Me: Sees Jadow has replayed the sonic games... Oh boy. Sonic Battle 2. I LOVED this game and i will agree Jadow is 100000% percent right about the Chao Gardens... He also left out how the game KILLS YOU with sad music if you try to get rid of one... To the point i was SAD over trying to get new ones. Great game, hard at times... Fun. Sonic Adventure: I remember hating Amy's stages because chase levels SCARED me to death. Also didn't like combing EVERY level for keys and such. Never beat it i believe. Big made me roll my eyes with annoyance at the lame gameplay. Other games. Didn't play all of them. Can't comment. Sonic heroes: Loved it at times, hated the slippery collision detection... Thank you for mentioning how much it SUCKS to stay on platforms, Jadow. I know the feeling. Also know how much of a PAIN the chao emeralds stages were. Don't feel bad about not winning them, i wanted to THROW my controller over how hard they were. Shadow: Oh no... Welp, can't say i agree, Jadow. I hated constantly fighting enemies and the platforming. The Chao monsters made me ticked off, I only won a handful of times and i REALLY didn't care for the game. I know what it's like to grow up with old sonic games. I barely beat a handful. Can't wait to hear the rest of the review... Did you have a favorite? I actually hope sonic doesn't die out... But just wanted to share my two cents. It's always a pleasure to hear you rip into games considering we need SOMETHING to focus on besides the chaos. Also didn't get the 'WAR SUCKS' themes you said the games were good for, i just remember the fun gameplay... Unless you were knuckles or the ghosts showed up that terrified kid me.

Oh poor Shadow. Poor guy got turned from a guy who's willing to do the right thing to a stupid friendless Edgelord who steals popcorn from babies. If there's one thing Sonic 06 got right it was Shadow. It feels like him at his most mature, having put his troubled past behind him and coming off as quite professional and willing to help.

Despite most fans glossing over that game and it’s characters due to how much of a mess the gameplay is. Which honestly sucks since I wish the characterization like that was salvaged for better games and not the stuff currently being made like they don’t know what to do with Sonic as a whole!

You wanna know a real kicker? You may have missed it during the final boss fight against Devil Doom, but during that fight you can get a call from Eggman who confirms that he found Shadow and nursed him to health, and that Shadow is in fact the original. _Yes, they confirm it in a terse sentence you're likely to miss during a boss fight by a character who isn't even present_ .

As someone who enjoys Sonic Heroes, one thing I would like to point out about the combat when using the Power character is that you can fire off attacks while jumping. This is how you utilize the Power character in small, cramped areas, letting you attack without sliding off the stage. It seemed like no one else in this comment section has pointed this out, so for those who read this comment, you don't have to attack on the ground all the time. As for the Special Stages, though... Beyond the music and visuals (Which I enjoy)... Yeah, you're not wrong about them! XD

After being teased for 1-2 years we finally come full circle! "I like Shadow the Hedgehog." Finally, someone else understands the struggle! SA1 and SA2 comments are not to bad. The Sonic Battle one, surprising but cute. I'll also point out that Big is somewhat important in the final battle. Froggy has Chaos' data from having his tail. Source of that is in the Team Rose ending ( if I remember right ). Shadow the Hedgehog, was a bit surprised you said the "split pathway" stage was the worse since I'd argue Death Ruins and The Ark would take that place. Since the game does change it's stage design in some places when you decide to do the stage objectives. Lava Shelter gets harder when you listen to Eggmans missions, same with Space Gadget when you decide to properly "race" Sonic but I respect it. Will admit, it was worth the wait after so long waiting.

I do agree with you Shadow the Hedgehog the video game is the most criminally underrated video game Sega made. Sure it has its flaws but I love the story of the game like it explains more detail on how Dr. Gerald Robotnik's created his creation Shadow and why he created the Eclipse Cannon in first place.

