3ds pops and turns off? Find out why!

In this video I show the 3 possible causes of the popping and turning off problems that happens with the 3ds consoles. This also applies to 3ds XL. I have not tested this on new 3ds models.
I made this video because I often read people saying that this problem is caused by parts that does not cause that problem such as wifi and rf modules. I use a board that has nothing else connected to it except the bottom screen top screen and speaker cable.
I forgot to mention in this video that camera cable is often blamed as well, but as you can see, I don't even have a camera connected and it still boots.

If it is the old 3ds model it's the aqua blue one in the thumbnail. But most of my videos are in Portuguese but I guess it would still help to see. Can I ask you just one thing? I had a problem while I was trying to open my 3DS (it's an old model). I removed the first part from the back (the one with 4 screws) and now I'm trying to remove the second part but the screw in the top left corner and the one in the bottom left corner are stripped and I don't know how to remove them. Could you help me?

Oh I'm sorry to hear that! Can you solder? Usually people solder a new screw over the stripped one. But sometimes drilling is the only way, but you have to be careful

The battery seems to be working at like 70 per cent and it dies with the pop when I still have power so it must be one of those cables.Great videos. Cheers from Portugal!!!

This happened to me as a kid, at first it happened really rarely and wasnt worried but at some point it just wouldn't boot up at all. I got a new 3ds afterwards but I was curious about why this happened. I figured out kinda it had something to do with a cable since sometimes the way my console was opened would make my 3ds boot, but was still a kid and really didn't knew much about electronics. I think mine is related to the backlight on the lower screen, i remember having it flicker a bit, it didn't really bother me but now i thinl that it is the faulty one that is preventing my 3ds from turning on. Thanks very much for the video! Really helpful.

First off, your English was great in this video! If you hadn’t mentioned that you were rusty I wouldn’t have even thought anything of it. This is hands down the best 3ds troubleshooting video I’ve ever seen! I’ve got a question though. I’ve had this issue happen where I’ve tested the ribbon cables to be working using another board, and when swapping the original board back in the popping comes back. Do you know which fuses would cause this issue?

My friend sold me his 3ds xl, but I want to try and fix my old one. I disassembled my old 3ds and so far no cables seem to be damaged. Thanks this helped me but just wanted you to let you know we found another cause. You are correct the card reader can’t cause the pop BUT a bad SD card can cause the issue. We took apart and put case back together with the SD card in the reader and it bricked the SD card. Switching to a new card stopped the popping sound and allowed the system to boot.

Hey, just happened to stumble across your video and I wanted to ask, I have a o3DS that used to work, turned on and everything. I was browsing the eShop and all of a sudden my screens had some artifcats for a split second, I heard a pop and it turned off. The console does not wanna turn back on anymore, I checked the fuses, the 3D cable, everything. It charges, but doesn't turn on at all, no blue light or anything. Any ideas on what it could be?

We get the popping sound and turning off from pressing the L trigger on or anywhere too hard left next to the lower screen. But these ribbon cables you are showing in the video showing seem to be on the right side. Which one is most likely to be the culprit? It's a 3DS XL Pokemon XY Model

It charged fine before changing the speaker ribbon interestingly. I have some donor boards and a working board to reference. Do you know which capacitor is shorted on your board?

I usually buy them in ali express. Haven't had problems so far but you need to check if you are buying the correct speaker cable for your model of 3ds since they are all different.

Is it safe to assume that if you can hear the "pop" sound, the speaker assembly doesn't have a problem? I have a 3DS that have this problem, and for now I can rule out that the problem is not in the 3D assembly since the 3D works fine when I tested it with another motherboard, which leaves the lower screen backlight and speaker assembly

I have fixed many of these and only one or two were not the speaker cable. It's usually it cause it's the most affected with the opening and closing of the console. And yes, you will hear a pop even with a bad speaker cable

Ah, okay, I didn't know that. I have checked and the top portion of my broken 3DS (including speaker and 3D) and the lower screen (including the backlight) works fine when I tested it with the other motherboard. So I guess the problem lies on the connector on the motherboard for one/all of those components (or maybe the fuse, as you mentioned on the video)?

Oh, I actually forgot about CFW, even though when I was searching I saw some posts mention it. Maybe I'll try troubleshooting that first before giving up lol, since I'm more used to CFWs than troubleshooting motherboards. I'm not sure what my issue is. Blue light turns on for about 2-3 seconds, turns off, I hear a pop, so I assume the speakers are fine, and the bottom screen flashes blue very quickly. I'm working with a regular New 3DS. I heard in a different video, about replacing the top screen of a New 3DS, that if whats happening to me happens, it means the top screen isn't getting power, but according to this video that shouldn't matter? I'm lost.

@@gavinbrennan8969 most oh the times trial and error. 90% of the times it is the ribbon cable for the speakers though. Very few times I could actually see the damage, sometimes it's such a small tear you can't even notice it

Just wish this was an old 3ds xl cuz I'm trying to find out why my system makes a hissing sound, why my top screen is bright af, and why it shuts off with a popping sound when fully charged..

