Now I want to buy some ball detents I may never use to add to the pile of cool things I might some day use. Seems really elegant with the use of existing materials where possible vs every thing looking like a 3d printer nail.
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
Thanks! I try to incorporate parts that already exist, like you said. There's no need to design that spring feature as a 3d-printed part.
@nerddubАй бұрын
this is absolutely true, but it also super easy to add just a spring pocket and use whatever diameter spring / ball combo gives you the desired force or fits into your project constraints, same mating part, just detent pockets. once i figured this out, i have added ball detents to things that definitely didnt need them, but I needed them hahaha
@mikedtubeyАй бұрын
Wow, thanks so much for the pintable's models!
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
I'm glad you found them useful!
@joell439Ай бұрын
Very clever. I’ll definitely be using these ball detents in the future. 👍😎👍
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
This was a great application for them and I'm for sure going to think of other uses for them!
@RingsWorkshopАй бұрын
1) Great design and execution on this, very satisfying and well thought out. 2) I totally get the idea of messing with a camera for hours and just wanting to get the project done. 3) "It's already over engineered enough"...this is blasphemy as there is no such thing sir! Haha! Great work as always!
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
Ha, something can CERTAINLY cross over into "over-engineering" territory! Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. That being said, check back next week, I have another over-engineered solution.
@mikedtubeyАй бұрын
Great idea with the ball detent. ill integrate that into some things.
@JonathanRansomАй бұрын
I have no known current use for the detents, but I'm still going to order some. Seems like a great thing to have around when I finally need them. Great project!
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
I actually had a use for these in a project for work, but ended up doing something else. I'm glad I came back to them for this.

@asertaАй бұрын
14:44 keep an idea on wear and tear on the tube. The ball is after all a "point" touch on the brush's tube, and it might wear down a groove (as one keeps naturally placing things in the same spot once they get used to it, it's a human thing we all do). My old, old German made vacuum machine for ashes had a clip on system very similar to this, and because the bend had to go in a recess, it eventually wore down the metal on the edge thin. Just a thought.
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
I doubt this will get used enough for it to be an issue. ASA is pretty tough stuff too. BUT, these ball springs are actually just a ball bearing, so the wear should be somewhat minimal. We'll see how it goes, I could always print the 'cup' out of a different material, or even something with carbon fiber which would actually wear down the ball instead (which is easier to replace).
@mr_voronАй бұрын
That’s amazingly clean. Well executed! First thing I thought of when I saw the swing and click intro was “Oh hey, Dyson cord manager thing”. I’m gonna need to incorporate those detents into some designs. Sounds incredibly satisfying.

Very nice little widget to add to 3d printed stuff. Im much more enjoying watching and learning about the theory behind how and why something is designed these days rather than watching build montages
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
Same. I'd rather know how to do my own stuff than just watch other people put something together.

@BobGarrett66Ай бұрын
I may be getting really old. Hell, I am old. I’ve been a woodworker for almost 4 decades now. Never heard those called “ball detents”. I do have a gallon jug full of “bullet catches” that I have used in building numerous cabinets where they are used with a small strike plate. When you install them into a cabinet door, they CATCH in the strike plate to hold the door closed. Some folks use magnetic catches for a similar solution. Bullet catches (now called ball detents) are a more elegant solution. Either way, great use for them to be used for your hose storage. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and an idea for holding the hose together so you can access your dust collection control…… bungee cord. Edited: For grammar
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
Things have many names, especially when used in different contexts. What's a rabbet for some is a slot for others.
@m97120Ай бұрын
Those ball detents are an amazing idea! I've seen them in some products but it never clicked in my brain that I could use them in my own projects too. I'm gonna stock a few of those.
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
Right?! I came across them for another project and I'm glad I remembered them.

1:18 fire hose storage racks, specifically for the rigid type of hose used as adapters. It's basically a regular hose holder on steroids.

AH, saddle rack. Nice. I still like my solution better though, I can store the accessories. But good to know!

For SD cards, I’ve mostly switched to Sony Tough models and haven’t had issues with plastic bits breaking off! I had a similar situation as yours, a piece of card stuck in the camera, luckily no permanent damage to the camera!

OOF. Yeah, I saw those, but they're a bit spendy. Mine was already falling apart and I kept using it. That's on me.

YES! 0.2mm clearance between the ball and the mating wall works great.
@pepedel13Ай бұрын
That look really nice!! You did a really nice job there! I would suggest you to put a bit of grease between moving parts to increase it's lifetime (and lower the noise) and thread locking glue in the nuts.

i'm thinking of making a vertical reel for my 4 inch hose. the reel can be turned and hose can be guided to spiral-wrap around it a few times. that way i can have it only a couple feet tall, and 22 inches diameter.
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
nice! it could absolutely be made in any orientation.
@theJonnymacАй бұрын
great project! what kind of clearances did you use for the detents in the groove and the mating holes?
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
I just used 0.2mm, and 0.5mm for the clearance between the part bodies. I just modeled up the ball spring thing and gave everything 0.2mm clearance. It worked great.
@MumrikDKАй бұрын
That a tempting mechanic to use for something, but I really do wonder about the steel on plastic wear from the ball. I fear it'll make the locking positions really weak over time.
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
ASA is pretty strong. I did think about that, but at the resting position, the ball is not really under tension, so it's happy to live there forever. It only sees some wear when you spin the tab. That doesn't happen very often, maybe a few times a week? I'll let you know if it fails, but the ball also spins, so the friction should be pretty minimal.
@bami2Ай бұрын
20:38 why can't I hold all this hose?
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
It was oddly difficult. It's relatively heavy and 20 feet is quite a bit.
@sokofabcoАй бұрын
When designing parts for ASA, do you do anything to compensate for shrinkage? Generally, I design to size then scale 100.4% or 100.5% in slicer.
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
I didn't notice any issues, everything was spot on. The main mechanism was PLA and ASA, and I did nothing to compensate. Everything was printed on a Bambu X1C.
@deziomakesАй бұрын
This was great! I decided a while ago that I'm silently protesting any video that uses an "oh no!" face thumbnail. I suppose you got some feedback on that and perhaps I'm not alone in this fight. I'm really looking forward to seeing where your journey takes you.
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
Yeah, I do hate those too. BUT, I still can't make myself do 'full clickbait'. That would have been something like "stop doing this!" or "all your designs should have this" or something stupid like that. Consider subscribing if you want to see me 'try' to do clickbait wrong. ;--)

All that effort and you didn't sand and paint the plywood??? No veneer on the outer edge?? You just put the camera in the trash??? Sounds like another project
@RobertCowanDIYАй бұрын
I actually did sand the plywood. I even used wood-filler on the voids, I just didn't show that. But this isn't a woodworking channel, I'm not going to veneer and stain something that doesn't need it ;-) And no, the camera didn't go in the trash, it's a couple grand, I just need to get it fixed.
@lunaumbra5179Ай бұрын
