I'm coming from using Blender so used to using a lotta shortcuts (g, z; r, x, shift+D).

How comparable would this be to a free program like Blender?

Hi Chessie2003, I have limited experience with blender so I'm not really in a position to compare the two. Depending on your intentions for learning the programs 3ds Max does have the advantage of being industry standard in things like Architectural Visualization and video games (along with maya in the latter case)
