Very cool. Still favor you on the Daddy-O mouthpiece but this was pretty surprising. Seems a little under in the upper register but like I said, very surprising for a 3D printed mouthpiece made by a 7th grader. And the blue coloring is a plus!

However, I am a 3D-printing enthusiast and have made a few mouthpieces for my friends, just as Dave's student did for him. Perfect description. Mid century sound indeed. Very warm toned. Reminded me of the sound of the Dorcy Brothers big band era.... just before rock n roll. I could almost hear Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin singing in the foreground... it was THAT reminiscent.

I had a friend try this. The plastic that 3d printing was made of was too stiff for us so we couldn't make it vibrate. It was a good try though

Maximilian Norris It took me 3 tries including learning how to use the CAD software to get a good Reed, there’s no way you were using something that hard, I’d try printing in different configurations and then sanding the Reed smooth.

Definitely as you’ve proven it’s very playable and if you got the chops it versatile. To me it easily meets brightness for smooth jazz. I would encourage him as long as he’s interested to try other configuration. By the way did he use it and how did he like it. That information might be more valuable since he’s a student.

I have been into music my whole life. Have seen many changes. Watched everybody go to metal after they learned on cheap plastic. Some of those real gold and silver plated mouthpieces are awesome. I was listening to you navigate that mouthpiece like a champ!!I was listening for the quack sound you can get from them, and it was better than most. Smooth tone, and sounded like transitioning was pretty easy. You are a great player. I think I will have to look you up more.

I have an antique C soprano saxophone which, miraculously, has its original mouthpiece. I've been wanting to make a 3D print copy of it as backup, since I understand that Bb mouthpieces are typically out of tune on C saxes. Your video certainly is encouraging!

I really enjoyed the phrase you played between 1.23 to 1.28, the way you use ghost notes sounds brilliant, it would be great to watch a video on how you use this technique to make the phrase sound good, I can ghost notes nots to a degree but not within a phrase.👍

Thanks! Honestly nothing to specifically work on tone - I just listened a lot, and had a sense of the sound I wanted in my head. I keep a really relaxed embouchure while playing, and try to say "awww" throughout.

I dont think so because there is always a nylonn which holds the basic i frastructure of the 3d printed object and it is then mixed with you material of choice( carbon fiber or fiberglass etc) or thats how the 3d printer we have at my school works

ABS should be inert to saliva. Without excessive heat or sunlight there shouldn’t be any leeching of styrenes either. PLA is food safe. It’s probably not polycarbonate but if it were beware BPA leeching.