Oi, Camila! Tudo bem? Ótimo vídeo! Meu 3DS recentemente começou a desligar dependendo do quanto eu abria a tela superior dele. Tinha horas que ele iniciava com a tela de cima com o brilho no máximo, sendo que a minha configuração era pro brilho no mínimo. Até que em um certo momento o console deixou de ligar em qualquer posição de tela. Ele pisca as duas telas rapidamente, faz o pop e desliga. O que pode ser, e como posso consertar? Obrigado. :)

in the old 3ds and old 3ds XL yes! or it can also be a fault in the motherboard, but its not common. a faulty screen wont make it pop.

I have a 3ds and the led power indicator will not turn on I have tried cleaning the leads with isopropyl alcohol and checking the voltage on the battery the red light turns on when plugged in but no blue light when trying the power button I'm not sure if anyone has had a similar problem or may know of a solution but this video has helped a lot and very in formative to help mark off some guesses of why it wont turn on

maybe you have a blown fuse! there is a fuse near the battery, I believe it is marked as f1. thats the one you need to replace when it turns the charging light on but doenst power on. it is near the power button! check for continuity, if it doesnt beep its faulty

If you got lucky maybe you just need to reseat the ribbon cables, they might have snapped out with the fall!

No, you need a good speaker cable plugged in for your console to boot

I do appreciate you trying to help. But unfortunately, none of those fixed the issue. I guess I should probably start from the top. So, a few years ago (probably like 4 years ago at this point), I dropped my 3DS XL (not the new model) on the floor, and the top screen was clearly damaged. The bottom screen you could still see clearly, but the top, you could only see half of the screen. So essentially it was unusable. It's been in a drawer for the past 4 years since then. I just recently found it, and was going to try to fix it. Only thing, is now it does the whole blue light indicating it's turning on, but then makes a pop sound and never actually turns on. I tried all your solutions with cables and stuff, but none of those helped. I'm wondering now if when I accidentally dropped it several years ago, if I didn't mess up a fuse or something. I really really did want to be able to repair it. But unfortunately, I may just have to sell it as broken (which sucks considering I just recently bought a new top LCD panel for it too :( :(

I have come across the same issue with a faulty motherboard. Maybe you damaged some chip and eventually it stopped turning on. A solution could be a new board, you can get them at aliexpress

@@MilaNavi Hehe never panicked but I took it apart a few months ago, ordered a new screen, and then halted the process because I wasn't feeling like reverse engineering the ifixit tutorial:P. Started with it today, to figure out that a screen on Aliexpress which is called Nintendo 3DS NEW, is not just a new screen lol:P but a a part for a newer (I think 2015) version. . Tried the old stuff then again, broke a trigger cable in the process. As of by now, also a part of the 3d cable. But your tutorial really helped at least tring to figure some parts out. Still not sure, but pretty sure its that 3d cable. Trew in under a microscope and it has 3 cracks. Will give you an update once I have the parts and try again:P. Also broke the clamp for the camera connector but I am willing to hot glue that in. since I have learned from your video it is not needed for booting and I don't really think the end users I am trying this for cares. All in-all, this video is very usefull in trying to understand and troubleshoot, so thanks again. And yes please it would be helpfull if you could do the videos in English! It's hard for others to follow if not I think. Seems to be some good stuff over here:).

I Know you get a lot of requests but a 3DS I am working on turns on but the screens are black but turned on and I replaced the wifi module, RF reader, and microphone to try to get it to work

@@MilaNavi no it's running normal firmware from what I heard from the last owner he spilled rubbing alcohol on it while cleaning. I did some work on it and found the bottom screen was broken and replaced it but it just ended up only with a black screen

@@nicco155 the blue lights stays on or does it make the popping sound and the blue light turns off? if it pops its probablly a ribbon cable that was damaged. if blue lights stays on and the screens are both off with no sound at all its probably a motherboard issue. try holding R + L+ DPAD UP + A and power and see if it goes to recovey mode

esse problema q mostro no vídeo é de hardware mesmo, a luz demora um pouco pra apagar. esse caso que a luz acende e apaga na hora q vc está relatando geralmente é falha na leitura do cartão sd. são desbloqueados? pq se são provavelmente não está lendo o luma

De nada! Provavelmente seja isso. Vc pegou usados? Pega um cartão novo e coloca os 2 arquivos boot do luma e vê se muda alguma coisa

@@MilaNavi isso, peguei eles como sucata, mas com as placas funcionando, coloquei os arquivos, e tentei fazer o procedimento de select + start + X + power e dai ele permaneceu por mais de 1 segundo com o led ligado, dai a tela de baixo ascendeu e apagou rapidamente e desligou, coloquei o sd no pc e percebi que ele mexeu nos arquivos de boot e gerou novos arquivos, com o sd agora toda vez que aperta para ligar ele pisca a tela de baixo e desliga, acredito ser bom sinal, mas creio tambem que o flat do 3d está ruim

Bought a 3ds but the buttons would get stuck. Think the last person had skin on it. I went to clean out button area. I got the popping sound after putting it back together and turning it on. Luckily I only had to reseat 3 ribbon cables. That’s usually what it is. The large ribbon cable that connects the battery to the rest of the 3ds was not put in correctly. Very little experience with opening up consoles so im just glad I resolved it. I definitely won’t be opening anything else for a while tho lol