Metal Sonic being Heroes main villain was a dumb twist. I don't get what is so special about this character. He appeared in Sonic CD and he was just another Sonic robot built by Eggman. He didn't have any impact on the story or anything. Yet fans hype him up so much, and a lot of that seems to come from animated Sonic movie where he actually defeats Sonic, unlike in the game. It's like how Star Wars fans talked about how awesome Boba Fett was in ESB despite him barely doing anything. This is not the type of character who deserved to act as a twist villain. A youtuber J'sReviews noted another issue with Shadow trying to be darker is that despite having the trappings of a darker storyline, the game doesn't commit to it. Due to each of the game's level existing in a vacuum there are no lasting consequences for evil choices. Shadow can help the Black Arms blow up a city with the Eclipse Cannon (the explosion is visible from space so it probably took out a chunk of the countryside as well), but then you are told everyone evacuated. You have a mission to kill the president, and he's fine by the next level if you do.en I will give the game credit some things in the final story. Shadow is mocked for brooding about his past in this game, except by the end he actually does put it all behind him in a rather tearjerking image of him throwing away that photo of Maria and Gerald. In the fight with Devil Doom, if it goes on long enough you get some legitimately frighting dialogue with everyone else saying that the nerve gas released by the Black Comet is rendering them unable to move. Sonic is visibly afraid and Eggman confesses to lying to Shadow about him being an android in a line that makes it clear Eggman doesn't know if he is going to live or die. Trying to include more of a story in a Sonic game is something that is sadly mocked because people ranted about Sonic 06 so much that they say anything being like Sonic 06 is bad even if it's something like having character besides Sonic being playable, even if the Genesis games had Tails and Knuckles as playable characters.

Glad someone mentioned J's reivews. I just watched them. Metal sonic? Probably because he was the only REAL rival sonic had before Jet, Shadow, Silver and them. It's my two cents. I didn't really know metal sonic when i played heroes. How is story mocked in Sonic games? I rather liked the story in colors or generations or adventure.

@@noahbusch7542 From what I gather people like him due to his design and boss fight. All the same they really overhype him. I have heard people complain about Metal Sonic appearing and losing too easily in the Archie Comic, ignoring that Metal Sonic wasn't presented as anything more than a flunky for Eggman in Sonic CD and it's actually Eggman who kills Sonic if he loses the race. People tend to mock the idea of attempts to include serious moments in Sonic games, claiming stuff like how a game about cartoon animals can't have any serious moments. Ignoring all the movies and TV shows with cartoon animals that have had serious moments. As J pointed out, a lot of hate also comes from the heat thrown at Sonic 06 where people will hate on the idea just it was used in Sonic 06. People say Sonic 06 is proof that ideas like serious moments and plays as characters besides Sonic won't work, while ignoring the Genesis era had playable characters besides Sonic. The Sonic fandom just attracts an number of people who have opinions involving a ton of absolutes with no room for grey eras.

It's why really Shadow could be revisited. Just swap the guns for Chaos powers of different variations, ease up on the requirements of missions and have more variety in missions and get rid of the edgelord tone and you have what could be a pretty fun action platformer spin-off series.

If you think adventure 1 knuckles radar sucks worse know this. In adventure 2 the radar only detects one emerald piece at a time and sometimes you can potentially be next to an emerald piece but the radar doesn’t tell you until you find the one it wants you to find.

