3D Scanning with a Single Picture

The rubber fuel tank mount for my vintage motorcycle wasn't manufactured or sold anymore, so I had to make my own! Using all free software, I made a 3D model, 3D printed a prototype, and cast the final part with urethane rubber in a 3D printed mold.

I actually have a rectangular-ish motorcycle rubber tank support piece i need to fabricate from a picture using a 3d printer, so this is extremely helpful

Young man, as an old, retired designer, in both graphic and industrial design, you can not imagine what I would have given to have such tools to use instead of my old drafting table and rulers ! See, my first computer was a *revolutionnary* 1984 Apple MacIntosh ! Me and my partner at the time, were the very first ones in our area to use such a machine. Clients were do impressed ! As our design business grew, we hired fresh, new, faster young turks as you are. We got tech distanced so fast, it was scariy. Now, simply as a hobbyist DIYer, I would like so much to use such tools. But at 70 y.o. the learning curve is too steep ! My learning cells are now too slow, damn it ! My internal hard disk is obviously overloaded. Anyway, I found your channel by your resto on the 1985 Fiero 2M4. I owned 2 1984, and now my precious, mint 1988 GT, 5 speed. At least, we're Fiero enthousiasts, about the only thing we share ! Keep on doing your fine work ! You have a bright future in engineering, sir ! 👍

You just make all this sound so simple, but really is amazing how you can literally make a part probably just as good as OEM at home with minimal cost. My first 3d printer is in the mail. I am renovating an abandoned house. When I got here, the fridge was nasty and the shelves were all gone, as well as the inner door parts. The sticker with the serial number and model number are faded and unreadable. The fridge was super cleaned outside and still works. Rather than buying a new fridge before I renovate the kitchen, I am using the old one. I will be applying this methodology on the door interface for the door shelf braces. Print the left and right sides, attach them to something in-between and hopefully have new temporary door shelf retainers. So, this video was super helpful.

@@marcryvon Most people would have tossed this fridge. I spent a lot of time scrubbing it outside to get it clean enough to keep using it. I chose to keep it because I was able to get it clean and I would rather not buy one of today's throw away models.

when using 3D printing to create a mold, I had always imagined printing a part, using silicone to create a mold, then using that mold with whatever material I wanted. I never even thought of printing the mold itself, that's awesome!

The vanishing point was a big part of the art, geometry and drafting classes I took in private school which has been very handy when I designed and built my own house from 90 percent reclaimed materials 30ish years ago. The irony, I guess, is I've never owned or used a computer other than the phone and tablet I have mainly for communication, entertainment and education which is why I'm getting the Finger right now. Vague psychobabble over.

I have AutoCad and 3DS Max on my machine and I am very proficient with both, Blender on the other hand I am not. Blender is a pretty complex program to use and you made it look so simple.

That's a 77-78 5-speed 280z, assuming the bumper and badge are original. Judging from the paint I'd say it's another car you found sitting abandoned in a field for 10+ years. I can't tell if it's a 2+2 or not or what your plans are for it, but I can't wait to find out! Man, you're really hitting all my favorite classics.

Nice tutorial. And I agree that making a mold for casting, rather than printing the final piece, was the better way to go. Wouldn't want a part de-laminating while you were riding.

For the entertainment value, have been following your works since the first of the Fiero, in that I learned Freecad by myself and always wanted Blender but never looked into it, I see now what a great tool Blender is. I actually used a bunch of these processes and a few others yesterday to design and print a sprocket for a motorcycle water pump for a friend in town. 3D printers are amazing. It took me 2 hours to design using Tinkercad, CorelDRAW and a few pictures and measurements with my caliper. 4hs to print, though!

Really very cool. The CAD bit I'm fine with but this is a great way of getting the data when you don't have the parts to measure. I have to say, my FX experience is definitely limited to sitting in front of a screen in the cinema!

If the purpose is to make as OEM part as possible then it is a good plan. Lazy me would have just made visually similar part in CAD, using the distance between bolt holes as a reference. Anyways - good work and looking foward to new episode.
