Dragon Car on Deathdrome Circuit (Final Circuit)
Crash 'n Burn is a futuristic racing/shooter video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and released for the 3DO in 1993. The game was the launch title for the system and was included as a pack-in game with Panasonic's original 3DO console.

I saw this game running on a huge(for the time) 36" television at a computer expo in late 1993. It looked absolutely mind-blowing back then. 😮 Then when the price came down to $499 in 1994, I managed to get my family to help me buy a 3DO. I played Crash 'n Burn all the time through 1994 and loved it. Overall, the 3DO was a decent machine with some good games, but the PlayStation & Saturn ended up being much better tech in 1995.

The amount of textured polygons on display here and the draw distance were unmatched in 1993! Arcade games weren't even doing this at the time! We're talking about back in the days of Virtua Racing flat shaded polygons, and Crash N' Burn was using textured polys!

Never had a 3DO ( way too expensive ), but I remember playing this at the ECTS show in London, in maybe 1994 ? The speed was mighty impressive, but the whole experience felt very much on-rails. Almost like those FMV games. Especially disappointing after playing Virtua Racing in the arcade. It was a nice taster of the next console generation, though.

This was definitely impressive for the time, as far as the tech goes. The complete lack of pop-up is pretty impressive. But in general this game feels a bit more like a tech demo…being that it was an early title (well, the EARLIEST title really), not surprised by that.

This is the great grandfather of Twisted Metal and the great great grandfather of GRIP. I have a 3DO, and this is honestly one of the better games for it. Most games on the 3DO are often interactive movies with godawful acting and sound effects. Crash n Burn, Gex, Road Rash, Star Wars, Silent Hill, Wing Commander, and Need for Speed rank as the best games. But for anyone interested in collecting, expect to pay a LOT for most of these, especially if they are the flimsy and the fragile Long Box. Sadly the 3DO was saturated with lousy games, but was and is very underrated as this was an EA designed system and concept. Imagine if EA had built the console itself. (RJ Mical of the Atari Lynx co designed it) we could still have a EA games 3DO series M5 or M6 by now. And it would have been incredible!

Good eye, that's exactly what they did. It's basically like overlaying a car sprite on a pre-filmed background. Kinda cheating, but worked well.
@kingstonlj
@kingstonlj 2 жыл бұрын
@@pandnh4 The environment graphics aren't FMV. I read something about the geometry maps being streamed from the CD, which was a clever trick that allowed for a long draw distance. This approach took a lot of burden away from the processors, but made the game camera very rigid. The vehicles being sprites and not made of polygons also boosted performance. There is a sort of MegaRace FMV vibe about this game, but the game world is actually being drawn.
@pandnh4
@pandnh4 2 жыл бұрын
@@kingstonlj right, that's why I qualified with: "basically like". It's not FMV, but the behavior is similar. NES did the same in Days of Thunder. Was revolutionary at the time, but you're basically just moving a sprite over a pre-rendered background.

I am also curious as to how The Need for Speed was done. That game is very linear and the world drawing behaves similarly, but it uses a strange LOD system for distant world chunks and objects that has me thinking they might be drawn in a separate buffer and scaled as sprites in accordance to their level coordinates or something

The road and trackside is real time rendered textured polygons. The car is of course just an animated sprite. The draw distance, frame rate and amount of polygons is quite impressive for it's time. The Atari Jaguar couldn't do this, and the transparent track as seen at 20:00 couldn't even be duplicated on Sega Saturn! Not until the Playstation was released were these graphics surpassed.

Back in 1993 it would have been worth it. Keep in mind that Doom was just released then, and didn't even have slopes. This had fully textured 3D, even perspective correct it seems, with the exception of cars being prerendered. Virtua Racing didn't have textures. Pretty sure even on PC there wasn't anything like that at the time. By 1994 it wasn't worth it anymore as it was better just to wait for the Saturn or PS1. Perhaps Panasonic should have waited for 1995 or 1996 and I am sure they'd have put out something that would have been truly next gen. Something with Dreamcast or PC 3DFX Voodoo grade graphics but a CD drive that's also much faster than contemporary console drives.