Overall, I enjoyed part 1 of this retrospective quite a bit. Although I did have a few things that I disagreed with, I did agree with most of what you said about these games so far. Now here are my personal opinions on the games that you’ve discussed in this video (minus Sonic Battle; one of the two Sonic Games in this retrospective that I haven’t played yet, although it looks like a really fun game! It kinda reminds me of Power Stone). I find both Sonic Adventure games to be solid experiences that were (actually, still are) a ton of fun to play, albeit flawed in several places. I really enjoyed the action stages in both games, as they were the most fun parts for me, but I my opinions on the other gameplay styles in both (I’m one of those freaks who personally liked Big’s fishing stages and didn’t hate Big the Cat at all), I liked the storylines from both games even with the problems those two games have with their stories (Adventure 1’s story being unfocused at times and Adventure 2’s story having numerous plot holes and unanswered questions that a few reviewers have pointed out), I enjoyed the unlockables and side content both games have (although SA2’s Kart Racing Mini Game isn’t nearly as good as other kart racing games at the time like Mario Kart 64/Double Dash or Diddy Kong Racing), and I love the soundtracks from both games (even Knuckles’ stage themes). I can understand why some people may or may not like these games (or at least have issues with them) as there are plenty of things to like/dislike about them. I used to like both Adventure games equally, but I’ve personally preferred Adventure 1 to the sequel, but I still like Adventure 2, as there are still plenty of things to like about that game, such as Shadow The Hedgehog (my favorite character). Also, I had no idea that SA1’s director was offended by people hating Big… so that’s why we’ve gotten so many cameos from Big in every version of Adventure 2, except for the GameCube release. Also, did you know that Big the Cat was a playable character in SA2’s multiplayer exclusively in the original Dreamcast version? No joke, he was piloting Eggman’s Egg Walker. For Sonic Heroes, I personally loved that game a lot, and personally liked it more than the Adventure games. Granted that’s not saying much, that’s like saying that I liked Return of the Jedi more than A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back (which, fun fact about me, Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars Movie of all time). I’ll agree that the controls are slippery at times and the game can be glitchy, but I personally enjoyed the team mechanics, the levels, the story, and so on. It’s a Sonic game that’s mixed on several people with some loving it, some hating it, and others finding it mediocre to average, and I consider it one of my favorites. Finally, you’re not alone on this one, as I love the Shadow The Hedgehog video game! I used to consider this game a guilty pleasure of mine, but nowadays I see it as an underrated gem of a game. I love a lot of things about the gameplay, including the multiple stages and endings, the different weapons, the missions, and even the vehicles (plus more). I don’t mind Shadow’s characterization here, nor do I mind the story here, as I find those to be enjoyable by my standards and have some positive aspects to them. This game reminds me of the reception of The Phantom Menace, as people were mixed on both Shadow The Hedgehog and The Phantom Menace; there are people who really like both Shadow and Phantom Menace, some who have a seething hatred towards both, and people who can see both the positives and the negatives of both. I have 3 tips for the Chaos Powers; the first is that filling the meters up all the way will make Shadow invincible and give him infinite ammo for all of his weapons (which will definitely come in handy for tougher situations), the second tip is to use Chaos Control to get to the goal ring for the Neutral Missions, the third and final tip is that Chaos Blast is good for boss fights (as the Chaos Blast will drain their health faster for an easier A Rank). I also recommend jumping into enemies to shave of the health bars of the bigger enemies faster if you don’t have a weapon (I learned that from ClementJ642, one of my favorite KZbinrs). Also, there are 2 interesting fun facts that you should know about this game; the first one is that the game was the result of a poll on Sega’s website after the release of Sonic Heroes asking what character the fans would like to see get their own game (Shadow won by a landslide due to his popularity; I learned that one from TheRetroReplay by the way, another one of my favorite KZbinrs); the second is that Black Doom is voiced by Sean Schemmel, the current voice of Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise (in fact, he used to work for 4Kids Entertainment before working for Funimation). I should also bring up that there will be a lot of recognizable anime English Dub voice actors in the games from the 2010s such as Roger Craig Smith, Kate Higgins, Michelle Ruff, Karen Strassman, Vic Mignogna, and so on. Sorry about the long comment, I had a lot to say about what I thought of your video and my personal opinions on the games that you’ve covered. I also hope you don’t mind my comparisons between 3D Sonic games and Star Wars movies, as I feel like they have some things in common (at least in terms of their reception from fans of both franchises). I enjoyed part 1 of this retrospective and I’m looking forward to part 2, keep it the good work man, I really enjoy your videos. Also, sorry I’m late, but congratulations on your 10 years on KZbin! Edit: I also forgot to mention, I had no idea that you like Sonic Labyrinth! I haven’t played it myself, but I’ve heard that it’s one of the most universally disliked games in the series out there. However, everyone has at least one game in a certain franchise (not just Sonic The Hedgehog) that they like that a lot of people don’t like; I’ve got plenty of those myself, and I might bring up a few of them in part 2 of your Sonic retrospective.

@@noahbusch7542 To be honest, the only games I can think of that don’t get hate are some of the older Genesis games (mostly 2 & 3K), and even then I could be wrong about that. I’m also saddened by the fact that so many Sonic games have gotten so much hate, especially the kind of unwarranted hate from the people who don’t take to kindly to those who have opposing opinions. Thankfully, there are some Sonic fans out there who don’t do that and are instead nice people who welcome different opinions.

