the flying surfaces. Unlike a prop-on -the -front model that generates it's own wind. We are thinking like you of throwing it from a slope or maybe a bungy lauch may work? Also what static thrust was coming from yours? And what amps watts etc? I think this is more about animatronics than aeromodelling. Happy landings anyway from Phill W (wiggles)

How many times do you have to crash it going left every time??? Didn't you recognise it needed some right yaw trim??...It barely has enough power but once it's trimmed it should be enough....I'm guessing you were trying to use the elevons all the time when clearly it needed Rudder trim ..🤔😳😳..It's a great looking Gull though, not sure an EDF like that is appropriate, the inlets and outlets don't look like they're efficient enough... I'd take the Fan out and fly it off a proper Slope or Beach location...

How do you get the Inside structure of your prints for your planes to print, because when I use Cura I can’t get the inside structure to print it only prints with infill
@Vipcioo2 жыл бұрын
You must read the available instructions carefully and/or buy better glasses ;) The most important reason why only Cura prints this is the "Special Modes-> Surface Modes-> Surface" option. That's why you are failing.

It appears underpowered and not enough vertical surface (rudder). I enjoy your stuff and you do a really good job. Still, 3d printed planes are way too fragile, I hope they get better with the designs. I just started using Polylite and I'm having issues. I suspect it has gotten wet since I opened the package. I've looked at reviews for this product but haven't found one that lists their print settings the way you do here. Would be great if you could print something with Polylite and give us your impressions.
