I have a bunch of FDM terrain I printed out of airship kit my trick is to cover them in regular basing texture. Not only it enhances the grin dark look but hides the printing lines very well. I can't stress how easy it is to apply some texture to those pieces. You can paint them as corrosion or grime it dosent even matter.

I actually was planning on doing something like this for some Tatooine terrain I just printed-- possibly using textured spray paint. I'll have to test your method out, too!

A few corrections/notes brought to my attention from comments! 1) I accidentally grabbed 1/4" hardwood instead of MDF at home depot-- so that's why it was hard to cut! (Blaqk Havok) 2) The stippling on the walls would have been way easier if I used a sponge instead of a brush! (Loosely Collected) Orchitect She-Hulk Interior: bit.ly/FDMSpaceHulk

I know this video is a little old now but you could also use a soldering iron on pla to add bullet holes as well as laser burns and other effects to walls. Ive done this to some of my failed prints to make them more usable and give them a little more character.

Oh wow that's a great idea! You could probably use it to make lil' etchings carved into the walls. I will try that!

Nice video. Instead of the painter's tape, you may have been able to make a couple of half height pockets out of cardboard or stiff paper that you could put the piece in, stiple, remove and put the next piece in.

This is a really smart idea! Especially for the flat walls. Thanks!

you have some good advice and approach to the project. but a bit of clarification. that is not MDF.. it looks like Luan or 1/4" plywood. still. thumbs up !

Oh wow-- I didn't even realize the wood grain on it. I must have grabbed it by accident 😅. That explains a lot. I appreciate it!

Try using sponges or open cell foam instead of a brush to stipple paint on.

Whoops! I see that you switched to sponges later in the video.

And everything looks great. I need to square some stuff up on my FDM machines and get back to printing. Because this is exactly the sort of stuff I want to be able to print for my gaming table.

I'm almost done printing a set in resin, im a bit worried about the magnet, 5x3mm don't fit, need to go with 4x2mm. I hope the result are half as good as yours !
@iPaintSmallThings
@iPaintSmallThings Жыл бұрын
That would probably work, too-- as long as you super glue them in there they should work fine! I'm sure it will be fantastic!

I print at 210° extruder, ~60° bed, .2mm layer height, and with a brim. Hopefully that helps! I find a brim is a really good way to keep things from warping, which may lead to things not fitting right.

How did you end up printing the columns? I tried with some slicer-generated supports and found that they are almost impossible to remove from the snap fit areas and from the hollow area of the column.
@iPaintSmallThings
@iPaintSmallThings 20 күн бұрын
I used a "brim" with no supports. For whatever magical reason the snap fits printed completely fine!

how long did it take you to print on your FDM printer?
@iPaintSmallThings

8 walls or 11 columns prints in about 24 hours. I could print 4 floor pieces at a time in about 7 hours-- I'd do one print in the morning, and then one at night. So over the course of a week you could have a decent amount printed out!

They shouldn't-- but just make sure the print bed is super clean! I recently switched from 70% to 99% IPA and it made a huge difference. For these (printed before I switched to 99%), I printed with a brim to help it stick a little better.