I think you're the first person I've come across that shares the opinion that Shadow is better than Heroes lmao It's still a huge guilty pleasure for me but if you sat me down and forced me to play either, I'd pick Shadow any day. I'm one of those whose favourite early 3D game is Adventure. I just think it ticks the right amount of boxes for me, Big the Cat aside. The level design is a lot less flat than SA2, the soundtrack is my favourite in the franchise and the setpieces are really fun. The problem with a lot of these, though, is focus, which is still an issue with modern games. With these, Heroes got close but fell head first into a wall with so many other issues souring the experience. It just seems since Heroes, they have to add an outlying gimmick of some sort because they think it would be boring otherwise (3 person teams, guns, abrupt character switching & Silver, werehog, wisps, classic Sonic, wisps again, classic again with an OC). The mantra of having different movesets with a solid foundation works for the classic style games so I'm not sure why they're so scared to do that for the 3D games.

From what I've heard and seen, the PC port of Generations is pretty good. Though I guess running the game at a consistent 60FPS might change your opinion of it slightly, so I may donate a 360/PS3 and a copy of the game when I have the time and money to do so.

I have the PC port of Generations and the only issue that I have is that the display config file get's corrupted for some unknow reasons so I had to delete the file and re-launch the game by setup. Other than that I have no issues with performance with the game at all! i5-4690K GTX 1070 16GB DDR3 Ram 1920x1080p 144hz

Big is a funny character, and I've actually grown to like the concept of having fishing in a Sonic game, but there are definitely ways to make it so that players don't have to beat it just to see the final story.

A couple of things I like to point out, Cream is actually 6 not 8 (also I still say it's a shame they wimpified her after Advance 3). It is possible to beat Cannon's core with out the air necklace but it's VERY difficult. Btw I thought what you said about Heroes was hilarious in spite of it being my fav 3D Sonic game.

As someone who didn’t grow up with Sonic and didn’t play a single title in the series until 2014, when I marathoned most of them (I didn’t play Unleashed HD or ‘06, because they’re not on PC and I don’t have/am not interested in getting an Xbox), I can say this: the only 3D Sonic games I enjoyed where Colours and Generations, all the other were either crap or mediocre/forgettable at best.

I think the news report about Shadow being mistaken for Sonic is to be a reference to the Sonic X anime, which the VERY SAME mistake is done there, in fact Sonic Adventures 2 and perhaps its first entry is all meant to be video game adaptations of the Sonic X anime as a lot of locations used in the anime are used for the games, such as for example the game name dropping Prison Island, the same location in the anime.

I just remembered something in shadow the hedgehog in the level the doom the dark objective has you kill soldiers and mechs and one mech is glitched to never appears unless you know to teleport with the checkpoints.

When I discovered I could put the audio from my PS2 to use CDs for a backing soundtrack made grinding Sonic Heroes so much more bearable. Grinding Shadow, I had a CD player 😹 I really was tryna 100% these, I had some serious problems. Looking back at it, it seems like Shadow was like "Sonic Adventure, but every level is a Chaotix mission from Heroes. Also you're John Wick on ice".

It’s my opinion that Sonic was one of those games from the 16-bit era that was always gonna struggle transitioning to 3D. The main gameplay hook of sonic is going fast and making quick movement decisions. Moving super fast in 3D is only ever really done well with racing games. It’s not a coincidence that Sega tried so many racing like games with the Sonic IP. I don’t hate on modern Sonic but I just acknowledge that the games are always going to be…. not the top of the genre.

interesting that you think the SA2 radar is more functional than SA1 because everyone says the opposite. Considering the SA2 radar doesn't tell you you're near a shard if its not the shard you're looking for, hell the sa1 radar makes you complete stages faster for the few stages that arent sprawling enough to be a headache

I have grown to prefer the new radar, because it works with the redesigned hint system. The only negative I found with the new radar is that it can sometimes lead to some retreading of old ground if both the first and third shards are placed closely together. Outside of that, as well as a couple of poorly designed stages, I don't have any legit complaints.

