I agree, I can instantly tell if a screen is IPS just by looking at it, but if you want to make sure 100% you can run 3DSident on a homrebrewed console and it will tell you what type both screens are as well as a bunch of other info.

Meh, the difference is mostly meaningless. It's only relevant for the people next to you watching your screen. Then again why would anyone bother to watch someone else play on their 3ds anyway? People just like to find teeny tiny differences just to feel bad...

@@shodancat1000 yeah that's cool. But the 3ds family is longer in production and no longer at retailers. You'd be buying off Amazon, eBay, and other third parties. And unless you got some serious bank to waste, you can't really complain about the consoles screen quality. I'm pretty sure my limited edition pikachu n3dsxl has TN screens. I spent like 360 on the console itself on ebay. Keep in mind I was looking for a standard black/red/blue model and not limited run editions. But on Amazon and eBay for a new or in almost new condition the prices were over 400 (at the time). This pikachu one was the cheapest I could find. After buying it the prices skyrocketed almost immediately to 700. (The prices now can be even higher. You could argue buying a cheaper used one, but I've had bad experiences with buying used consoles that didn't work or were heavily damaged and I couldn't find a shop that would repair them..)

at the end of the day most people don't play their 3Ds games by constantly tilting their screens and looking in at strange angles anyways if you play your games in a normal way the screens basically look the same and all have exactly the same resolutions and after a few years the only thing that really matters is if those handhelds still work or not

I disagree. I just boughtt N3dsXL and N2dsXL and I immediately spotted difference in screen quality without even knowing that You get different screens and it is lottery to get ips or tn. I started looking why and then I learnt that my 3ds has upper ips and 2ds both tn.

@@Dulk9 when you see a huge difference it is way more likely that you have not set up both of your Ds consoles the same way for example when you have the power saving mode on one of your consoles activated or the brightness is not the same level that can make a huge difference. When you look straight head on on a tn or ips screen there is no real difference like you also can see in the video they look the same, the difference is only visible when you tilt the console the tn screens tend to lose coloration when viewed from angles. Thats the only difference the resolution is for all 3Ds or 2Ds screens exactly the same no matter if tn or ips

TN screen is better for 3D effects since they have a faster refresh rate and response time if you use that feature. I searched and finally found a Zelda special edition with a TN screen on top and an IPS screen on bottom.

the ips screen seems to jutter and isnt as bright as the tn.. it washes out only slightly more and the discoloration is slightly present in both. the ips was discontinued because it was more prone to failure btw. the tn is superior overall but the ips due to its lower contrast displays color better and from a slightly higher viewing angle (very slightly) then the discontinued ips. but with the flickering dull look of ips with less white. and all you get is more obvious color i would say keep your tn especially if its newer because those ips screens are prone to burning out.

I buy and resell 3ds consoles, and out of the 3 red "new" 3ds XL all 3 were IPS on the top screens, the 2 galaxy were TN and 4 blacks were TN.

I have both and honestly not really a big deal, sure it has its benefits but it's honestly not something you're gonna care about. Plus there are places you can buy a ips screen for your 3ds so don't fret, you might even be able to pay someone to install them for you. And I actually use my non ips as my main.

So I just recently found out these two different screen types and I’ve got to say…. I think the difference in daily use is minimal. Sure, at angles it looks washed out. But it’s personal handheld… with 3D on especially. But maybe I’m just spoiled because my daily drives has both screens IPS. But my other 3DS only has the top and I still love it.

Nice video. But at the end of the day you play by looking to the front of the screen. I have both kind of 3DS too and I feel that in the IPS one the darks area doesn't show much details. TN have more grayscale ratio.

its kinda messed up all of the galaxy 3ds have the TN screens and those are the most I’ve come by. They’re using the old screens from 3DS XL that came out in 2013. Most exclusive editions have IPS either top screen or both IPS screens.

@@alpha-boss @Alpha-Boss There aren't any major cons besides the process being a little time consuming, especially since the eShop will be closing soon. You can reactivate miiverse with the community ran version called 'revesre'... It's nowhere near as active as miiverse was but its there... You can also get any game or dlc you want through the hShop, the alternative to the eShop... Personally, I wish I'd jailbroken my 3DS sooner... Look up 3ds guide for detailed instructions on what to do...

My old 3ds was double TN, my new Nintendo 3ds xl is dual IPS (bought used without knowing what i would get screen wise) in a few days, i will get another new 3ds xl and an old 3ds. At the end of the day who cares, i played 3 years with my old 3ds dual TN and i had a ton of fun. Update: the other new 3ds xl has top ips and bottom tn.

Not sure if you mentioned it but the 3d does not distort while the stereoscopic 3d is on, a game changer in my opinion. I personally have a Galaxy dual ips which I absolutely love.

those are the LEDs that light the screen. on TN panels they're typically more noticeable since they're cheaply made. Higher quality IPS LCDs hide the LEDs much easier.

This is the best advice to identify IPS screens. I collect them and just checked all 16. My two Major's Mask 3DS's have top IPS only, one of my standard black 3DS's actually has a bottom IPS and one of my four Hyrule edition 3DS's has both top and bottom. The other three had neither. None of my Galaxy, SNES, standard Red or any 2DS editions had any IPS at all. So it really is a lottery. Thanks, man!

Why did Nintendo do this ? At least they could’ve made the TN one cheaper than the IPS one, they could’ve written it on the boxes. Even the DSi XL (a console wich IS OLDER than the 3DS‘s) had an upper IPS screen, I think the lower one was IPS too.

My launch 3DS XL had dual IPS, but had several hardware issues and I unfortunately had to send it in for repairs recently after the Circle Pad just randomly tore apart after years of being careful with my system. Unfortunately they’re replacing the entire system and now i’m just hoping they give me IPS screens back. I know it’s not really a huge deal and is most certainly a first world problem but i’ll still be disappointed if I end up with TN screens.

@@nocaed21 I got my 3DS back this week and the top screen was IPS but I'm fairly certain the bottom screen is TN. not a big deal for me since its not the screen you spend most of your time looking at anyway and IPS is more helpful as well for the 3D effect. Not sure if my original system was dual IPS at this point but i'm pretty sure it wasn't.

If you're lucky enough to find a "new" 3DS with IPS displays then it's screen is better than the older one. Also, if you like using 3D, it's better on the new one. "new" 2DS screen is bigger, brighter and more vibrant the original 2DS

Did I hear wrong or did you say, all DSI xl have IPS. When I asked the seller he said it was almost only the New 3DS HYRULE EDITION that had IPS. Ohh I'm tired of looking for IPS. There are two new 3ds with TN screen. And normal 3ds xl. TN TN TN. 3D effect 🤢 And IPS waste of money. 😡 Is it only HYRULE EDITION oh no it's rare, lots of money or hard to find. DSi XL are all IPS indeed. With the 3DS, it is pretty much random. I have 2 Hyrule eds and only one them has IPS.
