Because of a very popular request to make a fully working 3D printed hovercraft. Using only a 3D printer, a plastic bag for a skirt and basic electronics such as brushless motor from drones. The 3D printed parts went together with a pop and then it was just a matter of figuring out the electronics. I thought I had a problem with the skirt being to thin and suggestible to tears, but I was very wrong, the skirt held up great! Even on the water, sand, ice and indoors driving like crazy didn't puncture the skirt.
This is the 3D printer I recommend: goo.gl/f6gTkb
*Here's the parts list: (I will update soon)

my single motor ducted build does it very well too, no 3D printing, just coroplast and a few tubes of CA glue..... and a pool noodle skirt! any all extra weight is an enemy, just like near anything RC.

You can put foam (polystyrene) in the skirt rim. That way if you loose power it still floats. I used to have a remote controlled hover craft as a kids that had this and it worked well.

A hovercraft on water becomes a displacement vehicle. When it hovers on water with zero speed (aka stopped), it creates a ramp or hump of water around the skirt. To start moving at speed, it has to have enough power to accelerate up and over this displacement hump. That's why it had trouble "snapping" from one direction to another in 180 turns. If it pauses long enough, it sinks back into the displacement hump. The Reynolds number probably also scales against the performance of a small hovercraft. Regardless of this jibber jabber, this is another awesome video RCLO!!! Please keep them coming!

IM 49 and love your videos,and was interested in 3d printing but im not tech savy and dont have access to those that are, but darn it your enthusiasm got to me and i bought the Ender2 i was shocked to get zero instruction,and a iffy set up manual, but i did it,and yes it took 5 days of tinkering but i got my first print,and it was perfect, im sure you remember that feeling,i was more than a little surprised how euphoric the feeling was to see that i made this,so im now hard core studying the web sites that let you design your own stuff,its super complicated but i tell myself millions of others have done it ,and you can too, thanks for the enthusiasm Simon keep up the great work

I had a toy hovercraft when I was little. It had a polystyrene part inside the skirt that had two functions: it reduced the volume of air inside the skirt making it easier to inflate, and second it helped keep it afloat if it died in a lake. I still find it ingenious. Yours turned out even nicer than my toy, and that was injection moulded. Great job

you can actually use a iron and weld the sheets of plastic together. take a shopping bag or the trash bag. use parchment paper or something to protect the clothes iron and you can run that all around and boom youve doubled up the thickness of the plastic. you could take cheap thin grocery bags and make them as thick as you want.
@backpocket718
@backpocket718 5 жыл бұрын
To add to what I said earlier. I bet you could use a clothes iron to also weld the skirt to the craft. Also I wonder if it would be possible to weld 2 thin materials together but add something to parts to keep them from welding. Creating voids in the middle of the 2 sheets where you could either inflate separately to create a baffled structure, or use the void to add foam of some sort so that the craft floats even if the inflation isn't full throttle. Could also make parts of the plastic skirt thin and other parts 1,2,3 layers thick for durability perhaps.

Some 30 years ago I did the same in wood and it was just as fast although I had to use NiMH and brushed motors. One thing I think you should look into is how the skirt of a real and larger hovercraft is made (like the old Canal hovercrafts). I think it could use a huge performance gain in float-hight. Also using a propeller to fill te skirt, is something I will probably never understand. A centrifugal airblade is so much more efficient and needs a much much smaller inlet. Now the inlet also serves as an outlet with an enormous amount of efficiency loss.

I once built a hovercraft it worked amazing. I made it out of a foam cooler and did not use a bag. When you flip it over, underneath was a concave design and the surface that touched the ground was a skid pad that made a 360 degree perfect seal. The blower was a turbine that was placed right at the center so the craft floated leveled and made it easier to install the electronics symmetrically. I would love to show you the design so you can take it to the next level. I’d like to see what you will do with it!!