You shall play Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 on Dreamcast. The colors was outstanding. 🥺 14:07 Hint: The Upskirt. 😏 18:26 The Dreamcast's version of the Chaos minigame was awesome. It was like having a Tamagotchi in your memory card, which you can feed & raise anywhere in a 2D animation, to then upload it into your game and see it evolving in a 3D animation. ...I can't forget the first time my Chaos swim. 🥰 You will not review Sonic Shuffle? 😮 It is a great Mario Party's like game. 😮

"feeling uncomfortable of playing Sonic Generations in PC" I do want to point out that Sonic Gens happens to have a super large dedicated mod community that have done a lot of reimaginings of old stages for both classic and modern and to play as different characters as well because it's really worth it to play it on PC. But if you still don't want to, you'd be better off playing it on Xbox One along with Unleashed since both of them are backwards compatible if you don't want to hassle in on finding a PS3 or use the RPCS3 or Xenia emulators. Also people hated Shadow The Hedgehog just because of it being stereotypically edgy. If fact, the gun mechanics originated from a weird suggestion by some fans to Yuji Naka about having Sonic using a gun which became the inspiration for E-102's gameplay and again with Shadow The Hedgehog.

Sonic Heroes was the only Sonic game I ever owned, and I never beat it. I don't know why, but the Sonic series just never clicked with me. I know the series has some really classic games it, but I could never get into it.

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle used to be very nostalgic to me, as someone that also started playing Sonic on the GameCube (I've also got a chance to play the classics thanks to the Mega Collection), and I used to watch a ton of trailers for Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic Riders. And to be honest, I have a soft spot for the Shadow game for how it pandered to my interests at the time it came out (rock music and guns, come to think of it, I'm still into those in video games) Looking forward to Part 2.

Personally, I found the best way to get all the Chaos Emeralds in Heroes is to use Team Rose to get the key then blast through the levels because they tend to be so short for them. Yeah, it means having to potentially listen to Big's voice lnes, but I found it's the quickest way to do it. I know you don't give a crap since you'll probably never play it again, I just wanted to relay my strategy for doing it.

That's the advice I always heard, and for some reason I thought Team Rose was intentionally slower than the others to nuke that strategy. Sounds like I was mistaken.

i have 200 hours on sonic adventure 2 on the pc 99.99% is on the chao garden an its mods i hated so much the special stages of sonic heroes, i was never able to beat them, and in the end i runned the game on an emulator, found a cheat that gave me all the emeralds, and fought metal sonic, it was a decent battle

The dreamcast ver of sonic adventure 1 is much, much better then dx is. A lot of the bugs in sa1 are because of the dx "upgrades" .

Even though the video was mostly negative, it's nice to see a naunced sonic video by someone who doesn't cover sonic stuff instead of being a half hearted crapped out vid. Little tip, generations on pc is considered the best version, but that might be dependent on your pc's specs. If you can't run it on pc, you can always find a 360 for cheap, as well as 360 copies of generations and 06.

Ok that's great. Sonic adventure 1 and 2 is amazing games i would agree. Sa2b ois always my favorite 3d sonic game. Playing as my favorite characters like sonic,Amy,Tails,Shadow and Metal sonic is fun. I love sa2b multiplayer mode.

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of the game, I still really do recommend trying Sonic Generations on Steam. You might want to download the fan made mod launcher with the specific mod that improves stability, but with that, I can't see a reason why your laptop can't run it well. I think that if you give it a try, you'd understand it's importance in current Sonic titles as the last widely agreed upon good game. And, of course, it's only 5 bucks on sale. Not much to lose.

I'm surprised to see so many fans here started with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle but I guess most of these were Nintendo households in the console war days. Don't get me wrong as I was too from a ninty household in the 90s with the SNES being our only system for almost the whole decade and it was pretty awkward being the only SNES owner in my class while the other kids had Mega Drives. My only exposure to Sonic in my formative years was the various cartoons DIC put out that is until my uncle bought a Mega Drive with the 6 in 1 cartridge that seemingly everyone else owned at the time which had Sonic 1 and that awful World Cup Italia 90 game.
