3D Printed Engines

Күн бұрын

Printed on a homemade RepRap Prusa 3D printer.
Completely reverse engineered Toyota 22RE 4 cylinder engine. Can completely print a fully rotating model. Working crank, pistons, and valve train. The valves open and close!!!. It may not be the most exciting engine but its the only one I had in my garage. Great if you want to learn about engines and how the moving parts in them work. All parts are printed except for a few bearings and fasteners.
More than 3 days of total print time.
The block alone was 34 hours. So make sure you have a well calibrated and reliable printer.
Some print times calculated in Cura at .2mm layer height
Engine Block - 40 hours
Head - 23 hours
Valve Cover - 10 hours
Oil pan - 14 hours
See Thingiverse for all the info and part files.

This is awesome. I went to a technical college for automotive maintenance and having not grown up with access to cars to pull apart, it's models like this that made understanding and learning possible for me. With that said, this model was probably much cheaper and did just as well if not better job at demonstrating part movements than anything I had in college. I have yet to mess with 3d printing, but I truly admire it's capabilities and the work and time every creator puts into each print. Thanks for sharing.

@NomaddUK
@NomaddUK 8 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Gordon - You can print it in a single job if you are VERY brave and have a VERY accurate and big enough printer. But there would be loads of support material inside that would need to be removed. This would mean taking it apart to get the support material out. So, realistically, it is better and MUCH easier to print it as part and then assemble it. I have also built my own 3D prusa i3 by reading up on bits needed and then building it. It works perfectly about 90% of the time. You need to be patient and expect LOTS of failures before it is complete. Seriously, try it. It is not that difficult to do and WAYYYY cheaper than buying one.

Eric Harrell brilliant work, were there any scans involved?
@3DPrintedEngines
@3DPrintedEngines 9 жыл бұрын
Andy Garag Thanks, everything was measured with a set of calipers and an angle finder so the dimensional accuracy if probably off here and there. As for scans, I wish I had a 3D scanner, it would have made modeling all the parts much easier.
@american3dprinting866
@american3dprinting866 9 жыл бұрын
Eric Harrell In our experience, you're much better off modeling in CAD than scanning. Scanning will approximate stuff, but for precision and parts that fit together you really need CAD.

Properly calibrated Prusa. See guys diy printers can do one heck of a job if the power and plastic are not interrupted. dependable? I would not want to try a 40 hr print on a store bought printer with out one heck of a lot practice and testing.
@3DPrintedEngines
@3DPrintedEngines 9 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I always tell people that want to buy a 3d printer to just build your own. Even if its an unassembled kit. If you build your machine, youre more aware of what its capable of. And you're gonna have to make repairs on any store bought printer no matter what brand anyways. Might as well know how to fix it since you're the one that built it.

A Human You can get a complete kit from ebay for about $330. Search for Prusa i3 kit. You'll need some basic technical knowledge but if you've built your computer or you're good at googling or following instructions you should be find. There's a ton of support for RepRap printers online. For something thats already assembled and ready to print there are many for around $4-500 but i dont have any experience with them and they normally have smaller build areas that wouldnt fit this engine. You can also look up printrbot too, good printers and support.
@MrSpad007
@MrSpad007 9 жыл бұрын
A Human Read, read and read some more find out all you can. then decide what you want to build. here is a source RepRap.Forums forums.reprap.org/ and see what improved stuff you can download. go back in time at thingiverse and see what some folk made to correct what they think a printer needs and see if your kit has the improvements you want. as with any thing you get what you pay for. Good luck have fun.

I printed all the parts but putting it together is a pain haha. It woulda been awesome if you did an assembly video - or a complete assembly guide. However, with a lot of troubleshooting, it IS going together. You are awesome for reverse engineering this! I really hope I can get it to run on its own... So far the parts move manually all together. I hope you continue to post more files for different engines! These are fantastic, you are super talented.

The gear that drives the Cam Gear is called the Crank Gear, it sits on the Crank Shaft underneath the Oil Pump and Timing Chain Cover. The Crank Gear rotates the Cam Gear buy meshing the Timing Chain to the teeth of the gears. I Imagine if you can do all this so far, you wouldn't have a problem making it more detailed. Also a Cap-less Distributor would be neat with a couple Dizzy Gears, one being on the Cam Shaft.
