Does this drive back, or will it hold a load without needing a shaft brake?

In our 3D-printed model, only the pinion can be used as the driver, it won't work the other way around. But I believe in a metal model, it works both ways.

This is like a worm drive, but it isn't, because the 2 shafts aren't at right angles
