CLEAN Parts AUTOMATICALLY! Formlabs FUSE BLAST at Formnext 2023!

This is quite huge. I remember looking at Shapeways at one point, and they have 3 locations: the HQ where all the software is done, and a US and European facility where they make the parts. The parts are done on the giant industrial SLS systems and a person's job is to take them and do all the post processing. At scale, this works. But when working at smaller scale, this is added labor costs. To reduce it further by letting things get cleaned off automatically (and even polished) is a huge win to being competitive at a smaller scale or lower volume.

I am impressed! Looks like it comes in under $100K too for everything. This is the innovation we need in the 3d printing industry and now to get it to trickle down to consumer level like SLA did!

Fuse 1+ and Sift are around 40-50k for the full package and extra service/extended warranty etc., Fuse Blast is gonna be aroung 10k

what i don't like is that previously they (all powder based system manufacturers) would sell you the printing/cleaning system with a pitch that it's easy, right out of the machine, just a quick air blast. Now.... cleaning is a problem, we got a solution... I get it, but it still sucks that the industry narrative is usually the same - we've solved all issues.... until we invent the thing that solves more issues.

I found it really cool as well, so much so, that I wanted to put money down on the pre-order for a Fuse 1. So I had them send me one of their sample parts and I was not impressed to say the least. Finish quality was good, but the material being used was weak and brittle. On the sample part, the spring lost it's tension only after 20-30 cycles, the edge of the hook rounded over and wouldn't latch any more, and the button failed. I decided to do a strength test by breaking the part and it took very little effort to snap. So I don't know exactly what this machine is made for, but I'm guessing not functional parts. Seems to me, that it's only good for prototyping, and modeling. Form labs got a hold of me a few weeks later and asked if I was still interested in placing an order, and after I told them what I experienced with the sample part and asked a few more questions, they never emailed me back.

The Blast is a beautifully designed device. My big problem as a potential German user is that it does not have ATEX certification. In terms of safety, the Blast actually represents a risk for companies and their users/employees. They claim that de-caking should remove enough material so that ATEX certification is not necessary. BUT who can assure me that as a user, I personally would not want to experience a dust explosion on such a device.

Its a sandblaster, not a vacuum cleaner. No this doesnt represent any explotion risk what so ever. The vacuumer though, they need to be atex certified

Now the Blast has a suction function. Then the parts that are installed must be certified. Does not change the problem. Why do so many metal post processors, with similar degradation then rely on it and choose parts so that the whole package goes into an Atex certification.@@sindrejl

problem still stands, but is kinda mitigated by ionizing the air and good grounding of every part inside. We (the company I work for, also German) have a similar system for years now. It's not even remotely as clean as they tell it here and you really have to have your ex-proof vacuum nearby to keep everything clean. But it works and removes a huge amount of time in post-processing. Make no mistake, this video is an Ad. But on the other hand, similar systems already exist without the branding and fancy touch displays (that will be scratched up by blasting media in no time anyways). Look for MHG Strahlanlagen if you need something local, well built and with every certificate you need. They got automatic tumblers as well.

It's really strange to me how much this is being marketed as more than it is. It's just an automated media blaster. DyeMansion has had this on the market for quite a while. Also not clear descriprion on if you need two separate machines for the "polishing". Otherwise you'd need to fully change your media in between steps every time.

It is a lot cheaper than all the pre-existing automated media blasters for a starter at the 10k mark. You do not need separate machines for polishing and you also do not need to change the media. When the cabinet is fitted with the polishing module and the polishing media, it does both the cleaning and polishing with the same media. (according to Formlabs website)

That is really cool, but clearly this was intended for people who use one at work given the hefty $25k price tag. Oh well, I'll keep waiting for the future.

Sls and sls-like processes will ve outside the range of the masses a few more years. But prices are for sure comming down. At least for the plastic and epoxy based once.

Then they won't survive, professionals won't go for a start up they will go for a brand that already has proven it self with superb customer service. The reason they are on formnext and on this channel is a sign for there short company life. Why are they waisting time then showing it to a group that isn't interested because of price.
